Crossed to the dark side today 21:54 - Feb 8 with 6068 viewsthe_toff

I got a message from a friend of mine at 10am this morning asking if I fancied going to watch Norwich. He’s a season ticket holder and the mate he goes with couldn’t make it. I’m guessing I was down the pecking order given I’m Ipswich and didn’t get invited until this morning, but against my better judgement I went along. I don’t get to many games now tickets at PR are so difficult to come by so why not I thought. We met in Norwich at midday for a few beers pre match, must admit I didn’t even check who they were playing and it didn’t become apparent until I saw some Derby fans in the city centre. Even at that point it didn’t twig that Jackson & Harness are both there to be honest, but walking to Carrow Road the penny dropped and I was looking forward to seeing them. I was disappointed to see them both on the bench.

Norwich really are average. They looked to be heading that way last season while we marched to promotion but they were really toothless today. The atmosphere was absolutely crap as well. They’re not going up. Imagine my delight when Harness won an injury time penalty to deny them the win. I couldn’t celebrate as I was in the home end but I definitely smiled as the ball hit the net.

It was nice to catch up with my friend though, we both had tough years last year for different reasons and enjoyed a few more beers with him post match.

How many times did they sing about the 15 years of us mostly drawing or not playing each other?

I’ve crossed to the dark side many times tbh. As a kid my dad and I would roll along to watch a game (have a laugh) at the Norwich hovel when staying at my grandmothers.

In later life I’d tootle along with a NCFC mate of mine to London games and visa versa. We’d threaten to ‘shop’ each other at the games and generally take the p£ss, beer being the main object of this before during and after plus mockery.

It was a good laugh, especially when Crewe started getting decent and they plus an Alex fan got included in the rotation! I even introduced them to the mecca that was the Drum and Monkey.

So yes, the dark side is just that (can Stow ever be converted to the light?) but you can always find fun. Especially if they lose.

They were actually 6th in the live table before the pen went in.

They could well sneak into the playoffs again looking at the form of the clubs around 6th.

Would love them to finish 7th, level on points with 6th but having a 1 worse goal difference.

They are only 2 points from the bottom half, 3 from 14th place and 15 from relegation.

23 from promotion.

Out of the Cup.They are going nowhere this year.

It must be fun to be a Budgie

On their day they look ok, with luck they could make the play offs but they are not getting past any of the top four so….

If they lose Sargent again they are done, without him they are toast and we all know how fragile he is

The only Muff in Town.

When I first started watching matches used to be on a Saturday at 3. There were a sizeable number of people who lived on the border that had season tickets at both Portman and Carrow Roads.

Does that happen now I wonder ?
Does anybody know somebody that still does that ?

Never understand the replies to this as in we never learn!

We always predict them to be sht but time after time they still aren't. They're 2nd top scorers in the league with the league's top scorer to come back (Sainz).

Let's face it they're making the play offs again and definitely won't be facing a 90+ points team that finishes 3rd.

If scum's and our luck is anything to go by in the last 20 years, I'd put a bit of money on them going up.

10/1 to be promoted

Can’t see them beating either Leeds, Burnley or Sheff U if they got that far

Yep, I find this stuff a bit weird. Been there twice with Ipswich and didn't want to go both times, the thought of giving them even £40 makes me sick.

How can "fans" stand amongst the sister fiddlers and hear anti Ipswich stuff without reacting? Weird.

Although my late Father supported Town, when he was stationed in Norwich with the Army he’d watch them at home. He said it didn’t turn nasty until the 80s. I also knew some old Norwich supporters who used to watch Town on the odd Saturday they were playing away and said there was no problem with it back in the 50’s and 60’s.

I knew several in the 80'sand 90's who went to both. Mostly from Diss or Lowestoft.
Border country.
Seems now it is not a thing.

Yeah, quite a few in Lowestoft had season tickets at both in the 60's. To be honest the rivalry existed between the two clubs back then but it wasn't as nasty as it has become now.

It seems like much in life now. There is no middle ground. You have to be on one side and hate the other.

If that was the case in the 60s what on earth happened during the 70s and 80s when hooliganism was at its peak?

The hatred was there in the 70's between the two clubs , most definitely.

I'd say the reason fans living on the boarder dont support both clubs now is due to cost.

Interestingly North Essex has always had more Ipswich supporters than Colchester ever has, in fact more people travel from the county on match days to see Ipswich than attend Colchester games, although back in the Layer Road days a lot more people watched both. That’s another one that has turned nasty (from their side) in the past decade.

2005 I got given a ticket to watch Norwich Millwall. Andy Marshall in goal for Millwall. Was sat right next to Millwall fans. Police everywhere. Great atmosphere from Millwall fans. Marshall gifted Norwich a goal and then much to my delight saved a penalty.

I think the Naughties had a lot to do with all that. Until then it was many decades since we'd inhabited the same universe. But in the Naughties they went from being our little country cousins to a team that actually finished above us in the Championship, and so rivals over whom they had a very short period of bragging rights. We'd also nicked Burley as a manager.

They might well also feel that, more recently, we had somehow pulled a fast one by saddling them with several players that were not as good as they'd once been.

When my dad was alive... he died 1978... we'd go all Town home games and may be half a dozen games at Carrow Road. I was in the Barclays when Fashanu scored the goal they played repeatedly on the intro to MOTD. I saw Cyril Regis score a fabulous goal for WBA. I was in the South Bank Terrace when 35,000 crammed in to see Spurs. I was also there when Town won the Texaco Cup and half the stadium seemed to be Blue and White.
In those days neither club was completely fixated on the other.
My team is Ipswich through and through but I don't loathe Norwich.

Back in the day when we were staying in Yarmouth and took in the odd game at the hovel, you never heard anti Ipswich stuff. It wasn’t like that. We’d go for something to do and it was always funny if they lost or it was a poor game. Oddly enough, I don’t think I ever saw Norwich win at CR. Never mind eh.

Wherever my dad was working or living we’d always go to games if we couldn’t see ITFC. In the south west we’d choose Exeter, Torquay or Argyle on one occasion, but for convenience it’d be Torquay where possible. Great fun. In Kent, we’d watch Gillingham or Palace if we were both about and ITFC were away.

I guess we just liked watching football and I sort of carried that on with chums over the years. But it’s never the same as watching your own team. You sort of observe, but don’t engage or care.

Back to them lot, I want them to lose every game until hell freezes over, but I don’t hate them in the way I do say West Ham and their ghastly, ugly all day supporters.
