Question for the republicans on here 16:13 - Mar 13 with 1563 views | bluelagos | Given the way Starmer has dangled the prospect of afternoon tea with Charlie to Donald - and we could get some real benefits out of it - does the "soft power" of a monarch and the fact that it is quite handy when dealing with morons like Trump - is that enough of a benefit to make you think maybe we should hang on to the Royals after all? Question for the republicans on here on 16:23 - Mar 13 with 1504 views | Mullet | Nope. The fact they appeal to Trump should be another reason to finally get rid. The fact that the right wing nuts in this country now hate Charlie for Ramadan and were painting ash on their faces last week did make me chuckle though. In all seriousness, Trump is just an egotist who wants his belly rubbed and his name redacted from flight logs. You just have to give him something to make him feel special. The fact he thinks being paraded around with the SaxeCobergs makes him feel special is irrelevant. If they didn’t exist it’d be something else. Or we’d just have the money to tell him to go F himself.

I'd still get rid - but I do think Starmer is doing a half decent job of using their "soft power" in a positive manner. Just got to hope Prince Andrew doesn't call round as/when Charlie is being wheeled out to impress foreign dignitaries.

Question for the republicans on here on 16:30 - Mar 13 with 1434 views | Pinewoodblue | The thought of Truss, Corbyn or Farage exercising the powers Trump has, or things he has, should be enough for anyone to be thankful for what we have.

Question for the republicans on here on 16:31 - Mar 13 with 1434 views | TractorWood | There is no logic to hold onto the monarchy other than it's the status quo. The argument that they 'bring in tourists' is ridiculous. So does Harry Potter World near Watford, but it doesn't mean we should make Ron Weasley head of state.

Question for the republicans on here on 17:16 - Mar 13 with 1223 views | MattinLondon | Not really - the orangeutan will love the ceremony that comes with a state visit but I’m not sure whether any long term good will come with it. In the short term, his ego and self-importance will be satisfied but then he’ll move on onto his next toy - just like the spoilt child he is. Trump will go back home, get a lot of adulation from the MAGA lot again and promptly forget about any favours for the UK.

They really do need to find a new argument for keeping them as the country with the highest number of tourists is... France. Not a great prognosis for the monarchists

Question for the republicans on here on 17:40 - Mar 13 with 1121 views | NedPlimpton | Did I miss the part where we've actually benefitted from offering Trump a state visit? Still impacted by the tariffs so not really sure what the dangling has achieved
Question for the republicans on here on 19:33 - Mar 13 with 896 views | J2BLUE | I've softened on them over the last five years or so. It did amuse me though that the second it was announced a lot of people started saying he shouldn't have to host Trump and it was unfair on him. Nah, this is precisely the soft power they all mention whenever the subject comes up so the government should be able to use them however they want for things like this. It's part of the job.

You do know that Truss, Farage and Corbyn have never won a General Election as Leader of a Party, don't you? The President of the USA is limited in powers by a written Constitution, is restricted to two four year Terms of Office, and is subject to oversight by Congress, with the House having the ability to vote for Impeachment and the Senate holding the hearing, and voting on the outcome. The British Monarch IS the embodiment of the Legal system, and there is no legal mechanism to force them to abdicate. Good Queen Bess II held the post for 70 years. All things considered, she did a very good job generally during decades of great change. Personally I switched from being ambivalent about the monarchy when she failed to stop the illegal proroguing of Parliament, and all the grand talk about her being the final Check and Balance of the Great British Unwritten Constitution was proven to be utter pish. The erosion of many of our Human Rights, and the creeping power of the Executive, alongside the rise in Corporate power and ability of the Plutocracy to buy and influence all forms of media, mean that I now believe we live in a Post-Democracy. I would prefer to live in a Democracy with a Constitution. I would start with Proportional Representation, then move onto a written Constitution (especially defining the separation of powers of Executive, Legislature and Judiciary). A term-limited Elected Head of State as protector of the Constitution, with the powers to be an effective check and balance on the Executive, would be third on my list.

Agree. France despite its obvious drawbacks on the language and tiff with the English does have fantastic coast, great mountains, good weather (South in particular), tremendous food and drink. I personally prefer Spain but do see the appeal of France.

A recent BBC article has Spain a close second
