Guide to Bromley 12:12 - Jul 19 with 2189 viewsBromley_Blue

With Town being drawn against League Two Bromley in the League Cup in what will be the first ever match between the sides I thought I would give a quick bit of info about the local area for those fans coming down.

Getting here

Driving, the Dartford Crossing is always a bit snarly but coming across from Essex into Kent generally goes more smoothly than the return leg through the tunnel. Come off on the A21 junction which is junction 4. The roads near to the ground can all pretty much be parked in with some restrictions on those a bit closer to Bromley Town Centre and Bromley South train station.

Train. Into Liverpool Street and then loads of options to get here. Aim for Bromley South Station not Bromley North or Hayes (these are both on a slow line out of London Bridge, Bromley South on a fast train is only 15-20 mins out of Victoria. On the tubes if its a baking hot day the tube is awful but the Circle Line round to Victoria from Liverpool Street is often noticeably cooler but takes about 10 minutes longer plus once on there are no changes. Alternatively you can get to Victoria on the Metropolitan, Hammersmith & City plus the Circle going the other way to Kings Cross change on the Victoria line and head south to Victoria. Alternatively Central line to Oxford Circus and change on to the Victoria line. Once at Victoria, there a few pubs near Victoria station two Spoons and an expensive Sports bar across from the station plus Supermarkets for a carry out to keep topped up on the short journey to Bromley South. At Victoria avoid the stopping trains and get on a fast train to Kent and the first stop on those will be Bromley South, there is a big clear departures info board and the fast trains are usually those to Ashford, Dover Rochester and Gillingham.

The Bromley Ground is a short walk from Bromley South train station and there are plenty of pubs in Bromley.

There is a biggish spoons across from the Station its far from the best and its in the bottom of an office block but its a straightforward Spoons. There is a Nando's behind the pub. Alternatively there a pubs 5 minutes into the town centre that are much better these are found on two roads the High Street and East Street. On the High Street you have the second Spoons, The Star and Garter which is really good lots of interesting beers The Barrel and Horn quite trendy, The Artful Duke which is a bit of a sports bar The Patridge which is a Fullers Pub not much of an atmosphere. On East Street you have quite a few different restaurants mostly chains an O'Neils and the Railway Pub.

Closer to the ground you have the Bricklayers Arms and the Cork and Cask. Bricklayers Arms recently done up sells food, Cork and Cask tiny micro bar. A little bit further on you have the Hit or Miss on Chatterton Road a small neighbourhood bar which sells good beer and is very welcoming. All of these pubs accept away fans.

At the ground there is an entire stand which is being redeveloped which restricts the capacity of an already small ground. Not sure what the Bromley allocation of tickets will be for Town but would have thought 500 - 700. There is a bar at the ground but this will be for home fans only the redeveloped stand will hopefully in the future improve facilities for away fans but on the whole the provision for away fans at Bromley has been pretty poor but the club were non League until last season with the current league two standing being the highest in the clubs history.

The sides have not played each other previously. Luke Wolfenden was on loan here a few years ago, Omar Sowunmi a giant of a centre back for Bromley used to be an Ipswich youth player. New signing for Bromley and the games pantomime villan Will Hondermarck was at Norwich but did not make an appearance for the Budgies.

Not forgetting the Swan and Mitre in Bromley north, up from the Barrel and Horn. Used to be a right old dive years ago, but has smartened itself up over the years. If you like Turkish nosebag there’s a really good restaurant on that road called Havat. Strongly recommend that.

The Wetherspoons across from Bromley South is called the Richmal Compton and is ok. Large premises and the service is ok if you go to the bar rather than ordering through the app.

Forgot about the Swan & Mitre as you say used to be quite rough & guaranteed Friday night punch ups haven’t been in there for years. Will have to give it a visit.
As with all Town centres Bromley is suffering but is still pretty good. Ipswich town centre by contrast just seems worse & worse each time I go.

What is the absolute quickest way back to Liverpool St from Bromley south?

Have always made the 23:30 out of Liverpool St for any London evening game but this one seems really awkward time wise and if there’s penalties then absolutely no chance I think.

Bloody car isn’t ULEZ exempt so don’t wanna drive within that which is annoying.

ULEZ is £12.50, I'd personally swallow that for the convenience of knowing I'd not have to worry about spending the wee hours in the all night cafe

It annoys you that you have to pay to pollute the air in an area you don't live in?

Why am I not surprised.

People drive cars shock horror.

It’s just pure greed from those in charge, especially when it was extended, but disguised as climate change bôllocks and people fall for it, just another tax on the already taxed.

Tfl.gov.uk is the place to check, with updated times etc.

Sadly, the last reasonable departure fm Bromley South to get the 2330 out of Liv St looks to be 2216, so leaving the ground by 2200. Even that one relies on several connections.

There are later trains to Colchester.

Why are you so scathing and volatile to individuals in a lot of threads you contribute to ? Do you not think it comes across as quite unpleasant and aggressive, no?

I can only assume you've not got the context here with regards to his and others posting on the forum, towards myself and others.

In this thread he's selfishly said he doesn't want to pay to pollute other peoples air (that's greed apparently) and then he's lied about the reason for the ULEZ zone (it wasn't climate change, it was reducing air pollution which studies have shown it has done).

He deliberately starts arguments on here and frequently has post deleted. Last week he had one deleted for homophobic content but because some see him as a "lovable rogue" he constantly gets away with it.

You can think what you like of me but the issues aren't of my making. I suggest if you don't like my reply you report it but I'm bored of letting views like this persist and permeate.

Also great to see his gang back and upvoting his unpleasantness.

You post was a lie containing falsehoods and was ignorant of the facts.

There is no opinion on facts, it's just you being you.

This is just another example of you trying to start a wider argument by including "members the brigade" in your response to a post not even directed at you.

‘The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) is improving London’s air quality, benefiting public health and helping to combat climate change’

Sorry for omitting the air quality bit but thought that was obvious to most.

Regardless of whether it was a grumble about paying taxes, the intentions behind the tax etc...do you not think some of the language you use is inflammatory, personal and only contributes towards exacerbating a situation? To quote yourself :

Why am I not surprised.

It's just you being you.

It's doesn't come across very well and reads as bullying-like behaviour. Just not very pleasant to read on a Sunday morning in a group containing fellow Town fans. Also seems a shame, as a lot of your football related posts are normally spot on and insightful

To claim that I'm bullying sitters and his gang is incredible and shows you definitely don't know anything about the historical context.

So we shouldn't challenge openly selfish behaviour now? We shouldn't correct facts?

If you think it's bullying you should definitely report my post to admin.

“In this thread he's selfishly said he doesn't want to pay to pollute other peoples air”

Am I not being the complete opposite of selfish by suggesting I don’t want to drive into the zone thus avoiding paying? Which is one of the main reasons of ULEZ? To act as a deterrent?

I always used to suggest Newbury Park to people who wanted to tube into London but now suggest Epping since the zone was extended, doing my bit to help the air quality and save people an extra tax.

(EDIT: Unfortunately looks like I won’t get a reply from ‘SB’ to this post, strange that isn’t it…)

You can reply to whatever you like but you were certainly trying to bring others into it.

"Just put my car up for sale, not allowed to drive it anymore because ‘SB’ doesn’t like it."

Didn't say that but there you go.

"If your air quality is so precious move out of the bustling city eh."

I suggest you take it up with the London governing body who made the law.

I'll be leaving it there given this is clearly becoming a pile-on and I can't be bothered with it.
