Downes 16:39 - Aug 17 with 3228 views | Metal_Hacker | I’ve never been a believer that he would be the answer and watching him today confirmed my thoughts Not suggesting he’s not a tidy player at this level but aren’t we looking for someone / something more than a disrupter / bruiser ? Once Azor gets up to speed I think he’ll be solid alongside Jens but with a third thrown into the equation , it wouldn’t be Downes for me

As I say I struggle to see it but happy to disagree and accept another opinion He’s just not for me and thinking we need more than a player such as him Today we missed a midfielder breaking the lines

Downes on 17:04 - Aug 17 with 2833 views | Garv | We need someone with a goal threat, which presumably Hackney would offer. Azor won't get goals, Cajuste got one last year. I wonder if, for all our supposed attacking flair, we end up being involved in quite a lot of low scoring games. With Johnson, Young, O'Shea and Greaves, we should be pretty solid and the attacking unit is going to need a lot of knitting together.

Downes on 17:25 - Aug 17 with 2623 views | billlm | Hes a good player, Stuck somewhere between the championship and premiership, For any team wanting aspirations of staying in the premiership no you cant justify to much of an outlay for him, He will be at Southampton a long while,
Downes on 17:57 - Aug 17 with 2425 views | mellowblue | Best midfielder on the pitch today. Very tidy but needs to be so much more daring. Plays very safely as if he is protecting his Opta passing stats. I felt the same when he was with us and he has not developed. I can see why West Ham did not see him as a Rice replacement. Too vanilla. But technically very good.

Why do we need our double pivot players to offer a goal threat? Chipping in with 2 or 3 would be more than enough.

Yeah, I don't get the goals/ getting forward argument from some. We're struggling a bit in the middle precisely because Taylor is a bit of both and neither. We need another disrupter in there. What we need the midfielder to do is distribute with a better range and quicker pace than perhaps we had with Morsy etc, that would be the improvement, not goal contributions. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

just need someone who can link to the attackers better with good vision and passing ability. A purely defensive double pivot is not enough.

That's true, but to me that just needs someone with quick feet and vision. Not a marauder who needs to get forwards and absolutely contribute goals and assists specifically.

Is Pirlo still playing? If he was 3 or 4 years younger and not just moved in the last 6 months someone like Matt Grimes would have fit the bill. Looks after the ball in tight spaces, technical and can pick a pass. I’m not sure who else is around who might be suitable. But I think I agree. Someone who can link play and also a safe pair of hands under pressure would be good. They don’t need to be charging up the pitch and getting 8-10 goals a season though (although if someone can do both…).

I agree completely. Didn’t see anything special from him today and didn’t see anything special from him in the season before he left. If he wasn’t an ex player we wouldn’t even be talking about him. Didn’t make it with West Ham. Was he the best midfield on the pitch today. Possibly but Towns midfield will improve and think we just need to move on from him.
Downes on 20:27 - Aug 17 with 1623 views | BouncebackIpswich | Agree 100%, he would be absolutely perfect for Town now. A shame Saints won't let him go to us.

Humphreys offers what you are looking for. Alternatively include Woolfenden and play three at the back.

Downes on 08:50 - Aug 18 with 852 views | darkhorse28 | He exactly the profile we need. I think you’re letting history cloud your judgement, if he’d never been here, you’d love the way he played. He helps teams get control, good with the ball, not Jens levels, but he does the nasty stuff much better than Jens, and we will need that, it’s a long season. Serious question. When was the last time you saw us control a game? At any level. I’ll explode Huddersfield who didn’t try, and I genuinely can’t remember. We don’t need more quality now, not at this level, we need a player that can help us get hold of games, build a foundation to play from. Remember people saying Mcburnie wasn’t what we needed either…., 5 goal contributions in 2 games!! Another player that’s nasty, helps get a foothold in games, does the hard work as well as can play. We probably need two or three of that profile in this group…, our new Morsy played well yesterday, clear signs he can be a very good player, but that’s it. We don’t have that in the group …, and that’s why our legacy group (with less quality? would beat us every single day of the week…, and twice on Sundays. Philogene, Clarke, poor without the ball, Johnson too good players for sure, but not without the ball they aren’t. We are so far short in this area…, Flynn would be a revelation for us. Doesn’t matter, he’s not coming…, Will Still sees what sinsee…, a platform to build success around (at this level). He’s going nowhere. Shame. We have one CDM at the club and we play two for 50 games plus, let that sink in.., it’s really poor planning. We need another one at least.
Downes on 09:50 - Aug 18 with 664 views | Jack27 | I noticed yesterday that after the game where Kieran was shaking hands with players he gave Flynn a hug. After the game Flynn was also interviewed and spoke nicely about the club. He wasn't asked about his future or anything - but a couple of times spoke in the short term for Southampton.
Downes on 10:37 - Aug 18 with 463 views | Rimsy | Thought Downes was fairly anonymous yesterday, especially in the second half. He's been around long enough now and had PL experience, but looks much the same as when here.

Downes on 10:49 - Aug 18 with 386 views | Nutkins_Return | He's a top player. Can play prem level but wouldn't be stand out in the town necessarily. What Downes gives you often goes unseen or not appreciated by fans as he isn't the lung busting attacking midfield player. He's more of a mobile /tenacious Skuse type which managers really appreciate because he can join things together in terms of patterns of play and also break things up and sniff out danger. Matusiwa is a bit similar but a bit more physical. What Downes would give you is bravery and ability to take the ball off the keeper or tight spaces and very rarely gives it away. He keeps the ball moving and can help to move us up the pitch. We had Morsy do it previously and Matusiwa I think can do it as well hopefully. Taylor really struggles with it. We find ourselves get stuck playing out from the back. Downes would help with this without us realizing he's the pivot helping. He doesn't it brilliantly if you watch for it.

Even Don Goodman picked up on that yesterday and said their job was to let the 5 in front of them play and attack. I think he was including our full backs in that number
Downes on 11:05 - Aug 18 with 255 views | PioneerBlue | Downes was a no for me before interest was shown earlier in year. I came around to the idea because he is undoubtedly talented and has the kind of attributes we ask for from players in our 6 role. I’m not as sure about the 8. But that brings you to where we are now. Azor is going to be a success, you can see that he’s got the game for it and he’s improving game by game. That would mean Downes sharing minutes with Azor unless we did 2 and trade Taylor which is possible but less likely at this stage of the window. Conclusion, I would take Downes but not sure we have the minutes he would need and that shows the task of identifying and securing a finisher 6. [Post edited 18 Aug 11:06]
