I transited through Schiphol the other week, and thought I'd have a quick nose in the duty free section to see if there were any worthwhile bargains.
Pretty much everything seemed to be more expensive than supermarket prices. One that stood out was Johnnie Walker Blue Label, which was on sale at a 'special price' of about €250, yet can be got for under £150 online.
Is duty free still a thing? Or is it now just a chance to try and deprive the gullible of their money, whilst they labour under the assumption that the prices represent good value for money? |  |

Duty free is still obviously available but over the years the gap between supermarket prices and duty free has narrowed considerably. I remember going on the Sea Princess in 2005 and because you pay in dollars I got 14 bottles of spirits which cost me between £5 and £6 each.
The best places I have found to buy booze are either in the Caribbean or Gibraltar.

Ciggies are still a fair bit cheaper. 200 Marlboro for 63 Euros at Munich airport a couple of weeks back. |  | | |

One thing I’ve noticed whilst away, beers aren’t cheap anymore.
£5/5.50 most places here. I see why they do it, they know we’ll pay it.

Used live in Kent and it was cheaper to drive and get a cross channel ferry to EastEnders and back to buy Shepherd Neame ale than it was to buy it from the Asda next door to the brewery. |  | | |

Where's 'here'? I was in Berlin the other week, and had a very nice evening watching Tatort in a local Eck-Kneipe, supping on Flensburger Pilsener at about €3.50 for a half-litre. | |

Massive sports bar here (that I’ll try watch the game in) has every beer you could imagine, so hoping for a few Hazy Jane’s! | |

Always was a thing for Rest of the World. Has become a thing again for the EU but obviously limits have also come back in. I assume this has killed the booze cruise sending a mate over to Calais with a van. Shops on the continent will almost always be considerably cheaper. |  |

'Duty free' chocolate is the worst offender. A bag of M&Ms for about 8 quid? No thanks.
Stena Line had 4 x 1L Baileys for £40 this summer which seemed very reasonable. But I didn’t want 4 litres of Baileys because I would have drunk it ridiculously quickly so I resisted. | | | |

Perfume/after shave is much cheaper online now and spirits/champagne don’t offer much of a saving anymore.
It’s cigarettes that seem to represent a huge saving. Got my mate 800 cigs for less than £200 on a trip to Netherlands last week and he reckons it saved him nearly £400, which is just utterly ridiculous.
It must represent a loophole that the UK government want stopped. I assume the £400 he’s saved would be going towards the NHS if he’d bought them over here.

My son is in Rhodes at the moment.
Have you been down to Prasonisi Beach yet? It's where the Aegean and Mediterranean Seas meet. On one side of the beach the water is as calm as milk. On the other side its a surfers paradise. |  |

booze cruise died as a thing really about 15 years ago IMO, by then the likes of Eastenders were ripping people off anyway, it was cheaper to go further into Pas de Calais and find a hypermarche. | | | |
