I have been redesigning a website and we were discussing responses to posts/blogs that they make.
What's are people's thoughts on this expanding the Uppies and Downies to a more expressive list on TWTD? Make it a bit more modern?
Instead of just having up / down, could have more choices? Similar to FB or other Social Media platforms?

If you are redesigning a website, i would steer well away from binary responses, we have seen over the last decade what that does for algorithms, society and politics.
as someone who also runs websites, if you really need a message board or similar, I would consider not having a "response" button at all. If someone needs to respond, they can do in words, the clickbait crap isn't worth it. |  |

Depends what you are trying to do, but limiting the options not only simplifies things, but also forces people into text (i.e. posting) to express more complex or nuanced responses to posts. Thus increasing traffic. |  |

as someone who also runs websites, if you really need a message board or similar, I would consider not having a "response" button at all. If someone needs to respond, they can do in words, the clickbait crap isn't worth it. |
Thanks, some good points to consider. Referendums have a lot to answer for the ills of the society, it has forced people into camps over one issue rather than a broader view.

The issue with referenda is that they have often been on issues which those voting have very shallow knowledge of. They have been used to absolve responsibility for making unpopular decisions where governments have known what is for the best also known it isn't popular. |  |

Obviously as a non-regular i cannot have an opinion but....
Simplicity would be good it shouldn't really be about likes its about opinions and engagement not just saying things to get upvotes and pat your best mates on the back. Dont want a closed club.
a thumbs up and down as usual
perhaps a "good point made" one
perhaps a "hmm not so sure" one for disagreement so the regulars dont got all toxic on the posts they dont like, this would protect against it.
maybe top likes on any post after 24hrs get converted into like a icon of more worth like a town badge and then maybe the more of them you get the more seniority you get. For those that need it. [Post edited 25 Aug 2025 21:23]

I go on several different clubs forums. Some have a range of uppies for differing types of likes. Some dont have downies as we know them at all.
I dont see any of the others are better than the simplicity of ours.
However many note the number of comments made by contributers and award titles such as youth team, first team, manager, and my favourite, name a stand after them. |  | | |

Replace the up and down arrows with pictures of Shefki and Pablo. Don't tell anyone which represents an up or a down vote.

Funnily enough as a user of multiple forums and social media etc, I think the range of reactions is comfortably the worst.
I'd remove them, and just encourage people to actually build conversation and reply to messages. |  |

I'd follow YouTube's example and do away with the "dislike" or downvote option altogether. It is abused by some immature posters as a means to wind people up - resulting in fueling arguments and becoming a mechanism for enacting grudges.
If that was taken away the said immature posters would then have to post something to have a pop at their chosen target. |  |

As a fellow website manager, I couldn’t agree more with this. We’ve seen recently on here how posters can get stressed at the number of down votes they get, and only racist posters deserve that.
I guess if you really want to allow immediate feedback, a positive only option is one approach. So just thumbs up. |  | | |

They've not done away with it, it's still there, they just don't show the total amount anymore.
You could go down Reddits route and do up and down voting but hide the totals (for however long). That works quite well and tends to stop dog piles.
But it really depends on what the point of the system you're designing is. Personally I'd go with simplicity unless there is some need to curate. [Post edited 26 Aug 2025 17:41]
