Dutch? Though if we are including Dutch people with links to Surinam, we need to add Wilnis. [Post edited 8 Jul 16:46]

Still chuckle about that one. That would be the equivalent of us signing someone like Haaland today!

Wasn’t Paz the main signing and Treacle was like an afterthought to help him settle in with another South American around in those days of no internet ? [Post edited 8 Jul 18:37]

He was yes, and in reality Paz wasn't that bad it was just that we were all told we'd signed a £1M striker, which we hadn't and he wasn't. He was an OK player who I think actually cost us less than £250K.

He came as translator I believe and it was enabled by the fact he had joint Italian nationality and so was eligible to play in this country without having the international appearances that were needed to get the work permit for someone with only South American nationality.

They both came on the recommendation of Bobby Robson, if I remember rightly, think he'd been looking at them for Sporting. I don't think Taricco spoke particularly good English when he arrived, so I think the idea he came as a translator is a bit of a stretch, but having two players who spoke Spanish coming in at the same time was obviously helpful in terms of them settling in. Well, one of them did, the other one didn't.

Fairly sure that the joint Italian nationality was what enabled it, though. Was signed as one for the future that he very much turned out to be.
