I love a proper cold snap like this 08:33 - Jan 6 with 1931 viewsDubtractor

Feels like we've had winters with barely a proper frost in recent times, and as a gardener and lover of nature, I think you need this kind of freeze to give things a proper reset.

Annual plants carrying on for 2 or 3 years isn't what is supposed to happen. It's good to trim up the numbers of garden pests too.

It's also pretty stunning to go for a long walk in the countryside when the weather is like this.

Anyone else love the cold, albeit only in short bursts ideally!

Yes, with you. Beautiful crisp morning with an amazing sunrise over grey/ drizzle 11 degrees, magical outside.

I like it, I like having 4 seasons. The past few years have felt like it's been averaging 13 degrees all year round.

Watched that doc about the big freeze in 1963, maybe it's nostalgia kicking in, but always felt growing up we had lots of white Christmases when in reality that wasn't the case. What was interesting about that doc was 1963 was the first white Christmas since 1937, so even 80/90 years ago, they were as infrequent as these days.

Agree. Having to move jobs around this week though as was booked in for 4 days pressure washing patios.. Pruning apple trees instead and warm as toast in several layers of clothing.
Good reset for the garden, flora and fauna as you rightly point out.
Bonus day tomorrow cutting down a fair sized, dead old flowering cherry and the client is letting me have all the logs for my wood burning stove. Love it.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Absolutely, I’d rather a clean crisp cold day than a wet and windy one

I put on my headtorch and went for a short walk around the village last night. It was fab. A bit of snow on the ground still, crunching old leaves underfoot in the woods, cold and crisp with a near full moon rising. It’s food for the soul.

No doggers, burglars, joyriders or druggies out and about - sometimes the UK’s not too bad at all.

Almost makes it worth having to work outside in these temperatures!

I do and like others, I love proper seasons. Brings a rhythm to the year. The countryside in winter in this country is just as beautiful in its way as the summer.

I love it, the clear skies and snow & frost make for some stunning sights. The night sky has been particularly striking lately.

Took the dog for a walk last night across the fields, good for the soul as long as you're wrapped up warm.

It's the second best weather for dog walking if you ask me - it's dry, bright and all the routes that would normally be unwalkable in winter due to being fillthy muddy are passable again.

People think im odd as I prefer January and February over November and December, but this is why.

Autumn is drab, whereas days like today are lovely.

I lived in Ipswich from 1967 to 1978 and think that it was only around 1969 that we had a white Christmas.

Then again, snow was relatively uncommon there anyway if I remember rightly, maybe due to the weather features that make East Anglia the driest place in the country.

Levington is a Met Office weather station and if you switch between 1961-1990 and 1991-2020, on the following link you will see that average annual days of air frost have dropped from to 39.67 to 30.37.

It's lovely if you can sit in front of the stove and admire it through the window. Bit of a fecker though if you have to attempt to drive in it early in the morning or stand out in it all day.
Luckily, we're snowed/iced in. Schools been closed the last 2 days.

Off to make a snow dalek

It's 'why' for me, can't stand Nov/Dec, grey, dripping gloom with nights getting lomger.

Dec 21st is my Christmas Day - daylight now extending, and you can start looking for snowdrops popping the first green shoots out - then you know spring is on the way :)

When it's cold and dry like this with falling snow hanging around for days I love it and the longer the better. The approaching slushfest, not so much....but whisper it, things may just turn even colder again this month!!

I love January, quiet peaceful month after madness of December with crisps days but you can keep your snow as it’s a pain.
