GO’N thought we were the better side after the goals…. 07:47 - Sep 5 with 2728 viewsITFC_Forever

What game was he watching?

We barely laid a glove on them and it was only due to a couple of close offside decisions we didn’t concede more.

The only positives were that we didn’t capsize completely and get hit for a cricket score and those decisions went our way.

I feel the same as you.

At the game I thought we were very poor in possession most of the game gave the ball away so often and how many times did we pass to Liverpool with a simple 10 yard pass first half?

Defensively so open and easy to play through down the middle.

Yes we did well not to let it be a 5-0 after that start but I think Liverpool eased up after about 25 minutes.

I am normally very positive but I thought that last night was a bit like last time, men against boys. How many saves did Allison make?

Feels like everyone is trying to kid themselves a little, next game is massive to show if we can build on Sunderland performance and result.

I agree 100%

The match as a contest was over after 9 minutes and we just weren't anywhere near them. I had hoped GO'N might have switched things up a bit but like you say the only consolation is that we didn't ship more.

Liverpool and Manchester United aren't going to define our season - the upcoming games will be a clearer marker of where we are. But as far, I don't see a lot to suggest the final outcome will be any different to that of two seasons ago.

We had the better XG and more shots than them. Maybe that was because they were quite comfortable at 2 nil up but its fair to say that outside of the silly 9 minutes, they didnt really lay a glove on us either!

Defensively, we are going to have some issues but there was enough in our build up play to show we will give plenty of teams problems.

It was quality in the final 3rd we really lacked. Leif in particular had a poor night with crossing etc despite getting into good areas.

Sorry Jason, we really weren’t. It was over in 10 mins. We stuck at it and with some of the new players we will improve, but at this moment there’s a lot to be done.

Notwithstanding that, these top sides are what they are for a reason. They have outstanding players throughout their teams, as you’d expect given how the finances work.

What 'decisions went our way'? Being offside is not a decision to make, it's factual. Jacquet staying on the pitch despite committing a yellow card offence certainly wasn't in our favour.

If we had a competent goalkeeper, they don't score either of their goals. From that point it was a pretty evenly matched game and plenty to be positive about. It was a shame we couldn't nick a goal in the second half because Liverpool looked like they would fold if we got a bit of momentum. It was just the final ball we struggled with, whether that was delivering it too early or Fatawu taking too long and cutting inside to bend it straight out of play.

What i will say is that we were far too open first half where we needed to be more compact, we were all over the place at times but we did also carry a threat.

We’ve all seen the top five get those decisions on matter what VAR says.

And I’m giving Scherpen a bit (but only a bit) of the benefit of the doubt for the first one, as that was a rocket. Watching in real time from the SBRL, the ball was moving incredibly fast. Although he needs to do better with the second goal.

Agree with you, let’s be realistic here.
Apart from a couple of razor thin offsides they had the ball in our net again and would have had a penalty. From cutting us open relatively easily.
A game of opinions I guess!?

Liverpool were in control, honestly think that they could have gone up a gear had we got a goal back.
Let’s be honest here, we left nothing out there as far as endeavour and effort were concerned, but Allison didn’t really have to make a big save all game.
I wasn’t expecting to get much joy result wise last night, their squad player for player is better than ours but to suggest that we were the better side for 80 odd minutes is really looking at the game through blue tinted spectacles.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

I thought Liverpool were good defensively. If we had does the same as them we would be saying it was a defensive master class. They stopped us playing through the middle at all. Isolated our one up front. Pushed us into wide areas and stopped every cross at the first man or dealt with them easily (all apart from Leifs header). Think some credit has to go to them. Agree that if we had scored maybe they could have had a panic attack- but we didn’t and they didn’t.

For the record I don’t expect a result vs Liverpool. Hardly expected us to threaten them much. More hoped we would be really awkward for them to break down and give them more to think about after tow frustrating draws so far this season.

GON is trying to emphasis the positives. What do you expect him to say? We kept going & didn't fall apart like we did at Old Trafford, while there were some pleasing individual performances.

I want O'Neil to be successful it means we have but we was like a pub side opening ten minutes. Game was over Liverpool played the rest of the game in 2nd gear.

We’ve been too used to a manager that tells us the truth and went through everything in quite fine detail I’m afraid.

I think GON is one of those that says what we want to hear even if it means bending the truth.

This idea that teams deliberately play at a lower level due to a game state is so over exaggerated.

They didn't have to score but they're still trying to score goals and defend properly! They are ultra competitive people who earn millions based on goals/ assist bonus'.

I'm sure Wirtz was desperate to contribute after a poor first season, Barcola desperate for a debut goal, Allison and co desperate for a first clean sheet etc etc

Agree with the OP. There's a lot to like about GO'N's positivity generally but his take on last night was obviously just an attempt to keep our chins up. Liverpool had it won inside 10 mins and controlled the game from then on. He'll be so annoyed - as will the players I'm sure - that we didn't manage to get a foothold in the game. No doubt he'll be thinking about how to get our back 5 looking more solid because as the BBC report rightly said we look there for the taking against top quality attackers. Still, as we all know, the season rests on getting results against teams outside the top 6.

What I would say is they had concerns re Leif. Now I'm not going to use the word panic, but in that 2nd half at one point after a Leif run the full back looked at the centre half with hands open and then van Dijk, was shouting at Szoboszlai, and a very animated Iraola was waving at Szoboszlai as if to say you need to provide support.

Now as I said it wasn't a panic but Leif's runs were certainly forcing them back on the left and resulted a bit of argressive hand messages to their midfield to provide cover.

So I will take that as a positive that even Liverpool were struggling with Leif's runs from deep.

And how encouraging would that be to a new team, to a fanbase that turns negative as soon as we lose if he had said we were shocking, didn't stand a chance against a far better team may as well give up now???

We were not the better team, we limited them and actually was it a penalty???? About time VAR went our way after last weeks fiasco.

i love his positivity and thats gonna be so needed in a long tough season, if we get battered by the likes of palace, fulham, Hull etc i wouldn't expect quite so much optimism from him

Agreed. Game was over in first ten minutes and Liverpool controlled the game. They were in first gear. We didn’t test them at all. They are of course a better side than us, but how anyone can think we were the better side is absurd. They have a mid week game so relaxed. Ultimately, a simple win.

Such a shame his end product was well off his usual standard last night..... otherwise we may have actually tested them

Exactly this, no team is going to think ok 2-0 we have this won lets just not try anymore..... We did at times trouble them and upped our game without a doubt we just had little end product and despite shots on target not one tested their keeper. Liverpool will batter teams this year much more than 2-0

GO’N thought we were the better side after the goals…. on 09:35 - Sep 5 with 1345 viewsITFCSG

Nonsense. You could sense that Liverpool knew the game was wrapped up after the first 10 minutes and they barely got out of second gear. Yet we couldn't even lay a glove on them unlike Forest and Newcastle. Huffed and puffed a lot but zero end product. I don't think Alisson was even forced to make any good saves.

Probably conserving their energy for their mid-week CL game against Atlético.

Anyone who thinks we were better side is deluded.

Crazy really that people have been following football for a long time and haven't yet realised that part of a manager's job is PR.

If he goes full Paul Lambert and starts describing a string of crap performances/results as 'fantastic' etc. then I think people have more of a right to get annoyed.

Just because I don't care doesn't mean I don't understand.
