Hyam Signs New Deal
Hyam Signs New Deal
Wednesday, 1st Feb 2012 16:51

Midfielder Luke Hyam has signed his new one-year deal with the Blues, taking him up to the end of June 2013. The 20-year-old, a product of Town Academy, has recently broken back into the first team and along with Andy Drury is keeping senior players such as Jimmy Bullard and Grant Leadbitter out of the side.

Former Northgate High School pupil Hyam told the club site: "I'm delighted to have signed the new deal and now I'm looking to push on with Ipswich.

“It was disappointing to be out of the side earlier in the season, but I've worked hard and forced my way back into the team and I'd like to think I've been rewarded with this new contract.

"The manager has told me to carry on working hard and I'm looking to become a regular in the side now.

"I'm really enjoying my football at the minute and it's great to be playing regularly for Ipswich."

Town are still waiting on Josh Carson to sign his new two-year contract, which includes an option for a third season, while Ronan Murray and Jack Ainsley have recently put pen to paper on new deals.

Should have been another 3 and a half years. We should be building the side around him, JET, Martin, Drury, Carson etc

Well done Luke because you've shown commitent to come back having been out of the first team picture earlier this season.

Your passion to be playing for Ipswich Town is evident and you deserve praise (as do all of the team) for the part you played in last nights win.

I look forward to seeing you continue to get games under your belt at Town making yourself an integral part of our first team.

This is great news but why just one year? This time next year we will be negotiating again or a young player could walk on a free in June 2013.

If we have a 3-5 plan then young players like Hyam are either part of the plan or not.

Clegg doesn't seem to admit he has an issue managing risk with these deals. Look at the situation we are in now and also come June with a raft of current deals expiring. This must and has affected player performance and therefore impacts the team. Still unsure about PJ but the current strategy, if I can call it that, on players contracts needs a wholesale review.

Well done young 'un. You have been showing more 'regarded' players what it means to actually play with passion and pride. Keep improving as you are and you will do well.

To all those moaning about a 1 year deal, how do we know that there's not an option for an extra year ala Scotland?

I assume it would have been mentioned in the article, ala Carson...

If Hyam keeps this form up though we'll give him another one in the summer, or a sensible club would at least.

Nice one Lukey boy......

I reckon if he carries on in the team this season, they may extend it ealy like they did with Cressy.

Has anyone else noticed? We have a good record with this lad in the side, under Roy Keane's tenure he was given many a handful of games at the start of the season, we largely won most of them.

Bleedingblue - we don't but the current situation (number of deals expiring this June) and that experienced 7 months ago doesn't make me believe this is the case. Happy to be proved wrong.

For some time now and it started prior to Clegg, our Contract dealings have been poor - players leaving on a free, undervalued in their transfer price with the possible exception of Wickham and the total number of deals expering at the same time is poor risk management. PJ stated in August that he didn't realise how bad it was and also 2 months ago stated that the problem is bad again in June.

If, as a club, we want to improve, this is a glaring opportunity. I am not saying pay the most, but incentivise longer deals and structure bonuses based on winning and promotion. Stagger the deals so that only 4-5 members of the squad expire at the same time. This to me is just common sense!

great news, after his recent performances i have high hopes for hyam. as a combative midfield ball winner he already looks assured and effective, he wouldn't be bullied by the likes of nolan and carlton cole, as we spanked the hammers last night. don't forget, these players posed a much larger physical threat and posses experience in abundance. he will only get bigger, stronger and better. i do feel his ball distribution is not great at the moment, or should i say not as strong as other areas, but hardly a criticism as he is young and developing with each game. glad to see his taking his chance and im sure the manager will reward him with a longer term deal on better terms should he continue to progress over the coming year ala cresswell. felt tommy smith had as good a game as ive seen him play. i know its just one game but have a renewed optimism after last night. with a few wise loans we may well be able to rescue this season, finish respectfully and look forward to a brighter future COYB

Why only a year extension? Cleeeeeegg! Has proven his capability first with Kean and now with Jewel. Should be three.

Keeping the young players on short contracts keeps them hungry, I guess.

Congratulations Luke. Immense last night and count yourself unfortuante to of been overlooked for so long.

For a young lad, he shows the maturity of a far more experienced player. Good that ITFC are doing what we have always been good at - promoting youth. COYB
