Cresswell Player of the Year
Cresswell Player of the Year
Saturday, 21st Apr 2012 21:54

Left-back Aaron Cresswell has been named Town's Player of the Year for 2011/12. The summer signing from Tranmere beat skipper Carlos Edwards into second place with Lee Martin in third.

The 22-year-old wasn’t present at tonight's Supporters Club Player Awards Evening at the Cameo Hotel after pulling a hamstring in this afternoon’s 3-0 home defeat to Millwall.

The Liverpool-born defender tweeted his appreciation to those who voted for him or who have sent him congratulations: "Thanks for all the messages, happy to have won the award, means a lot! Appreciate your support!"

Carlos Edwards won the Away Match Passport Holders’ Player of the Year, while Icelandic first-year scholar Gunnar Thorsteinsson, a midfielder or defender, won the Dale Roberts Trophy for the Academy Player of the Year.

Cresswell and Edwards... In a defence that that has leaked 75 goals in the Championship, says it all really unfortunately. Having said that, they're great attacking outlets

Well done young man in what has been a difficult season. Has shown improvement on a steady basis after a big step up from league 1. Well deserved award.

Oh give it a bloody rest!

Cresswell has been the standout player this year by far and has taken a massive step up from playing in League One with Tranmere and has become one of the best LB's in the Championship. He's been consistent week in week out and never given up. Hell of a cross too!

People that want it given to the likes of Martin, Chopra, JET etc... It's called player of the SEASON. Not player of half the season.

great news! Thoroughly deserved, I think this shows that Jewell should look towards younger players who are hungry and want to impress! I'm hoping Cresswell will be better next season and will be part of a promotion winning team.

Well done to Aaron for a really good first season at Ipswich. Left-back has been a problem at Ipswich for many years, with the likes of aging Thatcher and Kennedy, and a host of players out-of-position such as Wright, Peters, Delaney and Smith played there. To have such a good player at the age of 22 is real positive for us looking forwards.

Good news, I voted for Aaron Cresswell, however i do think this shows just how much of a poor season this has been. When was the last time a left back won player of the year? If it's a good season you will nearly always see strikers, (for scoring the goals to make it a good season) creative midfielders (for pulling the strings and creating the chances) or centre halves (for keeping strikers out and constantly being a rock at the back) winning this award, hence a left back winning it this year shows a poor season. However i'm not a moaner like some on this site and am actually extremely positive about next season. We do need a goalkeeper, one or two centre backs, possibly a right back, a winger and a striker or two. So a big job in the summer and i really think this summer will be so decisive for PJ. Sink or swim, i for one hope he gets it right.

Chopra should have won it, at least he's done something that we can recognise. Cresswell has been voted for because he's young and one for the future, we are desperate.

So good, I voted for him six times! He may be part of a leaky defence, but rarely has he been at fault for the goals conceded. I'd love to see how many he has a) prevented through blocks, goal line clearances and saving tackles, and b) how many he has set up with incisive crossing, intelligent running and hard work. Great player. We need to find a right-footed version!

Surely that isn't a serious post? Literally all of it is wrong.

Well done Cressy. Easily the correct choice given the step up!
He now joins other great player of the year full-backs like Burley, Mills, Stockwell, Taricco - hopefully a sign of things to come...

Totally agree with unbelievable Jeff the award is for player of the season so Cressie deserved to win to all those who thought Chopra should win probably voted for Bullard last year.

Well done Cresswell. Got my vote, just ahead of Edwards. would have given it to Martin from xmas onwards. No other sensible candidates in my view. Lets hope we can get one or two more like him in the summer.

Why do the club not announce this at the last home game anymore...another stupic policy of the owners now. We arethe supporters and I would have liked to have seem this and shown appreciation for the player who won. Well done Cressy.

I understand why people are questioning a defender winning it - particularly after conceeding so many goals ...

BUT this is well deserved. Certainly a very good signing - a player who will hopefully be in the side for two or three more seasons (min). That's the type of player I expect PJ to sign - not loans, not ageing players on one year deals - but young hungry players like Cresswell, who will be a permanent fixture in the side.

Well done Cresswell - well deserved. Ditto Edwards and Martin.

Well done mate, hopefully improve further next season (and then a Premiership club will be in for you).

The rest were pretty much of a muchness really, maybe Edwards & Martin the next best as voted but a few not even deserving to wear an Ipswich shirt.

Don't get this! One of the worst defensive records in the league and Cresswell has played more than his part in this. I may not be popular in saying this but I don't rate this guy at all. He can't beat a player, I feel he is easlily found out when being attacked by a tricky winger. He's early crosses and assists early in the season must have won him this award because he hasn't done much in the 2nd half of the season for me. We signed him as a free scoring full backed who has managed just one deflected lucky goal for us this season. Hope he proves me wrong next season as he has age on his side. A few of my friends i sit with feel the same as me on this.... For Cresswell to win player of the year sums up our season in many ways really doesn't it!
