Jewell Won't Quit as Redknapp Speculation Grows Saturday, 22nd Sep 2012 18:32 Town boss Paul Jewell insisted that he won’t quit after the Blues’ 2-1 home defeat to Charlton, which kept them in 23rd in the Championship after seven games.
Asked whether he was going to lose his job, Jewell said: “I don’t know. You’re asking the wrong man. I’m not going to quit. It’s not an easy situation, but I’m not going to chuck it in.”
Rumours continue to circulate regarding former Spurs boss Harry Redknapp being lined up to take over at Portman Road with claims that some bookies have stopped taking bets, although one of those cited, SkyBet, is still offering odds of 20/1 at the time of writing.
Jewell was unaware of the betting gossip and says that if Redknapp is being groomed for the job, there’s nothing he can do about it: “I didn’t know about that until I was told in the corridor.
“Unfortunately, for you guys I don’t buy newspapers, I don’t go on the Internet, I don’t do Twitter, I don’t do Facebook. I know that I’m not doing very well at the moment, I know by the league table, it’s the only thing that I look at.
“If Harry Redknapp’s going to become manager of Ipswich, that’ll happen. What am I going to do about it?
“If Marcus Evans wants to put Harry Redknapp in charge, he can do that. He can do whatever he wants.
“Can I affect that? The only way I can affect that is by working as hard as I can and by trying to get it right. I ain’t going to stop doing that.
“If he makes a change, I’ll speak to you after that. If he doesn’t, I’ll speak to you on Monday,” he added.
Owner Marcus Evans — who gave Jewell his backing at Wednesday’s home loss to Wolves — was at the game.
Regarding the match itself, Jewell was again left bemoaning his side’s tendency to concede bad goals: “I’m disappointed obviously, with the result and the goals we gave away were catastrophic.
“Having said we’ve had no luck lately, we had a bit of luck with the goal, but we didn’t have the belief to go on and pepper their goal and get an equaliser and maybe go on and win it. You’re always susceptible to being hit on the break.
“That’s a truthful summing up. I could sit here and say we missed Paul Taylor and Michael Chopra, we did, but I still think we’ve got enough to do better than what we did. They are giving everything they’ve got but everything they’ve got isn’t good enough.”
He admitted his side was poorer than in their previous matches: “I can’t say we were the better team today, but in the last two matches we’ve been the better team and haven’t taken chances and suffered the consequences.
“We started the game OK. We had possession of the ball on both goals and all of a sudden we found ourselves 2-0 down with 35 minutes to go.
“We’re making basic errors and getting punished for them. At the moment, and I include myself in that, we’re just not good enough. I’ll keep going and will expect the team to keep going, maybe make one or two adjustments, and see if we can move forward.”
Jewell says new loan signing Danny Higginbotham was a sub, having arrived at the club late last night: “He didn’t get here until 1.45 this morning, that was why he was on the bench.
“He didn’t finish training until 4.30 and by the time he got himself down here and signed the papers he didn’t feel as if the preparation he’d had was enough for a Championship match, hence him being on the bench.”
The Town manager said he hoped striker Michael Chopra will be over his thigh strain in time to face Barnsley at Oakwell next Saturday.
Charlton manager Chris Powell was pleased his side got their first away win of the season: “It’s been a tough time for ourselves and Ipswich recently, so it was a game that Paul looked at as an opportunity to get back on track and so did I, and I’m very pleased that we’re the ones who have come out on top.
“I felt over the 90 minutes we deserved it. It was a sterling performance by all my players and they showed a really good side of their character.”

I have supported The Town for over 40 years. The last 3 to 4 years have just about been the worst ever that I can recollect. I did not want Roy Keane within 100 miles of our beloved club but trusted the owner. He took us back even further especially the diabolical sale of a certain Mr Jordan Rhodes - and Roy Keane tells us what he knows on ITV Sport - what a joke. His past actions especially with the Irish team were an utter disgrace and then he tarnished our great great club. We then entrust the extremely likeable Paul Jewell. His Wigan team were superb. But as we all know, to try and recreate something from history rarely happens. Many of us want it to work for Paul but I feel the time has come for a change. it just isn't working and no, it is not too early in the season. The rot is setting in and we must and have to act decisively and change now. I'm sorry it didn't work out Paul I like you, a lot of us like you - it seems the time is right to make the change and swiftly. In a perfect world I would like a young buck manager on the up but the only one that seems to be on the up is Paulo Di'Cannio or similar (- is there another one out there ?) and he is too much of a risk at this stage. Perhaps Harry Redknapp - tried and trusted for this season and then for him to assist a rising star for next year. I fear this season could get worse still unless decisive action is taken and now. If we can't afford Harry then I would accept Mick McCarthy - a proven manager at this level and treated very badly by Wolves - he has a lot to prove and could be very good for us. My personal favourite would be ex Charlton manager Alan Curbishley - a perfect fit and match for our club.

Jim Magilton, when not fighting players, was rubbish. There is a reason he has not found a job since.

Up until now I have been saying give PJ more time but having witnessed today's match I feel that it is time for a change at the top. Unfortunately we are no longer in the era where a failing manager has the honesty to resign.

Forget about criticising the strikers (even though we havent had a decent one since Marcus Stewart), the fact is that you have virtually no chance of winning games if you are going to concede 2 goals every match and there have been way too many games where we have conceded more than that. For me, PJ is totally culpable for our error strewn, panicky defending - whether its not hiring a defensive coach or in not drilling the team to defend as a whole or simply, not bringing in the right players. A manager in any walk of life is employed to hire and manage people. If that manager hires the wrong people repeatedly and they fail to deliver then I expect that manager to be fired no matter how plausible (or in the case of PJ, comic) his reasons for failure are. What you dont do is wait for the Titanic to hit the iceberg. As to the replacement. Have't we read enough in the last few months about players nearly signing for us to see that the rumour mill is no more than that - purely gossip. Come on guys, get in to the real world. Redknapp is more likely to go to Liverpool when Rogers gets sacked (or some other Prem, or even a better resourced Champ tdeam) than come to us. Personally, I'd love to see Curbishley but McCarthy is probably the most realistic candidate. Even he though is not as realistic as PJ staying at (F?)PR for the time being. I know that it makes us all sick to give any credence to that but look at the loyalty shown him last season after an even longer stretch of appalling results

If, as the club say, we're committed to ffp how would this fit in with a redknapp vision. Everywhere he goes he falls out with the owners because of the lack of financial backing he thinks he' s entitled too. I agree with a previous post, Michael appleton is a great shout. Handled himself incredibly well at Pompey and getting results under extreme circumstances. Young, passionate and committed in the best traditions of itfc

Yep Curbishley would be my first choice too, although he's been out of the game for a while - other than that maybe an Ipswich connected management team, Burley/Holland Butcher/Holland (just clutching at straws here).

Just to add I've supported Ipswich since 1975 and this is easily the worst period (2009-PRESENT) I can remember, yes and you John Duncan haters it's worse than that period too (we were never in the relegation zone).

Any manager with any dignity would have quit by now but Jewellosaurus will hang on for dear life because after his dismal record with Derby and then Ipswich who on earth would employ him? And he knows it. Please Clegg surely we have passed the tipping point with Jewell? Give the fans some hope before this clown drags us down any more with his antiquated management.
megamoth added 21:49 - Sep 22
TimmyH - totally agree. I have supported since 1980 and remember the Duncan years that were a part of the wilderness years. Dreary and mediocre but the defeats were never as spectacular and I dont remember seriously entertaining relegation as a possibility

i certainly do not want to see Harry Redknapp as the next manager of ITFC. Mick McCarthy would be a better bet i think.

Megamoth- great post I would add that a Manager is Managed- This is Cleggs job, he is culpable to. Without getting rid of Clegg the mess will continue. Clegg helps sets the direction for the club, he should help set the plan and in surely everyones eyes he is failing. I beleive that with a good chief exec in place Evans could have been pushed to invest in the centre back we have so badly needed for the past 2 years.- Pearce? Unless we bring in a manager of great experience and strength and who really knows the job inside out ( Jewells CV could suggest this though) we have no hope Curbishley has been out of the game for so long we could find ourselves in the same fat scouse shaped mess. I am lost, the club lacks direction, organisation and belief. Newmarket is down the road- would Sir Alex consider the job?

a friend on mine was at the game this afternoon and took a picture of "STEVE KEAN" (blackburn manager) at portman road today watching the game. i have heard that he is on his way out of blackburn. i dont see redknapp being at portman road, however personaly i would like to see him there as he can attract the right players. but could STEVE KEAN do a job for us?

I have quietly been reading the jewell out posts on here for a while now believing PJ will make good soon. But.... After today even I have lost the faith. Sorry PJ but I think your time is up unfortunately. There is only so many times I can hear the same old excuses, same old mistakes and no apparent improvement. Makes me wonder if the players have this feeling too.
Tractastic added 22:06 - Sep 22
Agreed MickMillsTash - Clegg needs to accept some responsibility for this mess and i would love to see him go with Jewellosaurus but bearing in mind his close relationship with ME i think this is unlikely? The only way forward is for a very strong manager who can manage 'upwards' and Harry or Mick McCarthy do tick the boxes. I would love to see a younger up coming manager like Karl Robinson given a chance but i feel Clegg would probably stifle him. Lets just hope something gives in the next 48 hours.

I'm not normally one to jump on the band wagon but on this one I'm getting a leg up from plenty of town fans who like me have giving pj time to prove his worth, but there comes a time when you must admit defeat,I'm sorry to say in the time pj has been at town I can honestly say I really am struggling to work out his philosophy ,he really does not have enough tactical awareness to drive us forward,Paul your time has come to fall on your sword goodbye and good luck, Here's to a brighter future!
