McCarthy: Mings Could Be Involved Quickly Thursday, 13th Dec 2012 18:06
Manager Mick McCarthy says Tyrone Mings will be in and around the first team squad very quickly if he plays as he did in his trial match on Monday. The 19-year-old signed an 18-month deal with the Blues earlier this afternoon after the club agreed a deal with the Evo-Stik Southern League side, which includes a pre-season friendly at the Wiltshire club.
McCarthy said: “Tyrone has a pedigree of being at a club with his time at Southampton and, through Russell and Steve McCall, who became aware of him, we brought him here on Monday to have a look at him against the Nike Academy.
“He played at left-back. He’s quick, he’s 6ft 3in, he loves a tackle. He’s only 19 but plays the game like a bloke. He’s a good talker, organises and we’re delighted to have him in.
“He’s going to be in and around the squad pretty quickly if he shows everything he did on Monday.
“There is loads to work with. We are going to give him an opportunity and it will be great if it works out.”
In addition to being with the Saints’ academy between the ages of eight and 15, Mings, whose father Adie recently left his role as Chippenham's director of football to take up a scouting position at Chelsea, has spent spells with Bristol Rovers and Yate Town, as well as at Millfield School.
Speaking in an interview with Ipswich Player, Mings, who has been handed the number 15 shirt, says it’s been quite a week since he first discovered that Town wanted him to come on trial at the end of last week: “It’s just been a crazy time really. This time last week I was working as a mortgage broker. Something I have been doing for nine months.
“Then I found out at the end of last week that Ipswich wanted me to come in and play in a friendly. After the game the manager said he’d like to sign me and here we are. It’s been a bit of a whirlwind.”
Russell Osman's son Toby, who had a trial himself with the Blues in 2007, played alongside the Blues new signing at Chippenham and is claiming responsibility for his now-former team-mate's move, tweeting: "Congrats to my man Tyrone on his move! If anyone wants to speak to [him] please come through his agent [Toby Osman]!"
Mings says a number of clubs, including Hereford United, had shown interest this season but nothing beyond that: “There have been a few clubs said to be interested but nothing has materialised until now. This is a life-changing opportunity for me and I’ve got to make sure I take it.”

Once again everybody will think that because he's young he's good. It's like hyam he's no good but people think he is purely because he came through the academy.
There was a lot of negativity about Cresswell when he signed i seem to remember, lots of people with opinions who hadnt seen him play. Of the player himself i have no opinion, but in mick i trust and any way hardly a bank buster is it? Worth the gamble......COYB
lets give him a chance! we shldnt be judging until what we see on the pitch! This is the kind of signing that we fans have all been asking for over the past few years instead of premier league rejects! Welcome Tyrone.. hopefully another Chris Smalling story COYB
Jumper looks a bit big mate lol. But seriously wish you the best, this squads starting to shape up now. Busy January coming up for mick. I wouldn't sighn anyone new, just try get Danny higginbottam, daryl murphy dj etc on permanents and that will do me mate. I'm really loving having mick encharge of this club, first person to actually now what there doing. COYB
I wish him all the best, could be one oof those young hungry players i kept hearing about. On another note, although hardly a secret, i think Forrester at Brentford looks pretty good.
Giving him the number 15 shirt seems to suggest he really will be in and around the squad. Best of luck to the lad - what an opportunity for him! What dreams are made of.
The 2nd Left back MM has signed since he has been at the club.... I personally do not overlly rate Cresswell, he's delivery is poor, he can't beat a man and despite some improvement in recent weeks he over-all form has been poor for us this season. Dispite this alot of Town fans seem to rate him (over rate). I just don't see it sorry. I'm not alone i know and it see's Mick may just have a sililar view. Time will tell........
You get the impression with Big Mick that he isn't going to sign a young prospect and let him rot in the reserves. I think this is bye bye Higgo in January. In Mick we trust COYB!
Let's not jump to conclusions on this lad, some lower league players don't seem to perform particularly well week in week, but certainly have ability, hopefully Mick can extract that on a regular basis, especially given football will now be his full time job.
Not comparing him to Smalling, but he made the jump quickly, and I remember my mate at Maidstone said he was good, but wasn't that great when he went to Fulham.
He might not make it, but let's just wait and see. I'm in no position to comment, never seen him play, let alone on a regular basis.
