Town Confirm Murphy Deal
Friday, 7th Jun 2013 14:14

Town have confirmed that Daryl Murphy has agreed a two-year permanent deal at Portman Road. On Saturday, TWTD revealed that the 30-year-old, a veteran of three loan spells with the Blues, was close to a deal having been released by Celtic.

Murphy told the club site that he is happy to finally be a Town player on a full-time basis: “I’m delighted to be back.

"I had a chat with the manager at the end of the season and I’m pleased to get the deal done and finally be an Ipswich player on a permanent basis.

“It’s well documented that I love being at Ipswich and I made no secret that I wanted to return. The fans have been great with me every time I’ve been here and I think the club is really heading in the right direction.

“Tabby has joined too which is great to see and, like me, he saw the potential the side was showing last season and was keen to come back here.

“Now the focus is getting ready for the new season and I’m already looking forward to coming back for pre-season and meeting up with all the lads again.”

The Irishman, whose terms will start on July 1st when his contract at Parkhead formally ends, spent the whole of 2012/13 on loan at Portman Road, scoring seven goals in 33 starts and seven sub appearances.

Capped nine times by Ireland without scoring, striker or left midfielder Murphy made 32 starts and two sub appearances for Town during his another season-long loan during 2011/12, netting four goals.

Murphy, who said he was delighted to be back on an official club keek, was previously with the Blues during the second half of the 2009/10 season when he scored six goals in 18 appearances before moving from Sunderland to Celtic that summer.

While with hometown club Waterford United, Murphy spent several spells on trial at Portman Road during the 2004/05 campaign but eventually opted to join the Premier League Black Cats, then managed by current Town boss Mick McCarthy.

Holds the ball up really well and gives us a target man others can play off. Good addition to the squad even though he wouldn't make my first 11

It would be hilarious if we now sent him out on loan.

I think he's done enough to get a permanent deal. Adds a bit of a physical presence up front. Really need defensive cover, possibly a right back and some pacey wingers now.

Good! Wins headers, holds the ball up, chips in with goals, and is obviously keen as anything to play for Ipswich Town.

Think we could do with another striker if Chopra leaves, but Murph is a good addition. He and McGoldrick looked good together last season.

Certainly a good addition to our squad. Wants to be here gives plenty of effort. May not be prolific but he gives us options. Welcome back Daryl.

Cookra- You say we should be looking for a different kind of player and then in the next breath say he is "a good squad player" In a long hard season surely we need "good squad players", strength and depth is all important and something we have lacked in recent years. I take your point about young and hungry players, IMO Murphy has never lacked hunger and is a fine example of good work ethic and professionalism for young players to learn from. He'll never be a world beater but is versatile and solid. I'm not having a go just putting it out there.

He's made over 90 appearances without being a permanent Ipswich player. I wonder if there's another example of such a thing occurring.

As for Murphy the player, he's good. Not great, of course, but he gives us an option and he works hard. Most important, however, is what he brings to the defensive side of our game. How often has he been a key component of our defense from set pieces? If he can add a few more goals to his game this coming season, then he could be significant.

Good news - Mick going quietly about his business - signing Murphy, Tabb, Skuse, McGoldrick. Fully fit Hewitt, Taylor, Wordsworth will be like new signings. Still need a couple of defenders & a goalkeeper for cover. I wouldn't be surprised if Evans pays up Chopra's contract so that his extortionate wages won't be taken into account under FFP, thereby giving Mick more options to make further signings. I think next season is looking good.

Good signing, always gives 100%, glad MM is getting his signings in early before pre-season starts. This was problem with Keane and Jewell new signings came in to late and we always started season badly and spent rest of season playing catch up.

Guys, it's the 7th of June and we've signed 3 players already. Just think about that! Quite refreshing to see Mick being so proactive this summer.

It's interesting really because as far as squad development is concerned, I think half the battle will be won if we just secure the permanent deals of the players we ended last season with. There wasn't much that needed to be done to the team. If we can confirm McGoldrick's deal and get Stearman back then that part is pretty much sorted, and there's still the rest of the summer to find the other additions we need to make the difference.

Oh, and glad Murphy's finally tied down. Town's perennial odd-job contractor is finally a proper part of the club! :)

im sorry but he hasnt made an impact over the last three seaons we have had him. Surely we want to be looking forward and getting more enthusiastic players on the pitch. McGoldrick played the holding/assisting role well.... he actually looks threatning. Murphy doesnt!
