Bishop Out for the Rest of the Season
Thursday, 28th Dec 2017 15:57

Midfielder Teddy Bishop has been ruled out for the season after rupturing his hamstring in Boxing Day’s 0-0 home draw with QPR.

The 21-year-old, who was making his first start of the season and only his second of 2017, was forced off after 40 minutes of Tuesday’s match and, following scans, has been told he requires surgery.

“Bish needs surgery which is devastating for all of us,” manager Mick McCarthy told the club site.

“He’s a great lad and the lads all love him but, of course, the one that is suffering the most at the moment is Bish himself. "

“It will be another challenge for him, both physically and mentally but he will get great support from everyone at the club and we wish him a speedy recovery.”

Bishop, who has made only 28 senior appearances since the end of his breakthrough 2014/15 campaign due to a succession of injury problems, had only just returned from a hernia operation he underwent in August.

The Cambridge-born youngster's contract is up at the end of the season but with the Blues having an option to keep him for a further year.

Town already have two other central midfielders, Emyr Huws and Andre Dozzell (both knee), ruled out for the season, while four other midfield players are also currently sidelined, Tom Adeyemi (hamstring), Flynn Downes (calf), Tristan Nydam (hip) and Luke Hyam (knee). Kevin Bru missed the Boxing Day game as he was at a funeral.

On another note there is clearly something seriously wrong with our players conditioning... this number is injuries is not normal.

Absolutely gutted, possibly our best midfield assets in bishop, dozzell and hues all out till next season. The only positive I can take from that is it will give them more time to recover and not be rushed into it due to the break. Something has got to be wrong at the club with the way we deal with all this, it's ridicioulous. We are basically the arsenal of the championship in terms of injuries. Need to have a serious look at our procedures for all this...... a good recovery to the half of the squad that is injured.

Gutted for him.

Surprised we even got 40 minutes out of him this season. Another complete waste of money like Luke Hyam whose wages could be better spent on a player who might actually contribute to us. Obviously got potential but how long can you go on throwing money down the drain. We scrape by on a small budget as it is.

So sad for him, the fact that it was an unrelated injury to his previous one must give him hope that he's just had astonishing bad luck and there's a path back for him. Take up the option on his contract now so he doesn't have that hanging over him, get him back to full fitness, and try again.

Such a shame. Sadly this could go the same way as Hyam. Let's hope not. Age is definitely on his side.

Whilst I feel very sorry for Bishop, this is just bloody ridiculous, and you have to challenge training and conditioning methods used at the Club!

TBH I think it would be best if bishop and Hyam were released. Unfortunately they now bring nothing to the team anymore. In most industries, if people were that unproductive they would eventually be released and told to find alternative employment

All these injuries what part does McCarthy's emphasis on proper bloke and doing the dirty stuff have to play?

Agree with lightingblue, Sounds harsh I know but as we are a club that clearly is stringent with finances we can't keep paying players that are unable to regularly play for the team.

Who the hell is responsible for training at the club? We always seem to suffer horrendous long term injuries.

Such sad news. Great well soon, Teddy. We all hope to see you back in a blue shirt soon!

History shows that players with this kind of appalling injury record as youngsters - and don't forget he spent most of his youth-team career injured too - never change ; physically some people are just not cut out to be professional sports men/women. As I said a year ago : time to cash in the insurance policy for Bishop, and Hyam too.

really feel for Bish! is this all really bad luck? whats going?

Most of these injuries happened during matches, not training. Dozzell was injured in the first match of the season after spending the summer with England and having a different training regime. I doubt very much that it's the coaches at ITFC doing the damage. It's just a question of bad luck.
Young players like Bishop and Hyam earn a lot more than I do but their salaries are not enormous by Championship standards, so it's worth hanging on to them. It's another matter with an Andy Carroll who earns silly money and is never fit.

Really feel for him. I hope he comes back stronger from this. Quality player when fit

Agree that it seems we have loads of injured players but looking around, lots of other clubs have multiple injuries, too. I guess I t's why squads are so big these days, especially in midfield.

And.. we have a lot of younger players whose bodies are still developing which I guess has extra risk attached. Plus, were some of our signings riskier (and cheaper?) due to injuries in the past?

I dont know but I'd be amazed if it was anything to do with how they are trained, clubs are all bound to use latest science here. It will be behind squad rotation though - we desparately need no others.

feel so sorry for the lads bishop and hyam to be fair i know theyll be doing all their rehab and everything they can to get back player because as a footballer its all you think about doing! ive been there myself with reocurring injuries and i never recieved the top notch physios they have these days! it does make you wonder why it happens, you do all the training day in day out fine then as soon as your chucked into a full match they breakdown! its worrying at there age its happening i mean i started pulling calfs etc in late 20s. vincent kompany is another one that seems to just get injured. its devastating for the player mentally to keep getting up off the ground like this! i dont think their wages are very much and the quality the lad possesses is worth taking a gamble on again and hopefully he can get a run of games going next season

It's harsh to say it but we cannot keep paying people to sit on the treatment table year in, year out!

If we take up the option of extending Bishops contract it can only be on a pay as you play basis surely?

Such sad news. He is both of my sons favourite player after they met him at the 2016 summer camp. We have followed his progress from the latest injury and where very happy to see him start last game as we hade come over from Sweden to see it. Best man on the pitch up until the injury. Take your time and make sure you get strong and fit, and hope for a long and fantastic career with ITFC!!

Another one like Jonny Williams: excellent player but can't keep off the treatment table. Not his fault, obviously, but looks like he's going to have one of those injury-blighted careers.

The Championship is a very tough league and requires tough players.

Some of the comments on here such as get rid, waste of space etc. are so depressing. I guess these are the same people who demand bright young players are played every game and pillory the manager when he doesn't flog them to death but tries to protect them and uses them sparingly, and instead uses proven pros as his workhorses. MM has not been afraid to play youngsters and he has tried to use his old pros as the mainstay. of the team. I applaud him for that.
The relentless demands on players today is a serious issue for the sport. Players once injured frequently suffer hamstring type injuries on their return from a long layoff. Not MMs fault just a fact of life in modern football.
I for one would hate to see Town let Bish go only for him to blossom into a Premiership player over the next year or so. If that happened MM would get crucified by the moaners.

Sad to say, but this one just isn't tough enough for a career in the game. Some players will continually be sick notes for this very reason. We have had a few .... !!
Involved in 28 games in three seasons, tells it's own story - no further proof needed. Absolute shame because he has talent - but it's takes a bit more than that to be have a successful career in the game.

Careers aren't made on the treatment table, that's for sure.
