Warburton Latest Boss Linked
Sunday, 1st Apr 2018 11:24

Former Brentford, Rangers and Nottingham Forest boss Mark Warburton is the latest manager to be linked with the Town job which will become vacant when Mick McCarthy moves on in the summer.

According to The Sun on Sunday Warburton is competing with ex-England boss Steve McClaren - who the same paper claimed was Town’s top choice for the job last week - to succeed McCarthy at Portman Road.

"Warburton, 55, who has been out of work since leaving the City Ground on New Year’s Eve, is said to be interested in the job.

Meanwhile, Luton boss Nathan Jones was unaware of links with Town when quizzed about his potential interest in a move to the Blues.

“It’s not the first time I’ve been linked, but I actually haven’t seen that, it’s the first I’ve heard about it,” the 44-year-old Welshman told Dunstable Today.

“I’ve got a job to do here and let’s just concentrate on getting promoted [from League Two] as that's the most important thing.”

Lincoln’s Danny Cowley - who played down the speculation linking him with Town on Thursday - remains the bookies’ favourite for the job at 6-4 with SkyBet, although would be a surprise appointment given his lack of Football League experience.

Ex-Blues skipper and coach Tony Mowbray, understood to be top of owner Marcus Evans’s list of potential appointments but currently flying high in League One with Blackburn, is second favourite at 11-4.

Wigan boss Paul Cook, 51, who we also understand is a manager admired by the Town owner, has climbed to third-favourite at 7-2. McClaren, 10-1, Warburton, 16-1, and Jones, 22-1, are further down the betting at the time of writing.

Meanwhile, the Blues and Middlesbrough are keen on a summer move for veteran Aston Villa right-back Alan Hutton, according to the Sunday People.

Scotland international Hutton, 33, will be out of contract at the end of the season.

Given the Town management situation, any player speculation can currently be taken with a pinch of salt.

At 16-1 still seems highly unlikely. Saying that I'd be surprised if it's the favourite, Danny Cowley given the fact that he's dismissed the link.

Not for me. Did well at Brentford but nothing else anywhere else. Would be a boring appointment from the manager merry go round.

Prefer a bit of a gamble choice-someone to get some enthusiasm going, either a club legend like McGreal or Mogga (my personal preference) or a someone else who's done well in lower levels.

Poldark,
I live in Southend and watch them when not watching Ipswich.Southend had a Very off day and made Plymouth look good.I think the Plymouth manager would be a bit out of his comfort zone here. But who knows.🤐

Warburtons a likable fella, I'd roll with that, even though his off that ‘MERCENARY' managers ‘merry go round'. Someone fresh like Cowley or Jones would be tops with me, assuming their up for keeping the ball on the deck, why not take the risk??

@cat Cowley is not the manager for you if you like keeping the ball on the deck. Their style is very McCarthyesque

Warburton will need a lot of dough to roll the team into shape or he'll get a lot of French stick. Might kneed to baton down the hatches.

I would be happy with Warburton. He did a great job at Brentford and Rangers. Forest not so much but then that club has been a bit of a mess for some time.

Plays football the right way, has proven he can work on a small budget and seems a good character. We could do a lot worse.

From what i saw of Brentford under his guidance wouldn't complain, think we might miss MM ability and links within the game to get decent loan players which we will undoubtedly need the squad is going to be a bit threadbare come July.
Please not Mclaren we would be going back to the start of MM where so many fans didn't want him to start with the divisions within the fan base would soon appear and we would be back where we started.

Wjk- read that a few times on here, but have also heard contrasting views from a lad I know up Braintree way, so keeping an open mind on him, but your right, if he likes snow on the ball then it's a massive no thanks.

I can't see Evans paying compensation to any club for a new manager. Have always liked Warburton style of football, did well at Brentford better choice than MCclaren.
Although i would love us to take a chance with Frank Lampard, i think he would be great at bringing through the likes of Dozzell and Downs.

I think Warburton is a nobodys first choice but equally no one really objects to appointment.

The only name on the list of 'contenders' that isnpires is for me is Cook.

The Ipswich manager job is very different to most. With an owner who isn't seen in public, there is much more to do. MM has admitted the fact, as have previous managers.

Therefore, I'm not convinced the Cowleys would be the right choice... yet. I suspect the job will lend itself to an experienced manager but preferably one who plays attack minded football. Again, that doesn't appear at first glance to be the Cowleys.

Warburton would seem a sensible choice. Cowleys would be a punt. One which could pay off.

Glenn Hoddle? Ok hasn't managed a club for a while but he likes his teams to play with ball on the deck

Let's not forget that this owner surprised the tits off us with the eventually dire Keano appointment. He needs to be brave again. Another manager like McLaren with an up/down record is absolutely NOT what is needed right now. Our problems go deeper than simply a style of play. The terraces need some inspiration.

Not for me - as mentioned did well at Brentford but not so much since. It's gotta be Ipswich roots for me now, get Klug in now for the time being.
