Town to Wear Blackout Kit Against Derby
Tuesday, 11th Oct 2022 14:05

TWTD understands Town will wear their blackout third kit for the first time when they host Derby County live on Sky on Friday 21st October (KO 8pm).

The third strip, which was designed in conjunction with sponsor Ed Sheeran, has proved hugely popular since its release in August when more than 3,000 were sold in one day. Yesterday, after it went back on sale, fans purchased another 2,000.

In total more than 11,000 shirts have been sold, more than the combined total of home and away kits during the entire 2020/21 season.

The Blues last played a competitive home game in anything other their home kit in January 1979 against Orient in the FA Cup when they wore white and black, and prior to that, in January 1960, they wore red and white when they hosted then-non-league Peterborough United, also in the FA Cup. However, it could be the first time Town have been kitted out in anything other than their home strip in a league game at Portman Road.

The EFL allow clubs to wear a strip other than their regular home kit having sought permission, which the Blues were granted for the Rams' visit last week.

Derby seem likely to wear their maroon away shirt with both their home shirt having a large black area, as well as black shorts and socks, and their second strip black with a green trim.

The blackout shirt is currently sold out in all adult sizes other than small with the club set to announce details of a pre-order scheme for those still to get hold of one.

I'm pretty sure we played an home UEFA Cup match wearing our away kit.

Oh God. Is this April the First? A whole debate about Super Blues and we change the home kit colour. Is this the first of the Yankee Dollar talking?
Come on you...."blacks?"
If it wasn't farcical it'd be laughable.

I believe that ITFC played in red and white and Peterborough played in blue and white in our home F.A. Cup 3rd round game on 9th January 1960.
I was there and that is my memory.

I totally disagree with this. Ipswich should always play in blue at home.

Not a big deal as a one-off, and it should boost the coffers. Hardly worth arguing out of principle,... but some will.

Club have made two calls now which are not meeting with universal approval

referring to Town in commentary as the Superblues and this nonsense of playing a home match in anything other then Blue

We are the Super Blues. Why on earth would we play at home in anything else. Very odd

So long as we win,I couldn't care less what colour we wear.(apart from the disgusting yellow and green !)

Why?

It is not the first time we have played a competitive home game in a non-home kit, check your facts TWTD. I've witnessed a few in my 62 years, it used to be common in the FA Cup

I'm pretty sure I remember us playing in a white kit on a snow covered PR pitch once. Now that really was something to moan about

Does it matter? The very fact we launch two/three kits each year shows how commercially focused we are. It's nothing to do with the US owners, it's been happening for years. For those who have bought the kit, I'm sure they'd like to see the players wear it for once. As long as it doesn't have the effect the infamous grey Man Utd kit did in the 90s then I really don't mind.

78/79 we played Orient at home in our away kit (searchable on YouTube). The FA Cup was a competitive fixture in those days :-)

If we lose, we already know the reason why …

Hmmm, not sure I agree with this. Love the black shirt but think blue and white should always be worn at home. Could wear the black shirt at Charlton.

No, no and no…..if Ipswich Town are playing a home fixture at Portman Road we should be playing in our traditional blue shirts. Forget the cameras and selling of a black shirt.
