Town and Blackburn in Szmodics Talks Friday, 12th Jul 2024 17:39 TWTD understands Town are in talks with Blackburn Rovers regarding forward Sammie Szmodics.
The 28-year-old is a player the Blues have eyed in the last couple of windows and we understand a fee in the region of £6 million plus add-ons is under discussion. Personal terms are not expected to be an issue.
Born in Colchester, the four-times-capped Republic of Ireland international came through the youth ranks with the U’s before breaking into their first team in 2013 prior to a spell on loan in non-league with Braintree.
A move to Bristol City, where Blues CEO Mark Ashton was then in charge, followed in 2019, prior to a switch to Peterborough, initially on loan, before he joined Blackburn in August 2022.
Last season, the forward was top scorer in the Championship with 27 goals, leading to his first international call-ups.
By coincidence, like the Blues, Blackburn have a training camp in Austria next week.
Town are continuing to work on tying up the loose ends on the signings of Liam Delap and Jacob Greaves ahead of the trip.
Fees and personal terms are agreed for both but with some of the formalities relating to the moves still to be rubberstamped.

This is one I thought we would go for given his last season. As much as Philogene would have been a good signing, I think I would have preferred this one (cheaper too). Before I could see it being Philogene on the right wing and Omari playing on the left alongside Chappers. Now I can see Sammie playing that position (in rotation with Broady) and Omari going to the right wing

I hope we’re not being blinded by last seasons numbers. Previous 2 seasons he had 11 goals and 3 assists in 70 games. Similar to Chaplin although for me not quite as good. That said 6 million seems a reasonable price.

All I can say is"Get the job done" We have had far to much tooing and frooing with Philogene. What a saga that's been. Don't think in my memory I can remember anything going on so long. If he want's Villa then so be it. I suppose Villa can be considered a bigger club than Town and we have seen what Ollie Watkins is capable of so he may have made the better choice. As my Mum used to say when I lost a girlfriend " Never mind, plenty more fish in the sea" My reply was yeah, but the one's I get are washed up"

Oldfart71 I think the David Nugent saga dragged on and we didn’t get him. Just seen a comment from a Hull fan if that’s to be believed we have dodged a bullet on Philogene.

£6M? Bargain! Few years left in him yet. He knows this is his chance to shine in the PL, so see this working for all involved if it happens. While he's in Austria, maybe he can drop into Hull training & give Philogene a slap from us all & give him some smack talk on our behalf.

At £6m I think it’s a good deal but is the championship his ceiling or can KM pull him up another level. But saying that I wouldn’t be unhappy if we got him

Szmodics is a brilliant reader of the game. His brain is half a second ahead of 99% of Championship defenders. I could see him being brilliant for us in the no 10 role, with Hirst/Delap playing up top. He will want to show that he can do in the Prem what he's done in the Championship. Good price due to his age, bring it on.

Would be very pleased with this signing. Has always played well against us and is always keeping defenders on their toes.

For that price I think would be a good signing...always puts a shift in and a real busy bee obviously with the goals.

Curious there is no mention of this anywhere else that I can see, but Phil is always on the spot. A month or so back Everton were sniffing around him with £10-£15 mill being mentioned. If this is true - and I too hope it is - this could be a bargain!
