Will be interesting to see the comments after a few months, lots of soundbites as I've previously mentioned that echo those of Sir Alex but also Mr Keane. If all things are rosey great, but if they're not, is his 'direct' approach going to work at this level compared to lower?

http://www.eadt.co.uk/sport/knudsen-contract-talks-not-top-priority-for-hurst-1-

Genuine question, not a negative flounce before anyone jumps in with that, just keen to know how people feel about the approach so far..

I'm caught, on one hand, it's kind of breaking up the nicey nicey approach I think Mick had, but I also think it's risky as there are a lot of divas in football.

I think he needs to be careful. He could lose the dressing room very quickly if the players dont like his attitude towards the press about them. Saying things publicly isnt always the way. Give Mick his due he never really publicly criticised anyone. And nor should it be done.

As you say it's going to go one of two ways. For me personally, tone it down a notch, although with that said he might well have spoken to the squad and explained his philosophy etc and his comments might seem different with that context.

I wonder if he's pushing them deliberately to see if anyone breaks. He's clearly no mug. Interesting times ahead.

Truly impaired.

Micks recruitment policy was "no divas".
He saw dressing-room harmony as a top priority.
I think players in the squad that PH has inherited won't throw a hissy-fit if they're not selected. They will ask PH what they need to do to get in the team and then go about proving to PH they're good enough.

Don't believe a word I say. I'm only kidding. Or am I?

Agree it needs to find a balance.

If the players practise what they preach i.e being proper blokes with proper attitudes, players only getting in on merit etc, they should be fine with it.

They might say they overacheived with Mick but they can't say towards the end they were putting in good displays, so they can't complain if someone is coming in and looking to shake it up a bit and have a bit more ambition. Fitness standards for example seem a good start.

I'm not really all that fussed, and I think it's refreshing to hear him say that no player is guaranteed anything here, regardless of what went on before.

Something I am pretty sure of though, is he has made his mind up one way or the other on Kenlock or Knudsen, considering he's trying to bring a left back in. Very rarely do clubs hold 3 lefts backs to fight it out for one position, so I imagine if we did get Townsend, one of them 2 might be off.

I also think the fact he's not managed at this level and a bit OTT could put noses out of joint.

As always, results will eb the key thing, if he starts the season badly and has p155ed of the senior core of players he could be in a bit of trouble

He's equally had the hardest starting position of any Town manager, smallest budget, most bare-bones squad really coming in with huge holes still in the back-line with top players having been released, sold or in the middle of selling. I'd say he's got to be hard moving forward, it's the only way he's going to survive here.

If we have a bad first few months and the support turns Evans could just as quickly send him back out the door, his compensation isn't going to be anywhere near what the others had coming either.

I feel for the bloke, a huge step up and he's hardly been backed by the owner in terms of a substantial budget. We still haven't replaced players from over a year ago - Mick took a lot of the flack for the transfer window debacles but it's really the people at the top who keep failing us. We need a center half, and fast. We will need to replace Waghorn if we are selling with another proven Championship striker, but the longest this goes on the the chance of a Leon Best scenario increases again.

Paul Hurst is going to have to deliver big time to survive.

I'd say Mick had a harder starting position, a team completey demoralised, lacking quality, guile and direction, whilst having to hit the ground running ASAP as we were ten points from safety.

He really hasn't had the hardest start of any Town manager. Even saying that is doing Mick a massive disservice.

That's twice you've pretended that's the case. Have you only been supporting us for 5 mins or do you not remember us not owning enough players to make a team, and having more loans than could actually play when Jewell left?

The opposite couldn't be truer, and that's in no way a dig at Hurst but Mick has left him the best possible start after a departure.

To be fair he has a point,
I'm my opinion, although we were struggling badly when Mick came in, the supporters seemed to have been together and there wasn't really a refit between supporters and club. This time around tough I think Mick has inadvertently caused a big hole which is going to take time to turnaround.

If hurst isn't able to turn the fortunes around quickly, it could end up a horrible place to manage. I think it's safe to say, there's a lot of loyal town folk how have passed on, and there's a minority that's growing full of younger generation supporters who won't accept budget restraints, they just want promotion or other forms of success. Sadly this is the modern football world.

Player wise, although true Mick inherited a bad team, he's left an unbalanced one for Hurst, we've lost I think 5 players from last season? excl webster and have 1 experienced CB left, No real idea how the likes of Huws and Bishop are going to get on injury wise too.

I think the timing of mick coming in was harder, afterall we were bottom 3 and chasing the rest. But squad wise and supporters.. I agree with the OP on this one, I think Hurst has it harder but not on the field, if that make sense.

Player wise, comparison to worth with, Mick inherited the likes of Henderson, Edwards, Chambers, Higginbotham, Cresswell, Wellens N'Daw Reo-Coker, Martin, Murphy, Campbell Smith Scotland. Nothing fancy, yet on the face of it, more organisation and you can understand why we ended up staying up, as they were all experienced players, who just were misran under Jewell.

Compare that to now, We don't have that experience, so it's definitely a bit toughter imo. But the timing of Mick coming in, makes it difficult to compare.

Hurst is just being in honest by saying we'll look at each other before looking at a new contract. Getting other players in is more of a priority.

Ah classic TWTD nastiness. I bet none of you lot would dare say any of this stuff to anyone's faces, you couldn't because you live online. Well unlike most of you lot I actually go to Town games and don't just talk about the Labour Party and Brexit on here all day, but lets go on pretending you actually watch football for a minute.

I do in fact remember the Jewell situation, and while that squad was pretty awful there, Mick was given the resources to sign Tabb, Didz, Stearman and so on. He already had Chambers, Cresswell and Murphy. Hurst has been forced to sign from the third division, while key players such as Webster are being sold.

If you think Mick, or should I say Evans, has left Hurst the best possible start you are simply deluded. But then again, this forum and it's regulars are wrong each and every year about every subject as according to you lot last pre-season we were fantastic and were going to deal really well, and the season before when we were nearly relegated. But lets pretend you lot actually follow the football.

No one's been nasty, they've all just disagreed with you. When you make a bold statement like that, you have to accept that people will challenge it.

Mick had to rely on loans and free transfers to dig us out of what felt like almost certain relegation, so I have no idea how you can think Mick had more resources than Hurst does.

Mick also left behind a squad that was probably quite short on quality, but have a high spirit and togetherness which can be built on. Jewell's team was a catastrophe all over the place.
