Greatest Rock Riff ... ever? 07:33 - Jul 2 with 5794 viewsroysboys

Had Planet Rock on this morning and Smoke on the Water came on. A little piece of genius. Could this be the greatest rock riff ever?

I wouldn't argue against you, but I would also suggest Back in Black as a contender.

AC/DC are, were the riff masters.

We have no village green, or a shop. It's very, very quiet. I can walk to the pub.

Welcome to Monday's 20 pager!

Zep and Hendrix are my faves.

Assumption is to make an ass out of you and me. Those who assume they know you, when they don't are just guessing. Those who assume and insist they know are daft and in denial. Those who assume, insist, and deny the truth are plain stupid. Those who assume, insist, deny the truth and tell YOU they know you (when they don't) have an IQ in the range of 35-49.

A great shout - but personally it's Sabbath's Hole in the Sky.

Not many suggestions so far, but let's not confine ourselves to the 1970's...

Indeed not. The best rock music was made in the 60s , and the best riff is probably Satisfaction.

Satisfaction riff is great and possibly second best behind You Really Got Me.
The 60's is THE decade for music.

I can't be the only person who thinks Smoke on the Water is a clunky, hackneyed piece of cheese? Utterly overlayed, I hate that riff!

How about You Really Got Me by the kinks, proper dirty little riff.

Or Layla by Eric Clapton (Derek and the Domino's)

Or Kashmir by Led Zep

I noticed this interview on the right of the YouTube display as I listened to that track, when you hear a great guitarist talk about another one it gives an extra credibility to veneration:

We went to see Yesterday, errr...Yesterday. It was very enjoyable , whilst a bit implausible.

The most implausible bit was the heroine (Lily James) being at Lime Street Station and planning to get a train home (to Lowestoft) via London.

The direct hourly Liverpool to norwich service would be a better option, and change at norwich for Lowestoft.

So you are suggesting a series of obscure chord progressions as the greatest rock riff? Sure you wouldn't like to swap that for, say, one of Erik Satie's Gymnopédies?

While Purple/Rainbow, AC/DC and Sabbath probably are the riff kings, a couple of other personal favouries:

It is a very daft thing to do and might damage an LP but if you have 'Black Betty' on 33rpm and you play it at 45rpm it unbalances the timing of that emphatic beat at the end of the riff to hilarious effect.

AC/DC - Down Payment Blues

Black Sabbath - Neon Knights

Cream - I feel Free

Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower
