Where to live in the UK? 13:59 - Jan 23 with 33507 viewsThisIsMyUsername

I've no idea where I would like to live once I graduate from university next summer with my degree in physiotherapy. I'll be 29 when I finish, and I'm completely disillusioned with this country.

I've not travelled much in the UK (the only major cities I've been to are London, Birmingham, and Leeds). I'm aware this will therefore sound quite ignorant, but is there anywhere in the UK which is really that 'nice'? Can't say I've been bowled over by anywhere I've been so far.

To give you an idea of what sort of place I like on a purely aesthetic level. The most recent city I visited was Vancouver, which I absolutely loved.

In terms of what I would want, the main criterion is somewhere with a large population therefore creating many social opportunities. But it also has to feel open and friendly, as well as being aesthetically pleasing.

Does anywhere like this even exist in this country or am I going to have to go overseas for the type of thing I am looking for? If so then my qualification should open doors.

I love Raffles.

I am signing off in Singapore. Hopefully some time there before flying home!

We are passing through Singapore airport en route to Melbourne in a few weeks.

Spent three days in Singapore on our way back from NZ in 2018. Sadly Raffles was shut for refurbishment.

Apparently that means we'll have to go back again.

Don’t go to Scotland. It’s fcking freezing and full of Scottish people.

If you’re in your 20s, London town is your friend.

Scotland's the big leagues.

London is for amateurs trying to make the grade. They end up living in another small town like Wandsworth or Hackney trying to get the attention of a scout.

I am amazed Brighton has not had a shout.....unless I missed it.
Equally you'll be 29 when you finish.....life can change a lot for lot of people around that time for a lot of reasons,so something right now that feels like a winner, may not be as attractive....I guess we all end up somewhere planned or not...make the most of wherever it is.

You're right, Brighton is a very good call.

It's over 20 years ago so not sure exactly what it's like now. But was seriously thinking about it before I met a Swedish girl and then it all became irrelevant.

Brighton has the sea which is a massive plus. I went for sea after the city and would highly recommend for the mind and the soul.

Brighton is over-rated though, IMVHO.

If you really are completely disillusioned then you know what to do. Were I a young man in your position I would do the same.

I think ending it all is a bit extreme .

Second Bath/Bristol. Shrewsbury’s nice. As is Chester, York, Merthyr Tydfil, Cheltenham, Edinburgh (I may be fibbing about one of those). Depends what interests y - just the feel of the place or the local area too, whether you want the attractions of a large city or a quieter place that’s quick to get out of for days out...

If you’ve no ties maybe try and go abroad, which is obviously what Chico was getting at. Maybe Vancouver. Full-time immigration might not be possible in a fairly common field, but you might be able to get a short-term placement of some sort.

Having lived in Ipswich, London and Oxford, I can say Oxford is a wonderful city - beautiful, great buildings, culture, restaurants, schools, hospitals etc and 46 mins from London.

Not cheap.

Big fan of Oxford too having lived there myself but I'd imagine if you are a young person moving there alone with no ties to the university (/universities) it might be a bit alienating. Could be wrong of course.

Cost is always the issue isn’t it? I had an ex in Oxford, and even with a decent job the sorts of places people can afford to live immediately post-degree are little different to any other place.

Go out & see the world for a couple of years! When you’re fed up of that, the UK will be far more appealing.

Generally, people who leave don't come back. Because most of the developed world has similar to offer and sometimes a whole lot more. You then look at the UK like any other country.

I wish everyone in the UK could have that opportunity for 6 months or more. I don't think Brexit would even have been much of a discussion.
