One thing that gets my goat and is really annoying ATM 14:08 - Mar 15 with 3614 viewsEly_Blue

We are in unprecedented times globally outside of wartime, countries are in lockdown etc.
And I appreciate that like @55holes everyone has an opinion.

What I wish is that the media, tv news stations, newspapers, tv “celebrities” and presenters would stop trying to police points score, this is not some sort of election campaign or opportunity for police points scoring, this is a case and time for everyone to show unity, not for self promotion or the opportunity in 6 months time to say “I was right, I told you so”

I wish that these people would put aside their personal opinions And get behind the message coming from governments that are backed by medical and scientific facts and use their energies to report the facts and ensure that everyone is following the governments advice.

Anyone who thinks that government has a reason to not have their people at the heart of what they are doing needs to seriously give their head a wobble.

And before I get slated for “but each country is doing something different to the rest” then just think about how 2 different people (countries in this instance) deal with a situation, each countries set of circumstances is difference to the next one so there isn’t a one size fits all approach from one country to the next

Never mind that, we've got to hear what Rooney has to say:

https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/51896488

He's also wrong. Scotland v Wales rugby and the F1 were called off the same day and the tennis and golf (international tour events too) were called off only the day before. Sorry for the inconvenience, Wayne.

(Agree with your post 100% BTW)

What an obnoxious idiot, surely like any other employee he has a choice (as do his employers and not the authorities) as to whether he feels safe to go to work or not?

Broadly agree with that apart from maybe the 'unprecedented' in your opening sentence. We have had the AIDS epidemic, SARS, Ebola, MERS, chicken flu and countless famines, floods, nuclear accidents plus volcanic eruptions that also have a similar global impact. We will probably suffer climate change effects that will be more profound still.

But you are right, almost all media (including social media) have done a very shoddy job. Scientists have been misquoted and misrepresented, journalists have not listened soberly to the advice of governments and sensible debate has been stifled as a result. Personal opinion is still important and every death is an individual as well as a statistic, collective action will get results but the best collective action will arise from an open, fully functioning society.

bang on.

It's pissing me off at how people are staying home from work etc with no symptoms and no need at all, which is not what's advised. If it's a whole company, sure, but my girlfriend has a college teacher who has just decided to stay home for a week because she's scared of getting it!

Also, the panic buying! People are buying food for a month, it seems, when they won't be laid up that long even if they get the pissing disease.

All people need to do is try and reduce the risk, and carry on as usual. Wash your hands whenever you come into contact with public surfaces, when you get home etc. It's likely that the majority of us get the virus at some point, so let's just try and protect who we can without totally freaking out, shall we?

I totally agree. whatever your opinion on this, there are things we need to do in certain circumstances. At all other times we stay aware but don't panic.
Jeez, if we'd been like this during the IRA bombing campaign the country would have been paralysed for a decade or more! Poor example I know, but the human mindset appears to have changed over the past generation.

Sorry I think what I mean by unprecedented is how this is affecting the whole globe at the same point in time and just how quickly and easily this is spread, unlike things such as HIV/AIDS and Ebola.

Floods and famine are confined to areas at one time, this is a global problem that is affecting almost every country and could see major changes in the way we operate in the future.

Agreed. The senior Swedish immunologist has repeated his belief that Britain and Sweden have been basically the same approach and that it the right one, driven by a respect for science. Sweden has a socialist government. Across the straits, the right-wing Danish government has taken a very different approach, with a nationalist response. (Yesterday there was even a call for the Danish queen to abdicate, as though her failure to act like Vera Lynn or the Queen Mother picking her way through blitz rubble was evidence she's no longer fit to rule.)

There is public debate but then there is harmful “misinformation”

I’ll give you the perfect example, my 75 year old mother was telling me yesterday evening that she wasn’t going to go out for 4 months from today because that’s what they had said on the radio.

Hardly the truth now is it and only a mild case of not the whole truth being told, you can see how this will affect the message that is try to be spread by our government

Ah well, the patterns of famines and floods are being increasingly dictated by adverse weather and now have wider effects than they had in the past. Also consider the increasing global spread of new media so that major events that took weeks to get into the newspapers before the invention of the telegraph now appear within the hour. Not forgetting the competitive nature of the practice and of human beings in general that ramps up the level of response and hyperbole to make it difficult to compare tragedies in Victorian times with those happening now. Photography and film have made our cognisance of suffering more vivid too, censorship has numbed the full effect, celebrity hubris can make us less sensitive to 'ordinary' people we live alongside and so on.

Again I agree with your conclusion, there is a vital political result that can come out of this particular pandemic if a coherent global response is effective (and democratic). And if there is not then we go into the next crisis poorer and weaker.

Our government's response almost feels like UK is the control sample in a worldwide experiment. It will turn out to be either genius or catastrophic. I'm not predicting either way and it is a completely non-partisan view in terms of politics.

The Italian health system is advanced as the UK and has acute bed capacity of around 32 per 10K of population whilst the UK has around 24 to 25 per 10K of population. The Italian health system is treating people in industial buildings and tents and making choices on rationing ventilators to those most likey to survive because they can not actually buy ventilators at the moment. The Italian health system can not cope and people are dying because of choices that have to be made. People that would survive if the system was able to cope. Look at the death rate in Countries where they are coping at the moment (this includes UK and Germany). Way below Italy. Why is this? It is not because Italian medicine is worse than UK. It is because they can not cope with the volume of sick people. The same will happen with UK if the peak follows Italy and the current policies will ensure it does. The UK and Sweden are looking for a natural peak and increased community immunity. The Uk are doing this with 20-25% less bed capacity and when it is known that there is a shortage of ventilators and other essential drugs etc. The UK are doing this without social isolation which will mean the peak will be more dramatic and the pressure on health services will be higher, there will be more health staff sick at any one time and choices will become even more limitted will will mean more people will die than if the peak was less steep. Yes, social isolation does not mean the virus goes away and eventually all Countries will have to face the same number of cases whatever their strategy is. But, by spreading it out the health services will be better able to treat people and save lives. The UK and Sweden is a theorecticasl approach to dealing with pandemic that doesn't see statistics as people. Every time we see 350 people died yesterday in Italy that is 350 families. Graphs and peak projections and 'references cases' 'contact cases' these are all people and their families. The WHO has experience on Pandemics and outbreaks in Asia and Africa. The UK and Sweden has absolutely no justification to be out of step with their advice.

I hope I'm proved wrong but from the evidence I have seen the government are either making a huge mistake or they are taking the cheap option. The curve will not flatten but will spike highly on a health service that has very little flex in it even before this hit.

There are 2 labs one in Canada and another in the Netherlands that have had independently of each other made breaks in possible treatments for this virus, but they need time to get this ready to make an impact. Our government should be doing all they can to buy this time, they are not and people will die because of it.
