Via my housemate who works in a Supermarket... 21:53 - Mar 16 with 20001 views | monytowbray | Until today I've been quite jokey about people stockpiling food and supplies. If you're trying to make sanitizer with vodka which is too weak to work then sorry, you're an idiot, you read another idiot online, your problem. But today I saw someone take literally all of the baby formula from our shelves (absolutely loads) and when a young mother holding her baby asked if she could.maybe have one or two the other told.her no. We cant behave like this. I'm not saying we should go to a system of rationing but if people keep on with this behaviour we will have riots. Very soon. How grim can we be. Don’t do this.

I have been to Kombucha but most people have gone back to calling it Cambodia now, you know...

Via my housemate who works in a Supermarket... on 22:30 - Mar 16 by jeera | That's one thing I keep meaning to buy, is bread flour. I still have some but it's been kicking about for a while. Cheap to buy and great to make your own bread at home. I can't speak for your model, but my machine doesn't cut it the way hand made does. |
The flour is all gone too. Not sure why as people thick enough to panic buy are likely unable to make bread.

This is what's pissing me off. The stuff that usually sits there that the average punter doesn't buy, the hoards are suddenly grabbing; the lentils, the grains, the flours... Like half of them would know what to do with any of it. Put it back and stick to your tins and frozen pizzas, and leave the other stuff for those who appreciate it. You already know that in 5 years time these people will be emptying their cupboards, staring at items that are barely recognisable to them, and binning it.

Via my housemate who works in a Supermarket... on 22:38 - Mar 16 by StokieBlue | It's been a bit odd in London, people are WFH so seems empty but then on the weekend everywhere was rammed - parks, shops, restaurants, pubs etc. Did you see that JC is going to ignore the government advice for over 70's to isolate? SB |
A true hero! Honestly this is a blessing in disguise for Labour. The press would have buried them forever if they were in power now. They’d not even be close to picking up the pieces when this hit. Socialist principles would have been destroyed. It’s odd the man we were told would ruin this nation is now front of the queue protecting the very people who rejected him. I hope a few people start to see the system we’ve created for what it really is. I have many a venue owner and landlord on my FB right now rightly going ballistic.

Via my housemate who works in a Supermarket... on 22:41 - Mar 16 by jeera | Sounds obvious I know, but do check some reviews or get a recommendation. There's not much wrong with mine as in it does what it says, but I'm not a fan of white bread and the granary mix comes out too heavy. (I don't mean I buy ready-made mixes - I don't), and I find it pays to add a little white flour to lighten it a bit. But there's other things to consider, like removing the paddles before the baking process, so if you set it up before bed, the next morning you have bread with holes in the bottom. I have used it many times to make chapati dough though, which I then would roll into balls and freeze for convenience. Also handy for apple sauce. Mixed results with jams. Those are only my experiences and there's probably superior efforts out there now. |
I use a Panasonic breadmaker, on my 3rd as they get a lot of use. My favourite is a mix of 75% wholemeal flour and 25% rye. It's a bit solid, but it makes amazing toast by day 2. And fresh, still warm, it is great with crunchy peanut butter.

Eh? Surely as an influential figure he should be setting an example and following the government advice for the over 70s? You are saying that's people should follow the advice and isolate as required and determined by the research unless it's someone you support and then ignoring the science makes you a hero. What a bizarre position. SB

Some of your posts on CV have been a little ott, but I sense that is down to your anxiety at a worrying time, rather than some agenda (as some seem to think). Dont beat yourself up and I'd defo suggest turning the news off and trying to chill out at the moment. You can't change govt policy, but you can try and do what is in your best interests. And 24/7 following the developments wont be good for anyone's mental health atm. |
I’m glad someone reads what I post at face value. Yeah I’ve calmed down a bit today. Spent most of it in the living room working with one of my housemates and the fact we’ve pulled our finger out our arse somewhat is reassuring. A lot more to do but I think with the right public pressure we can get there.

See, this is it. The bread from a machine is great whilst it's still warm and fresh from baking, so if you've ideally timed it so it's ready as your home made soup has simmered and ready for the bowl... And the cartoon pretty birds are sitting on your country cottage window sill sweetly singing whilst you dish up. But the reality is more that once the loaf has cooled it's a bit stodgy, then when it's cold it's only fit for toast. The next day its only realistic use is a door stop or burglar deterrent. That's not the idea is it. By hand you do get a lighter loaf. God I'm more dull than I even realised. [Post edited 16 Mar 2020 22:58]

No, it's your flex which is weird. Much as I like Corbz, and he's my MP, do you really want him to put himself at greater risk by not self-isolating as has been advised? Whether you think he's some kind of superhero or not, he's human. In an at-risk category.

Don't ever put it in plastic!!! I keep it uncovered. Day one it is fresh and warm and wonderful. Day two it makes great sandwiches or good toast. Day 3 it makes great toast. It never lasts longer than 3 days.

I’d imagine he’ll get a ride and precautions would be took. Old people are still allowed to leave the house for essential things. This to me seems exactly that.

I think he's in a bit of a lose/lose situation. Really he needs to set an example though. If he's ignoring it then suddenly what seemed an obligation for pensioners seems like a choice and most people tend to believe bad things won't happen to them.

He’s quickly popping out to give Johnson a what for and then popping home. I’d expect precautions will be taken in his transportation and time with Johnson.

Oh no I wouldn't expect any fresh bread to go beyond day 2 maximum, I just don't think it should be suitable as weapon. Storage; I usually wrap it in a clean tea towel, no plastic. I might try your rye idea though as that's something I haven't done. I shall let you know in due course!

The advice is likely to be that from the weekend the over 70's shouldn't be going out even for essential things and should isolate for 12 weeks. He has said he is going to ignore that advice when it's issued. By your logic anyone who can get a ride or take what they consider good precautions can just ignore the advice. You are the one putting a "weird flex" on things this. I don't think we will agree so I'll leave it there. SB

So you’ve gone to listening to the government to making your own assumptions? There’s the issue so many on here have said, no one’s really been told WTF to do. I think if you have an issue with it perhaps take it up with Jeremy himself? I’ve been isolated for days mate.

Went in 5 or 6 shops that sell loo rolls over the last few days and found nothing. Got up early to go in the big Sainsbury's at 8am today and managed to get one of the last few packs. No eggs (come on chickens, we're all in this together) or hand sanitiser. While I was there some t@at was arguing with staff about whether he had 5 items or less or not. Some people are mental and selfish.

It's when I read about the children's stuff I get bothered the most. What kind of piece of sh1t buys all the Calpol, or milk formula, that kind of thing? They need stopping at the till, being told in no uncertain terms and chucking out. There' ll be some young mum upset because her child's ill and nothing left to buy to help out. Would washable cloth nappies be a viable alternative right now? I know someone Colchester way who sells them? Dunno why I felt the need to clarify they can be washed. I imagine that’s a basic built in requirement.
