Via my housemate who works in a Supermarket... 21:53 - Mar 16 with 19956 views | monytowbray | Until today I've been quite jokey about people stockpiling food and supplies. If you're trying to make sanitizer with vodka which is too weak to work then sorry, you're an idiot, you read another idiot online, your problem. But today I saw someone take literally all of the baby formula from our shelves (absolutely loads) and when a young mother holding her baby asked if she could.maybe have one or two the other told.her no. We cant behave like this. I'm not saying we should go to a system of rationing but if people keep on with this behaviour we will have riots. Very soon. How grim can we be. Don’t do this.

Via my housemate who works in a Supermarket... on 21:01 - Mar 17 by WicklowBlue | My neighbour sent us pics of a cupboard full of bog roll and bleach and told us she was buying a chest freezer to stockpile more. This all just causes more problems for the more vulnerable in society and is just simply selfish! Over here the shops now have social distancing tape at check outs to keep customers 6 feet apart and Tesco have signs up saying they will enforce quotas in the stores discretion. The supermarkets have also introduced special shopping hours for OAPs/vulnerable sections of society as has our Postal service. |
Then you'll know where to go when the crap hits the fan. Hopefully she'll have posted in on FB too so when the day comes, her house will be like a teenager has advertised a free for all party and the hoards will descend. Stupid woman, why boast that way?

Via my housemate who works in a Supermarket... on 21:02 - Mar 17 by jeera | Thing is, although naturally people realise (I think!) that more stock will arrive, the concern will be whether they can access it. If they're isolated at home with no deliveries available for weeks, then what? I'm hearing tonight a young manager in a local Co-op smugly announcing that customers will only be allowed 2 of any item from tomorrow. Well that's a bit bloody late. That horse has not only bolted, but has started a whole new life and family of its own luv, and has its barn packed to the rafters already. I said to her that there's no flour on the shelf and her immediate reply was, "Well you're only allowed two". I had to then repeat my first sentence. |
"Thing is, although naturally people realise (I think!) that more stock will arrive, the concern will be whether they can access it. If they're isolated at home with no deliveries available for weeks, then what?" Yep, it's that that's the thing. And good as neighbours might be, it's one thing to ask them if they could. pick up a few bits & pieces but you really wouldn't want to ask them to do a whole weekly or fortnightly shop when they're working ft & have young kids as well.

People like that need to hang. Sorry if your neighbour is a nice enough sort! I'm just going to the shop and getting what I need for the next day or two, nothing more. If people could be a lot more sensible then we could all chill out a bit more. Start clearing out your own cupboards before going raiding others'. Guess these sorts were the spivs during wartime. Arseholes. Anyway, some good measures by the Irish govt. there.

Via my housemate who works in a Supermarket... on 21:01 - Mar 17 by BanksterDebtSlave | Not a chance... the Suma lorry delivered 90 more yesterday....although they might not all be for me. The original 45 (now 43) are staying though! Beautiful day for working outside again today good sir...finally was able to cut grass on heavy clay....first of many to come all being well. |
You are Coventry City . Lovely day out at work though. Secured 2 weeks worth of gardening today far, far away from anyone, so that plus some regulars who basically have no direct contact mean i should be able to function for a while. Been grass cutting for about a week. Love that smell. Keep safe Bankster. The countries gardens depend on it
| We have no village green, or a shop.
It's very, very quiet.
I can walk to the pub. |

What do you need? My local pharmacy has a decent supply of calpol. We have a massive Asda nearby that gets restocked at night normally (I know this from pushing Seb round there when he was a newborn that wouldn’t sleep, so would go there to do some shopping in the middle of the night). If you need anything give me a shout. I am more than happy to post something down.

Wouldn't much like the output of a first-time baker using regular flour in error. I'm planning a bit of a shop in about 10 day's time. Hopefully the panic will have reduced, and the idiots will have run out of money.

It takes time to get bread making right, and I think I am still on the path rather than at the destination. But you have to start somewhere, sometime. If the pandemic spurs even a few hundred to get going on baking their own bread, scones, rock cakes and so on from scratch, and using ingredients with a minimum of strange additives then at least one good thing will have come out of all this. Yeah this is what I've pretty much come around to thinking. I've got chapati flour and, to be honest, going without bread for a few weeks wouldn't do me any harm. I could do with losing a bit of weight.

Sourdough is the way to go. Dead easy and you don't need to worry about an ongoing supply of viable dry yeast. You can get a starter going with nothing but flour and water, although my latest (3 months old now) had a splash of milk and honey at the start. Then I use 85% white, 15% wholemeal, 63% hydration - autolyse 1hr - work in 0.5% salt, fold every half hour or so for three hours or so, transfer to tins (I prefer a more sandwich-friendly format) leave to rise and bake for 30mins at 210C in a fan oven. Oh hang on, I couldn't get any flour last time I went to Sainsburys, so why the fcuk am I encouraging others to bake!

Good grief that sounds complicated. Basically all I do is mix flour, butter and salt together. Then I add too much water. Then I smack the gloopy morass around for way longer than the recommended time. Then I start punching it. I have yet to get to the stage where I push it into a corner of the kitchen and kick the sh!t out of it but I have a feeling that this pandemic and its effect on the TWTD forum is going to get us over the line on that one. Anyway, once all of that is done sometimes I don't even bother to prove and bake it. Goes straight onto the bird table rather than waiting until it goes mouldy as usual. Saving electricity, saving the Planet, bigging up the wildlife. #Breadstinxion_Rebellion.

Wish people wouldn't keep promoting rapeseed or its oil, it's horrible, and planted as it tends to be as a monoculture, is environmentally damaging.

It is British, less airmiles than Olive oil, higher smoke capacity so better than olive oil for cooking, lovely colour when added to lard for cooking roast potatoes, Bees gather the pollen for honey, yeah all good.

And it doesn't deprive orang utans of habitat like palm oil does. But we have to take Ryorry's point about the monoculture. Rapeseed as one of a number of oil crops - Linseed (although I think that comes with a well known allergy), Saffron, that other one that Joanna Lumley plays, corn, walnut... Actually think about a massive expansion of walnut woodland. Copses all over the place. Takes a while to get going I think.

Via my housemate who works in a Supermarket... on 13:56 - Mar 18 with 3356 views | TJS | I have now set aside about 2 weeks emergency food supplies at home which I am not going to touch unless I am forced to self-isolate. From now on I am just going to buy what I normally buy once a week without adding any more to my emergency supply. This is what everyone should do but sadly I think a lot of people are going to be panic buying every single week and ending up with months of food piling up at home. Another stupid habit that seems to be emerging is people popping into the shops every single day to try and get bits they couldn't get yesterday which is not helping with reducing unneccesary journeys.
