'Next' reopening 07:53 - Apr 29 with 2589 views | uefacup81 | There was a chap on BBC Breakfast this morning saying that Next are looking to start reopening stores, starting with their out-of-town stores. With this swathe of stores now talking about reopening, have I missed something? I've not heard any talk about the 'essential' list having been updated, so are these places ignoring the restrictions and just striking out on their own? EDIT - I misunderstood the piece, it's being planned once the lockdown is lifted. I still think the broader issue of some places reopening (essential or not) is worthy of discussion [Post edited 29 Apr 2020 11:40]

Yes, but as we all know the Conservative party have a long and proud tradition of never kowtowing to multi-million(and billion) pound companies in favour of the greater good. [Post edited 29 Apr 2020 10:17]

Even The Sun has managed to.... on 09:47 - Apr 29 by Bloots | ….report this story accurately! They aren't opening. The essential list hasn't been updated. They aren't ignoring restrictions. They aren't striking out on their own. I expect everyone will ignore the actual facts though and still pile onto this thread. People are funny. |
Apologies - I wasn't paying 100% attention to the report at the time. I've seen the article myself now: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-52468008 I still stand by my broader point, though. B&Q have already reopened, and the likes of Greggs and certain other high street retailers/eateries have also started talking about opening despite the lockdown. If this sets a trend, this will get worse before it gets better. You don't need a steak bake, 20 chicken McNuggets, or to redecorate your house to get you through this. Yes it's boring, but just sit tight, complete Netflix, and wait for this all to blow over. [Post edited 29 Apr 2020 10:06]

There needs to be a balance between health and the economy..... on 09:11 - Apr 29 by Bloots | ….and by economy I don't mean multi million pound hedge funds and huge multinationals, before I get called capitalist scum, I'm talking about the millions of people employed in retail that are facing unemployment or all the sole traders that are going to lose their businesses. The country can't prop up the economy indefinitely. Not everyone can sit behind a computer and earn money to support themselves or their families. We need to find a balanced way to survive, financially and literally. Millions of people from all walks of life are going to suffer otherwise. |

Just checked and it is currently at r0.9. And even epidemiologists admit that the R0 value is an estimate and an imperfect one. It would be very bad if our lives were dictated to by such a small margin of movement.

Although for Greggs and B&Q they are allowed to open under the government guidelines. So you can't blame them for doing so, it is a question of whether the guidelines are strict enough or not.

All those new cases would have contracted the virus before the shops opened. Many more may have contracted the virus since the shops reopened but they won’t know it yet.

That is a fair point actually if Germany is only testing symptomatic people. Aren't they testing a lot more than just that though? SB | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Something goes wrong in my house, if B&Q aren’t open at all, how am I supposed to repair it? Yard fence gets knocked down, how do I repair that?

'Next' reopening on 11:07 - Apr 29 with 469 views | jeera | Far from my place to suggest it's a good idea to reopen, from their point of view they will be sitting on an entire season's stock. It's fine to sit there and say people can purchase clothing from supermarkets but the owners of the clothing shops/chains, might be asking you what they should do with the tens of millions of pounds worth of gear they are paying to store with little means of shifting it other than via post. It's a dilemma and a half for these firms and the knock on consequences will be huge all the way along the line. There will be people starving in another country who would normally be relying on taking next years orders and getting them under way etc. [Post edited 29 Apr 2020 11:19]

A near neighbour had someone in laying flooring for them yesterday. If it can be done with social distancing fine by me.

Sure. Stuff needs doing still. I’ve done a fair bit in the back yard. B&Q click and collect was superb. They had a good system going at the Sunderland store.

…..a wider point about the need to ensure that people at all ends of the spectrum have jobs to go back to. Surprised you can't see that. And as I predicted people are still commenting on the news, even though it's not actually news.

Agreed. Essentials - yes, and the click and collect setup should suffice for when you need stuff in an emergency. Regretfully I can't imagine that the hoardes who descended on the B&Q in Great Yarmouth, so much so as to necessitate police attendance, all had pressing DIY emergencies.

We need to come out of lockdown, partly because we can't afford a prolonged lockdown but it needs to be done in a measured way. Opening more shops, especially as most retailers & customers seem to have worked out how to practice social distancing, is a sensible way to start.

Screwfix etc are open- I guess the point is that DIY places are permitted due to the need for repairs and maintenance. However, the bulk of their trade is going to be paint and growbags I suspect...

I am not sure what shops you have seen- but my experience is that people cant manage distancing when they have an aisle each in the coop let alone something less essential...

I've only been to the shops twice since lockdown, once to the bakers and once to my local co-op. Both visits were very short, apart from the wait to get in, but social distancing was very well observed. I reckon it's a cultural thing, East Anglian folk are renowned for their solid sense, but I think you are more towards pirate country.
