I agree entirely.

I just feel that when they're willing to smile for the cameras every time there's a slight development, they're either a bit dense, or know fully they they're being exploited but don't care.

Just let them be, there really is no benefit to you getting so wound up about it.

They've done a good thing, they have been rewarded (as campaigned for by the public) and they are happy.

Lets be happy for them.

It's not so much the broader COVID-19 situation. More that the Government have an uncanny knack of letting something else hog the front pages (knighthoods, medical staff breaching lockdown, teachers etc.,) whenever something mildly embarrassing would otherwise feature (deaths, criticism from medical advisors...)

Who wants yesterday's papers?

Front page headlines irrelevant as long as due diligence is followed by the people employed to ensure we follow the correct checks and balances in examining what happened, when ,why and how etc.

A minister fathering an illegitimate child maybe easily knocked from public consciousness, covid19 won't even if knocked off the front pages for a week. Even then it's not Joe Publics job to hold anyone to account until next election. That's the job of SKS / The Opposition Parties, National Audit Office, House of Lords etc.I

But hey I'm an idealist...

Sir Captain Tom is a hero - that's my view.

I suppose the thinking behind this is that if you associate yourself with heroes then that makes you a hero too.

It does smell a bit of "Look over there, a squirrel"

It will enable boris to make his opening statement about Sir Tom, in the (vain) hope that he'll thus dictate what PMQs will come his way.

He'll still be left floundering though. Apart from anything else, he'll open up NHS funding as a topic.

Word is that Boris isn't doing PMQ's today. Sending a Toadie in his place.

Indeed, rather like the eleven VCs awarded to the Rorke's Drift defenders. While I'm sure some of them were well earned, the intention was to deflect attention from the cataclysmic debacle of Isandhlwana earlier that day.
The posthumous VC was only started in 1905, among the first recipients in 1907 were Lts Melvill and Coghill who were killed whilst saving the colours from Isandhlwana. .

Disagree. As I said when it was first mentioned, I'd much rather this chap got one than many many of the others.

I also don't think people are going to forget what the government have done because of this one story.

Nice straw manning. My post was very clear that this is part of a wider strategy to control the news, especially at difficult times. It's not just this one story that will make people forget.

Sorry, wasn't deliberately straw manning. i don't think this - or other such stories - will distract from the rubbishness of this government.

The thread is belittling the idea of Tom Moore getting a knighthood, I'm merely listing why I think it's a good thing.

I bet Bloots will downarrow this.

Well, there are three possibilities:

1) They're a bit thick
2) They know what's going on, but "ooh, shiny baubles"
3) They're happy to help make the Government look slightly less incompetent

Or 4 captain Tom just wanted to raise some dosh and help. It's just grown legs woingvto his age. And why not let him have his moment. He deserves it
