Who was our most ‘natural goal scorer’ over years? on 08:33 - Jul 12 by PJH
For a period of about 18 months Alan Brazil with a one on one with the keeper was almost as certain a goal as a John Wark penalty so Brazil was a great natural goalscorer for us.
Like your old man Ray Crawford always gets my vote for our best ever centre forward and by implication best ever goal scorer although he would almost certainly not have got so many without the rebounds from Ted Phillips shots off the keeper or woodwork.
THE best goalscorer that I have ever seen play was Jimmy Greaves.

With you on Jimmy Greaves. What a player. Lineker and Owen would be up there with him, but Greaves was the best ever. World class.

Brazil. I remember watching him score 5 against Southampton and leaving the ground some people were talking about what a decent game Keegan had had; that's how much people took took Brazil's ability to stick the ball in the net for granted.

ray crawford scored hat-tricks in the top league in england, the top league in europe, the f.a. cup and the league cup. the towns all time record scorer . played half the games warky played. not the main penalty taker. ted phillips scored more goals in a season than any other town player. what a partnership. all in all from my first game at portman road like pjh i have seen great things, what even you 45 year olds and under can only dream off
forensic experts say footers and spruces fingerprints were not found at the scene after the weekends rows

You could add that the veteran Ray Crawford was just as deadly on his return in McGarry's promotion team.... not to mention in his dotage with Colchester.
Far, far and away the best goalscorer Town have ever had by a country mile, probably the best ever player too.... and quite possibly the 'best natural goalscorer' which is where things depend on personal choice and rosey hued memories.... hence the many candidates, some of which are bizarre ... I wouldnt say Reuser was even fit to lace Bobby Hunt's boots, let alone Ray Crawford's.
In my time, Johnno and Stewie. Nobody else even comes close. Any sniff around the box, either of those would be there and snaffle it. Either Johnno with pace or Stewie just seeing it before anyone else.
Criminal that Stewie never got a call up.

If you're spreaing the net further, then I would suggest that Robbie Fowler beats both Linekar and Owen in terms of being a natural goalscorer.
Owen was a decent finisher but it was his pace that set him apart early in his career, Linekar was a pure finisher but still in my opinion not at Fowler's standard.
Too young to remember Greaves, but family have always said he was clinical.
No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.
Paul Mason ought to get a mention, we didn't have a midfielder with his eye for goal for many years until Tommy Miller came along, quickly followed by Keith Andrew. Gone dry again, unless you count Grant Ward's debut hat-trick.

A slightly tongue in cheek suggestion, couldn't score goals out of nothing but for a few seasons he was a great finisher who rarely missed when presented with a decent opportunity to score (same with Mathie) he had a great understanding with Dozzell.

David Lowe.
Until his injury he was superb. I remember a BBC commentator comparing him favourably with Ian Wright and Mark Bright. After the injury really never got back close to that level.

Having seen them all since the mid 70s and if we are considering the most natural and instinctive goalscorer, it can only be Brazil for me. In terms of midfielders, no one has ever come close to Johnny Wark.

If we are recalling this era then it has to be Dalian Atkinson, a thread on 'the best natural goal scorer we let go of far too young' would easily be won by Dalian.
