Dog thefts 09:38 - Jul 29 with 17011 views | clive_baker | What's all this then that I'm hearing? The old dear is now more petrified someone's coming to steal the dog than she is of Covid. As for the old man, he's got the shot gun ready. Reports in their village of some people knocking on doors in the middle of the night, allegedly to see if there are dogs inside with a view to coming back for them. These people make me sick.

Dog thefts on 11:13 - Jul 29 with 4942 views | N2_Blue | The chalk mark thing is completely false and myth. People need to stop believing everything they read on social media. Seriously. We had this going round various neighbourhood sites in my area of west London a year ago to the point of people getting in a frenzy. They said it was travellers marking houses to target. It was completely debunked and now no one seems to mention it or worry anymore.

Hence, the tab on my browser which shows the content of <title>, shows "Dog thefts by clive_baker". Now I'm sure that plod aren't so inexperienced or daft these days as to take that literally, but I would hate to think that our former diminutive goalkeeper is going to get a visit from the hound-rustling squad. By the way, I think that anyone who parts a dog from their legitimate human best friend ought to be eaten by wolves.

Dog thefts on 10:41 - Jul 29 by LankHenners | Number's probably gone up a bit since that was posted. I know for a fact the stealing of multiple dogs from the same kennels happened after that. The chalk thing is very much real but the issue is that, from what I gather, kids are going round putting chalk marks outside people's houses as a joke which obviously makes it look worse than it is. |
the chalk thing is not real. It's complete BS.

Maybe Mr Baker has something he'd like to admit? Come on, Clive....

evidence of that? Our police liaison officer for neighbourhood watch have advised there has not been one burglary attributed to chalk markings and made it clear this was a word of mouth rumour and not something that had any substance behind it. If you have evidence otherwise I'd like to go back and highlight this with our neighbourhood watch

Highly organised, violent criminal gangs may be operating in your area. Be on the lookout for telltale signs... They're usually under 5 foot tall and brandish skipping ropes.

People in a neighbouring village reported an incident of it happening to the police who apparently indicated they'd had similar reports (which in fairness may have just been people saying they'd seen chalk markings). In truth, it could have been a coincidence as the police essentially agree that the chalk marking theory is being over-stated.

I've no knowledge of these things, but I'd like to see some evidence that it's actually a thing and not just made up.

In my parents village 3 people on the same road have reported markings over the course of the last week, and all 3 have dogs. Of course it could be chance, or kids messing around, or simply that they've been there ages and never inspected their gates for markings before, or paranoia. IMO there's absolutely no evidence to suggest it's linked to anything more sinister at this stage.

Dog thefts on 10:36 - Jul 29 by uefacup81 | Snazzy marketing. The kind of dogs that ten/twenty years ago would have simply been seen as either mongrels or, at best, an X/Y-cross have been given trendy names and price-tags to match. A cockapoo/labradoodle/puggle/schnoodle is simply a mongrel with a PR budget. [Post edited 29 Jul 2020 10:36]

Ask the police about it. All I know is that someone reported an incident of finding a chalk mark and then having a dog stolen. I don't know the specifics of it and as I said it may have been a coincidence (as there has been cases of kids going round putting chalk marks down to scare people) but I would hold fire on calling it totally untrue.

Dog thefts on 09:58 - Jul 29 by GeoffSentence | There have been dog thefts in Suffolk, but there has also been a lot of hysteria about it. My face book feed is currently clogged up with stuff about it. The same picture of the same two men and a van who might be selling dodgy fish or might be stealing dogs keeps popping up time and time again, though they are always acting suspiciously and not actually known to have nicked a dog. The number of posts about missing dogs has gone through the roof too, but almost always they are from far flung parts of the country. Aside from the dog kennels that was targetted and all the dogs stolen in one go, the only tangible thing that seems to be happening is people finding chalk marks on their walls. |
The same on my Facebook feed. A couple of weeks ago the police were called on a delivery driver around the corner from us. He was on his first day and was a bit lost and had knocked on a door asking where a particular house was but was accused of doing this as a ruse to check whether the people concerned had dogs. And the chalk marks thing keeps appearing, in one instance it was definitely birds' muck down the side of kerb. While there has obviously been an increase in thefts, which are truly awful for both the owners and the dogs themselves, it has turned into a bit of a moral panic. Also surprised we've not heard of anyone taking legal action having been erroneously identified as dog thieves and their photos plastered over social media.

Dog thefts on 10:44 - Jul 29 by Libero | Step sister works for the RSPCA, rest assured the dog rescue homes were overflowing before, during and after lockdown... They're just expensive as people consider them a fashion item, it's been that way for quite a few years. In reality you could just rehome a dog and it'd cost you peanuts, but then you can't say you've got your pooch-a-poo-cross-w@nker-dog. |

Get him down to Ipswich. I know during lockdown my step sister had to take a bunch of the animals home, it's possible a similar situation happened in Battersea? No idea, but the the idea that suddenly there are no homeless pet's is clearly absurd.

Dog thefts on 12:26 - Jul 29 with 4692 views | BlueBadger | I strongly suspect that most of the 'dog thieves' with 'accents' and white vans we're seeing around are actually Amazon drivers and people really need to stop flapping like an Ipswich goalkeeper faced with a cross.

There was a spate of gundog thefts from gardens in broad daylight 2-3 years ago in North Yorkshire, police put out warnings & news was also circulated by local vets. Also rumours that it was a racket organised by people driving a fish-for-sale van. Might have been coincidence but I was visited out of the blue by an unmarked white van flogging frozen fish at the time. The fish was in large blocks, too much for my freezer, so I said I'd ask amongst neighbours to see if they wanted to share. The driver didn't have business cards for me to contact them, but visited again, or another van this time with fishmonger type markings did, but didn't stop long enough for me to hail as I spotted him from a few hundred yards up the lane while I was out walking my (gun)dog. Anyone who steals dogs are utter scumbags.
