Dog thefts 09:38 - Jul 29 with 17008 views | clive_baker | What's all this then that I'm hearing? The old dear is now more petrified someone's coming to steal the dog than she is of Covid. As for the old man, he's got the shot gun ready. Reports in their village of some people knocking on doors in the middle of the night, allegedly to see if there are dogs inside with a view to coming back for them. These people make me sick.

Dog thefts on 10:54 - Jul 29 by Libero | Fine, stickers then. Hilarious that people think that this still happens really, isn't it? I remember my Nan used to bang on about "gypsies" doing similar. I love the idea that a couple of grifters go out for a hard day's work marking homes with chalk in preparation for their evil plans, only for it to p1ss down and their work to have gone for waste. Absurd. |
To be honest from the few dog thefts I'm actually aware of all have occured away from the house ie dog off the lead running off into the distance and someone grabs it. Not sure about the gypsy thing although as they will pinch anything it wouldn't surprise me.

Sounds like you've got some real valuable experience, you should drop the police an email with your intel. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Have you considered the possibility that the marking of those houses with dogs means they’re the ones to avoid where they want to carry out some house burglaries?

Dog thefts on 11:45 - Jul 29 by LankHenners | People in a neighbouring village reported an incident of it happening to the police who apparently indicated they'd had similar reports (which in fairness may have just been people saying they'd seen chalk markings). In truth, it could have been a coincidence as the police essentially agree that the chalk marking theory is being over-stated. |
yes the chalk markings exist, some can often be natural chalk deposits appearing and others that are man-made may have been done by broadband companies or other utilities workmen but it is not done by thieves targeting houses...it is a myth

I've never bought the chalk theory either. It is Facebook 'crack' for a lot of people though Just take a photo of the house on a phone and stay incognito rather than marking a property if that is what you really want to do.

As I've tried to point out based on first-hand experience of dealing with our neighbourhood police liaison. They get these rumours all over the country apparently, but that is all it is, and i'm sure if there was any truth in it the police would know. He said as far as they are aware no burglary investigation has ever been connected with chalk markings and the majority of the time there is a plausible reason for the chalk marking being there.

Dog thefts on 11:14 - Jul 29 by NthQldITFC | One unforeseen consequence of the way the forum works, is that the HTML <title> tag is constructed from concatenating the subject, ' by ', and the name of the author. Hence, the tab on my browser which shows the content of <title>, shows "Dog thefts by clive_baker". Now I'm sure that plod aren't so inexperienced or daft these days as to take that literally, but I would hate to think that our former diminutive goalkeeper is going to get a visit from the hound-rustling squad. By the way, I think that anyone who parts a dog from their legitimate human best friend ought to be eaten by wolves. |
That only happens if you use thread mode. If you use a modern mode, like table mode, no such confusion happens. I am sure that plod would be bright enough to use the most up to date and sensible viewing mode.

Note for would-be thieves:- do not follow EG's advice, since however much you may later try to delete aforementioned photos, they can be recovered by forensic experts and used in evidence against you * *knowledge acquired from watching 'Broadchurch', not from personal experience before anyone starts ..

Dog thefts on 11:36 - Jul 29 by footers | Highly organised, violent criminal gangs may be operating in your area. Be on the lookout for telltale signs... They're usually under 5 foot tall and brandish skipping ropes. |
That's why I never buy a property numbered 1-10 to avoid being burgled

when all goes back to normal those people will be getting rid! the kids like looking at pets on the pets at home site, the amount that say "he's got too big for the house" "we cant give him the attention"..... like they've become surprised a dog grows or needs walks twice a day

My favourite fad was the micro pig phase, where you had old dears going out and purchasing these cute tiny piglets thinking they were going to become house pets they could carry about in some handbag. They were also surprised to learn that even 'micro' pigs grow to the size of a large coffee table.
