Over 21 players.... 08:41 - Aug 10 with 7335 viewsitfcjoe

Sounds as though it is limited to players born on 31st December 1998 or earlier.....which leaves us with

Tomas Holy
Luke Chambers
James Wilson
Luke Woolfenden
Gwion Edwards
Cole Skuse
Kayden Jackson
James Norwood
Jon Nolan
Janoi Donacien
Harry Wright
Teddy Bishop
Alan Judge
Freddie Sears
Arsitote Nsiala
Kane Vincent-Young
Myles Kenlock
Emyr Huws
Aaron Drinan
Barry Cotter

So we have 20 players in the squad of 22, with room for 2 signings in the squad, realistically Cotter and Drinan will likely not be named in the squad if it can be helped.

Of the 20, think it is safe to assume that 17 of them earn above the limit, or at least very close to it.

17 multiplied by £113k is £1.92m.

I don't know where we stand on agent fees and the like, but realistically we have about £10k left in the wage budget for signings to cover basic plus bonuses, which may stretch to 2-3 players on pretty cheap terms.

Anyone we sell, or loan out, or pay up, will release a further £2k per week back into the wage budget.

Promotion this year is absolutely vital, we just simply will have to release nearly every player in the squad who doesn't take massively reduced terms. The idea of selling or getting rid of someone like Norwood now is just a total non starter because it just kills us.

I was just trying to be a little positive Herbivore.. we're lumped with him it seems.

There were several good performances last term.. but sadly all against lower opposition.

Do I have to write again about the 'T' word and how Lambert, his assistants, and the footballing structure set-up around him by Marcus looks to be horribly flawed?

Having sunk into the negative mire again... I do think KVY and perhaps the emergence of pace from Lanketser, El Mizouni or Dobra could be a game changer... BELIEVE!!!!

There were a handful of good performances, probably fewer than we managed even in our average to poor seasons under Mick to be honest. It was mostly rather abject stuff and played out in a really poor quality third division. Depressing times. I can't really see how Lambert takes us forward after nearly two years of failure and a poor recent record as a manager prior to that too.

The question isn’t do we have a squad capable of promotion but do we have a manager who can get the best out of them. He failed miserably last year.

Yes and no.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

Hard to tell with toungsters at the moment, assuming you say Downes and Dozzell have made it, I'd certainly have one of the 2 Ben's in that middle category, likely at the expense of McGavin and have that as the ones pushing to be in the squad but seen as first teamers.

The rest will fight it out with the U23s, and hopefully get a lucky break

Yes I watched McGavin closely at Col U in the club, while I thought he was neat and tidy, he didn't grab his chance or the game, and it was a little sideways.

Albeit thats only one game. Have you seen more of him? different view?

I'd say that is about right, maybe lacks a bit of mobility but a very good passer

I was an admirer of Owen Garvan. Hopefully the next Jim Magilton instead though

Especially when £5k a week is absolute chicken feed in the league above. Any half decent player at L1 level is going to get taken very quickly. This league is going to become a development league and reliant on the 'good nature' of Championship/PL clubs re loans very quickly - which is perhaps what they want.

It is very hard to predict all the possible results pf this salary cap, but I think that there is a very real risk that championship clubs can sign up players like Garbutt for only marginally more than a League salary with the intention of not playing them but loaning them to a League 1 team for around 80% of their salary. The costs would be minima to the Championship club, but you get the potential of having a player that might be good enough for you the next season, or does well in League and could command a fee from a Championship club in the future, There would appear to be minimal downside here for a Championship club to do this with a couple of players a year in the knowledge that realistically a club in League is prevented from offering higher wages as they have to balance the salary cap.

"I think that gone are the days of having a strong squad. It's going to move to having a strong starting XI, with a few back up players and the rest being young pro's fresh out of the Academy."

in a funny old way that is kind of the "Ipswich way"

This is where having a football DNA across the club is important

You want your academy players to slot straight into the system the first team plays

I know when McCarthy was here, the youth and reverse teams were playing a different style to the first team

Alcohol is the answer but I can't remember the question!
