Probably something to do with the title.
Yes there's no doubt it should be renamed sports person of the year but it's still funny. I remember of of the protesters on the street being interviewed about Tyson Fury being in the running for it and she said there is no way he should get an award for his personality...
It amazes me how many people think SPOTY is literally a personality award.
Further to this. Average footballer, Jordan Henderson winning sports writers player of the year, is apparently based upon personality as opposed to footballing skill.

Marcus Rashford won the '2020 BBC Sports Personality of the Year Expert Panel Award' - well deserved obviously, but I wonder why he wasn't he even on the shortlist for the main award, voted for by the public - something to do with timing maybe? I think he'd probably have won by a country mile if he'd been shortlisted.

Because it's an award for sporting achievement in the year 2020. Why can't people just accept that it's not actually about someone's personality, despite it being the title?
Pronouns: He/Him/His.
"Imagine being a heterosexual white male in Britain at this moment. How bad is that. Everything you say is racist, everything you say is homophobic. The Woke community have really f****d this country."

This one is never going to pass the Turing test.
Hamilton was the most worthy winner IMHO, unlike Liverpool who won the team trophy, other than do what any 1 team does every year what did they do that was exceptional, surely Exeter chiefs was a far greater achievement?

So it checks out, if he has a personality.
Jordan Henderson is an above average footballer.
He is a great exemplar of anti-racism in football.
He is a decent human being.
None of these, of course, mean that he is Sports Person (sic) of the Year. The writers' award is clearly totally different.
