I’d drop Chambers as captain and move him back into the centre of defence to prolong his career. He’s not dropped as captain as he’s a bad one, he’s very good but it’s time to freshen it up and pass on the responsibility to Downes. We need to give Downes every reason to stay here. Is it? We need to build a team around our best players and make them integral to our ambition. Losing Downes in my view would be a disaster. At the moment we have a lot of talent and no cohesion. Putting the building blocks in place starting with a natural leader, which Downes is in my opinion, is a sound starting point.

I see leadership, ownership and accountability as the main issues we have right now. We need to give Downes a reason to stay; that and the fact he’s a natural successor to Chambers. If Cook or the Cowleys came in and said, “Flynn, we want you to lead this team to promotion, sign a new deal and you can have a clause to leave if we don’t go up”, it might well persuade him to hang around. | |

Can't remember exact details, and not sure if ever publicly revealed so best not speculate too much - but was a falling out with Doig with regards to fitness regime where as a senior player he knew how to manage his body better and was able to hit all the numbers required of him I think | |
