You’re the new manager, first big decision you make is... 11:12 - Jan 26 with 3948 viewsKeaneish

I’d drop Chambers as captain and move him back into the centre of defence to prolong his career. He’s not dropped as captain as he’s a bad one, he’s very good but it’s time to freshen it up and pass on the responsibility to Downes. We need to give Downes every reason to stay here. He’s a natural leader and can learn from Chambers as vice.

Is it? We need to build a team around our best players and make them integral to our ambition. Losing Downes in my view would be a disaster. At the moment we have a lot of talent and no cohesion. Putting the building blocks in place starting with a natural leader, which Downes is in my opinion, is a sound starting point.

We need continuity and fresh leadership wouldn’t go amiss. Chambers, unfortunately for him has had to preside over some litter for years. New captain; new impetus.

Making Downes captain won't mean he'll be here for the long haul. He put a transfer request in over the summer and the second we get an offer from a bigger club he'll want to go again, understandably so. Captaincy is the least of our issues right now.

yes, didn't Hurst try and stamp his authority by metaphorically punching all the senior pros in the face?

I think it was mostly Bart and Knudsen, who reported back late as they were at the World Cup and Hurst basically said, they need to show that they are good enough etc.

Then a big falling out with Freddie Sears saw him dropped for a long time over them trying to throw their weight around

Not sure if there was a particularly big issue with Chambers and Skuse, but the issue was all the senior players were seeing the signings being made; and knew that these guys weren't capable of the 2nd tier football that was required

You’re correct. A £5 armband isn’t going to mean jack when someone offers the lad three or more times his salary. The only way we’ll keep him is by being in the top two in May.

It's 106 miles to Portman Road, we've got a full tank of gas, half a round of Port Salut, it's dark... and we're wearing blue tinted sunglasses.

I see leadership, ownership and accountability as the main issues we have right now. We need to give Downes a reason to stay; that and the fact he’s a natural successor to Chambers. If Cook or the Cowleys came in and said, “Flynn, we want you to lead this team to promotion, sign a new deal and you can have a clause to leave if we don’t go up”, it might well persuade him to hang around.

Can't see if. If a Prem club comes calling again he'll be off, even if we somehow manage to go up this season. I'm not sure a player who has half an eye on a big move is the best choice as captain. Our main issue currently isn't our captain, it's that we have a hopeless manager who can't coach, set up, or motivate his players.

Pin large posters around the training ground. Posters with large arrows pointed toward the opposition goalposts & saying Get the bloody ball in here..!!

It would be like turning down a job at Noma because you've been offered the chance to manage the KFC drive through at Cardinal Park.

R.E. the point about bringing in players who weren't capable at that level - by and large, they are still here, Edwards, Nolan, Jackson, Nsiala. I wonder if Chambers & other senior players still see them as inferior to the level needed.

WHo knows, I think it was more when you lose Waghorn, Garner, McGoldrick and Celina and replace them with Edwards, Jackson and Harrison you might begin to think, with years of Championship experience under belt that you might be in a bit of trouble

First thing I'd do is get Chambers onside, and get him back as the link between the management and players as Mick had him successfully.

Doesn't mean playing him every week, and he may end up as club captain and not playing as much - but managers either need to get their senior pros on board or ship them out

You can see that Chambers is not there at the moment, I thought it was because he knows change is coming and it won't be what he would like, which is to progress along with Skuse to be in charge.

Agree with this. He might not be the player he once was but he’s still the biggest ‘leader’ we have.

Who actually is our go-to vice captain these days? Assuming it’s not Skuse?

He doesn't want to be the manager now, he wants to lift a trophy at the end of the season and be promoted back into the 2nd tier and carry on playing

What was the falling out with Freddie about? I did wonder why he was dropped early on that season considering he was a better left winger than Edun, Graham or Roberts.

I survived Ipswich 0-0 Burton

Can't remember exact details, and not sure if ever publicly revealed so best not speculate too much - but was a falling out with Doig with regards to fitness regime where as a senior player he knew how to manage his body better and was able to hit all the numbers required of him I think

If you are walking in and stripping a popular captain as your very first decision, you might as well make it your last decision.

My first decision would sit Chambers(and maybe Skuse) down in the office and find out what has been going on, what they think the problems are, and how i want to work with them to lift the standards.

Stick with Chambers until ed of season. Whether he still has a role here next year is a debate that could go on forever. Certainly wouldn't be a starter for me next year.

Downes will leave in the summer. Can't blame him.
