As I've predicted for a very long time, the Loyalist (hard-line Unionists from Protestant areas) community have not responded well to "the Border in the Irish Sea".
Graffiti in Loyalist areas stating that Port workers are now targets.
This leaves us with either an unworkable agreement, or the threat of the resumption of acts of terrorism.
A gentle reminder, too, that the DUP (the Loyalist party) campaigned for Brexit. And propped up May's Government rather than work cross-party for a sensible solution.
I'm interested in Paz's solution to this problem.

I think that is inching closer to a united Ireland and the loyalists know that.
Unfortunately** they dont seem to realise that behaving like right eejits will only make it happen quicker
**unfortunately for them
I for one think the re-unification is long overdue
Unfortunately Keno, I fear the loyalist community are many years away from accepting a peaceful re-unification. And many this side of the border quite rightly fear what a re-unification with a unhappy loyalist community would bring

The DUP voting for Brexit just shows up what a bunch of shortsighted halfwits they are.
NI voted remain -55% I think.
The DUP tried to dismantle the GFA as it gives a legal basis to the principle of consent. Their hope was that Brexit would remove GFA. They know their time is up.
If there was a poll in the morning, it’s probable NI would vote to remain in the U.K. but that will be different even by the end of this decade.
A united Ireland is probable in the next 10-20 years. The bigots are stomping their feet.

The union is over really. There are plenty of countries on our doorstep that have coped with huge boundary changes in the recent past like Germany and Yugoslavia. We should grant Wales Scotland and NI referendums immediately and cope with whatever the results are including hopefully a free prosperous and independent England.
In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!

It’s interesting that our right wing politicians who wanted “sovereignty”, and an end to a union, so desperately are strongly opposed to it here.
I think N Ireland and Scotland will leave the UK. My biggest fear is that the Tories will always win elections in England as a result.

Pretty much agree with the sentiment but NI is a bit more complicated than that, unfortunately.

I'm not sure anyone (including Plaid Cymru) believes in the viability of a fully independent Wales. It would always involve payments from England.

Nobody who voted for Brexit can seriously oppose the dismantling of the Union. I think you’re right about Scotland and Norn Iron and there is a groundswell in Wales too. I have no solutions on the money side the defence side etc other than its vital that we remain the best of friends with our neighbours and help them as much as we can.

You can add London in as a city state as well, then all the bores and little Englander bigots can piss off to Surrey and leave us metropolitan elites in peace.

It was always said that the Protestants had the majority in NI, is that still the case?

Probably an even enough split at the moment.
The unionists had a comfortable majority when GFA was signed.
The thinking would be that the longer things go on after Brexit, the closer the ties between NI and the South and the more the demographic moves to a united Ireland.
And Biden. He’s Irish. It’s plssing the DUP off big time.

I've never quite got my head around that false equivalency argument that's such a favourite of Brexiteers. In the EU countries retain their sovereignty, whereas In the UK they don't. We've moved more slowly towards it through devolution, granted, but the stronger case for repression and preventing countries governing their own affairs would be against the UK not the EU.

Haha, that's my bigest worry about the union breaking up. It dooms those of us in England to be governed by the party of the rich, powerful and corrupt.
