Lambert's signings 08:28 - Feb 3 with 7421 views | Herbivore | Interesting article in the EDP today: https://www.eadt.co.uk/sport/ipswich-town/ipswich-town-signings-graded-7301402 A lot of people rate Lambert's transfer business as his main area of strength during his time here. When you look at how they've actually performed though they've largely been pretty toss. It's interesting that Elder and Emmanuel are now rated as two of the best full backs in the league and gunning for promotion with Hull, when both (in different ways) were deemed not good enough for us. Just further serves to highlight that the talent of the players really isn't the main issue here.

Lambert's signings on 09:59 - Feb 3 by BlueBadger | You've gone with the wrong target here Fishers, definitely should have run with the 'C' awarded inexplicably to Alan Judge who ' brought effort and desire to an Ipswich attack lacking both on the way to relegation'. Or with 'it speaks volumes that Wilson, a competent third division centre half is the best of all of them'. |
A competent third division centre half that a competent third division side had no further use for, lest we forget.

Lambert's signings on 09:31 - Feb 3 by Radlett_blue | Wilson was a 30+ lower league (which is were Town now are) journeyman, which was fine as cheap back-up. Unfortunately, our other options at CB were deemed worse, notably Toto, who kept making high profile errors so Wilson started half our league games last season. Bearing in mind Wilson was free & on low wages, he seems to have been elevated in status. |
It's not that Wilson's been 'elevated' it's just that the rest have been astonishingly poor, injured or both.

Lambert's signings on 11:05 - Feb 3 with 1052 views | monty_radio | Looking again at Andy Warren's list, you'd have to say that none has been an obvious success yet. Then again, looking at the number of players mentioned on this thread who went on to better things, I guess we understand why Warren's assessment is sadly correct.

Absolutely. The C for Judge is incredibly generous, unlike some of the others he's been fit and has played regularly enough, he just hasn't performed. Wilson has at least done fine when called upon, which in normal times would be a minimum expectation but under Lambert it makes him a rarity.

Lambert's signings on 09:43 - Feb 3 by TractorJack | The praise of Wilson says more about the standard of our CBs over the last 3 seasons. He can do the basics I just can't bear watching him kick it in to touch every time the ball comes near him. |

That's not a criticism of Wilson, and neither do I think it read like one. The pick of the bunch amongst Lambert's signings is an ageing journeyman discarded by a third division side that now leaves us in the dust. It's a criticism of Lambert and all the other dreck he's brought in.

Doesn't that rather depend on who is playing around him? I always find this approach to rating players a little bit baffling. Most sides challenging for promotion will have at least one player in their side who, in isolation, could be described as not being good enough for a side challenging for promotion and yet they find themselves in a side challenging for promotion, which means that they are good enough for a team challenging for promotion. It's all rather self-defeating.

If you're talking about squad players then of course and weaker players can look better in good teams. I still believe that he's not good enough on the ball to play regularly for a team challenging for top 2.

I doubt many people thought Luke Chambers was a good enough right back to play for a team competing for promotion to the Premier League, and yet he was our starting right back in a season where we made the play offs and were top on Boxing Day. Similarly, our midfield that season pretty regularly featured Luke Hyam who I doubt many think individually is good enough for a top 6 Championship side. Same could very easily be said for the likes of Anderson, Tabb, Smith, even Skuse (who had been relegated with Brizzle a couple of years prior). And yet there they were, all playing in a top 6 Championship side. I just think it's a simplistic and unhelpful way to try and rate a player to be honest, and as I say it's often self defeating. Wilson was in our defence when we were top 2 for much of the early season. In fact our form (and defending) have declined since he's been out of the side. He was playing pretty regularly when we were top last season as well. Our declines in both seasons haven't been down to his performances. This idea that X player either is or isn't good enough tends to buy into the Lambert school of management that you just need to keep signing better players to improve. It's about a balanced and well coached side. I'm confident with a decent manager in place we could play Wilson most weeks and go up. That's not to say he'd be first pick as I feel we have better options at the club, but I don't buy the suggestion that him playing regularly would be a barrier to us going up under a decent manager. I don't see much evidence to support that claim.

Maybe. I thought he was alright in the Championship, but ideally we'd want better. He's decent enough back up. That's not what I was disagreeing with though. I was disagreeing with your comment that he kicks it into touch every time the ball comes near him, which is patently nonsense. In fact according to the stats someone published earlier in the season, Wilson was consistently the most accurate of the defenders when it came to passing, and one of the best in the whole team.
