NHS 1% pay rise 22:31 - Mar 4 with 9026 viewsStokieBlue

WTF are the Tories thinking?

A tiny pay rise for a public sector organisation that have worked incredibly hard the last year in frankly awful conditions. Probably the worst conditions in hospital with regards to stress and mental health in more than a generation.

Even if that is changed and revised upwards the fact it was originally considered "acceptable" is ridiculous. I am sure most people would have accepted a small income tax increase in order to make the appropriate public sector pay rises.

At least they all clapped though.

This strand of the thread did start with a comment about the Red Top Brigade, so links to The Sun, The Daily Mail and The Daily Star would be more appropriate.

Perhaps we should all be paying another 2% in income tax to better fund the NHS and education.
I would be quite happy to pay it - perhaps Labour should propose it.

The teachers I know are on quite a whack, one being deputy head at an Ipswich High School and the other a primary school teacher - so quite a range of positions.

Not sure what you call quite a whack but primary school teachers on average earn 26 k average uk salary in 31k...

I'm not even going to bother looking for what the Star says.

Perhaps if you broadened your horizons past the Qatari owned news outlets such as Al Jazeera then you'd be able to check the headlines yourself.

I hope you get on well with it since it is so overpaid for such an easy task you must be keen to fill one of the many vacancies. I think you should get a bursary during your training year too.

I haven't read through the thread so apologies if I'm repeating anyone. I cannot help that this is a poorly played hand and I feel they've done it this low as they are worried about the total cost of the NHS as a pay rise is for all and for the long term.

If I were the government and I was worried about the mid-term cost id be looking at a 1 off bonus. Similar to how a lot of firms work when they have a bumper year. This for all accounts was a bumper year for the NHS. They have been asked to work hard, longer, and in a more dangerous scenario.

Odd response.

I didn't spot the humour in your criticism of teacher pay. It appeared more like envy.

First thing I would do is to spell flare correctly.

Not exactly made the front pages, did it. Or even a feature on BBC's 'The Papers'. But thanks for the 'heavy lifting', if I ever need a small bag of feathers moved I know who to call...

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000sx3p/the-papers-02032021

For what it is worth, since I got back from Panama (where I was just about wedded to BBC Sounds for news content due to the paucity of local media) I have rarely checked on Al Jazeera, I think I have looked at The Scotsman's web page more. But 'The Papers' is something I hardly ever take in too, and judging fro this episode from the evening of the Commons vote I am more convinced than ever that what makes the front pages of the red tops is rarely what really matters. Apologies if I am misrepresenting footers here but I think that is what he was getting at, and it is something so obvious I am already annoyed about even spending this much time on it.

But every so often, when time allows, I do enjoy reading a quality newspaper or The Economist from cover to cover, There is a lot of quality journalism around, such a shame that vested interests and fuzzy demand get in the way of so much of it getting a wider readership.
