I like Dozzell, and think he could be a really good player 16:58 - Mar 27 with 3252 viewsDubtractor

But he has been amazingly bad this afternoon. Passing has been toss, weak in the challenge, caught in possession etc etc.

Q. When does AD make a killing pass?

Key Passes/90 (Ipswich Town midfielders, 10+ appearances)
Dozzell 1.4
Judge 1.0
Edwards 0.7
Lankester 0.6
Nolan 0.5
Bishop 0.5
Parrott 0.4
Bennetts 0.4
Downes 0.4
Sears 0.2

A. Twice as often as almost every midfielder at the club.

Well quite.

For the avoidance of any doubt (I think it was clear from the OP but....) I rate Dozzell, and my comment was purely based on his performance yesterday.

He has had some off games for sure, but for me has been one of our better players this season. Not a great achievement, granted.

To me, yes.

I think he is getting through a lot of work defensively, but just seldom anywhere to go with the ball

Think his season has been one of the few positives, and if we could get a functioning 3 behind the front man he'd be better.

I do agree that he does, you rarely see him busting a gut to get back or actually sprinting for any ball, it's quite something really.

I'm not sure how good AD is overall, he is actually a hard player to judge

people slating Dozzell yesterday is wrong, yes he was error strewn, but at least he was showing fir the ball, getting on the ball and trying

Bishop was quiet

Judge, Edwards and Sears should just be ashamed of each other... offered nothing, pathetic

Other senior players like ward and Chambo didn’t step up and drive the team on

There is a disease at the club since Marcus had been here of non progressive play and hiding during the must win games

Cook is trying to bring change, the squad resists and is incapable again

At least Dozzell looked upset at the end

Agree

I just don’t understand this fixed belief that he ‘is going to be a good player’. It’s almost like people think if they repeat it enough times it will become true. He’s not that young anymore. He’s been pretty ineffective most of the season to be brutally honest. What are his key attributes? He can’t tackle, no real pace, can’t head, doesn’t score many goals, assist count this season is abysmal. People talk about his passing ... backwards or sideways he’s great ...

id suggest his passing isn't always toss, and it certainly wasn't in early years, as he had an international career because of it

Playing for the youth levels does not count as a ‘career’

Agreed and agreed. I thought he was really poor Saturday. The issue, as with many of our side at the moment is who would he be replaced with? It was a very scrappy performance devoid of any real quality. In normal circumstances it would've been a half decent away point and clean sheet against a side who had a few really tidy players, I make Wigan half decent, but the performance just looked so uninspiring and lacking in belief. On a day where other results went against us too it certainly adds to the disgruntlement. I thought first half in particular we looked solid enough defensively without creating anything, that's definitely our best back 5 IMO. Real shame KVY will be out again.

In the middle I don't like Bishop and Dozzell as a 2 at all, they're too lightweight and fail to impose themselves on a consistent basis. For me it's one of the other, we really miss Downes in there or even a fit Skuse. I think Norwood up front can score goals if he gets the service, just about anything good we do goes through him and his goal scoring record is actually decent relative to minutes on the pitch.

The big question mark is the 3 that are behind him and bringing the creativity (lol). The benefit of breaking up Dozzell and Bishop is it would allow one of them to be pushed into that #10 role. As for the wingers, I don't know where we go with that. Sadly I still make Sears and Edwards about the best we've got, but Sears has lost any pace he once had and Edwards was so so poor on Saturday. Perhaps Jackson is worth a go, albeit not his favoured position? Dobra is a nice option off the bench to make something happen, maybe he should start against the Gas? What a complete waste of time and money Thomas, Harrop, Bennetts etc appear to have been.

I've said it before and stick by it, it won't be pretty but I would be inclined to go 4-4-2 with a narrower midfield. Dozzell creating from the left with a bit more licence to roam, Bishop right. 2 of Judge, Downes, Skuse, Parrot et al centrally grafting. 2 from Norwood, Jackson, Hawkins up top. I get that Paul Cook has a favoured system but I don't see that we have the personnel for it. It's a 10 game season, or rather a 5 - 6 game season probably until we know a little clearer where we stand. It's about results.

He might just need a bit of time. He's no worse than Matt Grimes was down here at that age, with exactly the same accusations being thrown at him. Now Grimes is ever-present in a team challenging for automatic promotion to the PL.

This is Dozza's breakthrough season as well don't forget. Some players need a little longer to mature.
