Pretty big statement of intent from Biden 23:34 - Mar 31 with 1531 viewsStokieBlue

He's announced a massive 2trn USD infrastructure plan focused on upgrading existing infrastructure (especially in deprived areas) and quickening the transition to a greener country.

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/mar/31/biden-infrastructure-plan-addres

It's not enough of course but it's a massive statement of intent and more could follow over the next few years I guess. For comparison it's bigger than both the New Deal and the Marshall plan.

Investment in infrastructure is the most effective and enduring means of stimulating any national economy (as long as the projects invested in are sensible, rather than prestige or vanity projects that bring little benefit). The republicans and lobby groups are going to fight the corporate tax hike hard though, so it’ll be an interesting acid test of the new administration’s ability to put its agenda into place.

It’s a step in the right direction.

Biden has impressed me so far in terms of what I’d expect from your average Democrat, although it does feel more female, non white and leftist empowered voices are seeping in.

It has to shift, and the UK needs the same. Particularly if we actually want a seat at the table of the future.

Just been listening on the World Service. Sounds superb - what the US & UK should have been starting at least a decade ago, if not more. Still, better late than never for them. Fat chance any of our current shower of sh1te will have the intelligence, foresight or will to do the same, sadly.

Read that last week. A good lesson for all centre left parties. Don’t frighten the electorate off.

No they're going to build their own HS2 Stateside.

No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

The Republicans Party will no doubt be up in arms about 'their tax dollars' going to people who 'should work their way out of poverty'.

Investment in infrastructure is absolutely crucial. It is what this country failed to do from the end of the Victorian era on. It is a particular failure of the post war era. Sweat the assets Evans style, cut, reduce costs, place blame, take profit was the basic policy for decades. Businesses, industries have a lifespan - a birth, life and death just like everything else in this world. If you don’t invest, reinvest, change, it dies.

An classic example of this the U.K. car industry. Even in the 70s rubbish products like the Allegro and Austin Princess were being hurled together over about 5 sites at Cowley. New engines? Nah. The A and B series that dated back to 1951 and 1954 will do just fine. Leaked a bit but didn’t they all? No they didn’t. If the Japanese and Germans could build engines that didn’t leak and build cars quicker than it took to correct some of the faults on an All-aggro why couldn’t we? It wasn’t Red Robbo and co. It is because investment was minimal and methods of production archaic.

Actually the key step is: Embrace the left rather than punching, purging and generally demonising it.

Desperately, desperately needed leadership from that country. Not like the half-arsed flannel from our toxic blue-green algae.
