History fatigue 13:05 - May 19 with 3641 views | Illinoisblue | Anyone else exhausted by the relentless looking back at our history? 20!years ago... 40 years ago.... there’s a fine line between being proud of our history and wallowing in it. And I realize the irony of posting this on Those Were the Days. Put another way: it’s time for some new heroes

History fatigue on 13:08 - May 19 with 2921 views | Weekender | Im with you on that. We of course should be proud of historic achievements but if them up the road were doing this then i'm sure they would be accused of tin-pottery.

History fatigue on 13:08 - May 19 with 2916 views | hype313 | Just a by product of our recent history under the Evans stewardship, lets hope the class of 21/22 can start writing their own history, obviously in a positive manner... A hat trick by Batistuta in the curtain raiser will go a long way to get the fans drooling.

History fatigue on 13:11 - May 19 with 2863 views | Marshalls_Mullet | I guess it depends on your age. I wasn't around for the 40 year stuff, so the interviews etc don't really interest me. I tend to lap up the stuff from 20 years ago though. Although I guess most of that got covered last year when sites and pods were desperate for content. Listened to loads of it in the first lockdown.

History fatigue on 13:14 - May 19 with 2844 views | Oldsmoker | Not at all. It's the era when I attended most games. Revelling in the past is what us oldies love as 'you youngsters don't even know you were born', an odd phrase that I have no idea what it means.

History fatigue on 13:14 - May 19 with 2846 views | Steve_M | Yes, finishing fifth in 2001 is now as far removed from today as 1981 was then. The fact that we've been in decline - with a couple of brighter periods - for two decades is fairly miserable. No promotions, no finals just three lots of play-offs and a League Cup semi final. The combination of Sheepshanks & Burley fecking up the Summer of 2001, Royle just failing, Evans frittering money away on Keane and then not backing MM, then the post-MM era is five or six eras of failure rolled into one.

Indeed, we have crammed a lot of misery into the last 15 years or so. It’s okay to look back on the good times but, really, what is there left to say at this point?

Just happens that a couple of big anniversaries are a day apart.
History fatigue on 13:54 - May 19 with 2635 views | Darth_Koont | Absolutely! They’ll never be forgotten but the glory days can’t be our reference point. But I suppose it becomes increasingly the reference when we’ve been starved of any excitement. GB’s side in the late 90s-early 00s was about great success in the second tier and a phenomenal 5th place in the Prem. Those were certainly glory days but of course they fell way short of a league title, a cup win or a European trophy. So it goes to show that we can and will create new successes even if the expectation drops. Time to look forward.

History fatigue on 14:00 - May 19 with 2605 views | jeera | Gives some of us things to remember I suppose. Whilst providing a bit of info for the younger generations. I often see stuff I never knew about when the likes of PJH and Smoker et al get going with their talk of Town back in the day, during the war... etc.

In fairness looking back at a Milk Cup win and a volley isn't the same as looking back at League, FA cup and UEFA cup titles. That said we should not wallow in the glories of days past. Big anniversaries warrant a mention though [Post edited 19 May 2021 14:59]

They could have varied it so the anniverary of cup wins is staggered across the year.

History fatigue on 15:27 - May 19 with 2410 views | Churchman | Yes and no. It’s quite nice to share experiences of the past and hear about stuff, even the times I was too young for like the clubs greatest achievement winning the league. If people want to hear it about it, I see no problem in sharing it. However, you are dead right. It’s also time for making some new memories. Time to look forward. One of the many issues I had with Evans’ era was that there was nothing to look forward to. Just certain decline. There was no fun in that or in watching others go past us. Hopefully, with new owners, providing it’s not all hype, we will be able to move forwards again. [Post edited 19 May 2021 15:31]

History fatigue on 19:56 - May 19 with 2111 views | ITFC_Forever | Not really, I love finding out about the recollections from the likes of PJH, Lucan and the others that lived it.... not just the match, but the detail behind the match - the journeys there, the bars, the scrapes with opposition fans. The colour photos on the second page of the thread started by the Athletic journo are fantastic. Different times back then, it wasn’t just a car of hop on a budget flight or cruise up to Manchester in a modern car with air con, a digital radio and sat, then text your mate to find out which pub they’re in. Edit; I read the Adventures of a Tractor Boy a week or two ago, that’s the kind of detail I love reading about going to games back in the day. My father in law and uncle in law are another two who a fascinating to listen to on the subject. You get a sense of just how good the likes of Beattie and co really were.
