Anyone else exhausted by the relentless looking back at our history? 20!years ago... 40 years ago.... there’s a fine line between being proud of our history and wallowing in it. And I realize the irony of posting this on Those Were the Days.

I guess it depends on your age.
I wasn't around for the 40 year stuff, so the interviews etc don't really interest me.
I tend to lap up the stuff from 20 years ago though. Although I guess most of that got covered last year when sites and pods were desperate for content. Listened to loads of it in the first lockdown. |  |

Yes, finishing fifth in 2001 is now as far removed from today as 1981 was then. The fact that we've been in decline - with a couple of brighter periods - for two decades is fairly miserable. No promotions, no finals just three lots of play-offs and a League Cup semi final.
The combination of Sheepshanks & Burley fecking up the Summer of 2001, Royle just failing, Evans frittering money away on Keane and then not backing MM, then the post-MM era is five or six eras of failure rolled into one. |  |

Absolutely!
They’ll never be forgotten but the glory days can’t be our reference point. But I suppose it becomes increasingly the reference when we’ve been starved of any excitement.
GB’s side in the late 90s-early 00s was about great success in the second tier and a phenomenal 5th place in the Prem. Those were certainly glory days but of course they fell way short of a league title, a cup win or a European trophy. So it goes to show that we can and will create new successes even if the expectation drops.

In fairness looking back at a Milk Cup win and a volley isn't the same as looking back at League, FA cup and UEFA cup titles.
That said we should not wallow in the glories of days past.

Yes and no. It’s quite nice to share experiences of the past and hear about stuff, even the times I was too young for like the clubs greatest achievement winning the league. If people want to hear it about it, I see no problem in sharing it.
However, you are dead right. It’s also time for making some new memories. Time to look forward. One of the many issues I had with Evans’ era was that there was nothing to look forward to. Just certain decline. There was no fun in that or in watching others go past us.

Not really, I love finding out about the recollections from the likes of PJH, Lucan and the others that lived it.... not just the match, but the detail behind the match - the journeys there, the bars, the scrapes with opposition fans.
The colour photos on the second page of the thread started by the Athletic journo are fantastic.
Different times back then, it wasn’t just a car of hop on a budget flight or cruise up to Manchester in a modern car with air con, a digital radio and sat, then text your mate to find out which pub they’re in.
Edit; I read the Adventures of a Tractor Boy a week or two ago, that’s the kind of detail I love reading about going to games back in the day.
My father in law and uncle in law are another two who a fascinating to listen to on the subject. You get a sense of just how good the likes of Beattie and co really were. [Post edited 19 May 2021 20:02]
