Tom Hunt at it again 09:07 - May 25 with 2224 viewstractordownsouth

This time he’s on Crank Radio slagging off human rights lawyers. Even after Priti Patel’s words inspired a knife attack at a law firm last year. Of course we need to prevent human trafficking, but dangerous rhetoric isn’t the way to do it.

As a side note. It’s funny to see the left blamed for all the problems in this country yet again, despite not having been in power for 11 years now.

Won't win him many brownie points from the Attorney General... Although in practice she never worked as a human rights lawyer, she just said she did!

The Tories, a case study in shallow performative boll0cks.

Braverman and Hunt both have experience of racist dog whistling so I’m sure this will get him some brownie points.

Last sentence is spot on - it’s all about talking the talk not walking the walk. For all their tough on immigration talk, non-EU migration (which we always had complete control over) has massively increased since 2010. Additionally, if he actually thinks that Brexit makes it harder to send back refugees then he’s an idiot or he thinks the public are idiots. Neither one is a good look.

Even in this current crop of Tories he’s a dangerous lunatic.

"Left wing lawyers". Just because people criticise a particular viewpoint/stance, it doesn't make them the polar opposite. Every issue doesn't have to have solely two opposite stances.

I wonder whether he's doing this on purpose to play to the audience or if he's just a bit dumb. It's classic Trumpian/Jonsian tactics, so I suspect it's the former and he knows what he's doing.

What and embarrassment and danger to Ipswich, a place he hardly ever deigns to mention by the way — surely the majority of people in the town are appalled and want him out.

There's no reason why it can't be both, after all, we've established ad nauseam(don't worry Decent Right Wingers, it's Latin, not foreign) that there are people on here who have happily voted against their best interests(theoretical example: the poster who has a partner from overseas but still votes for a virulently xenophobic Conservative party) because they basically want to Own The Libs

True. He's a menace. Although in a strange way you almost have to admire how he (and others in the party like him) have managed to convince so many people to vote for him/them considering how vile their views are. Almost.

I’ll concede they had some direct influence for a change but there was nothing left-wing about New Labour in practice.

Edit: And just to say, I agree wholeheartedly with the overall point. The left-bashing has become like McCarthyism and hugely dangerous.

Haha! Yeah, I expect you knew that was coming.

I also think it’s important to point at a centre. Calling New Labour the left would mean there is no centre at all. And they’d even be right-wing moderates in more enlightened democracies.

By left, I meant either left or centre-left - I'd characterise New Labour as the latter but no use going over that now. I'm sure it will re-appear in another thread.

And yet it seems to be a commonly held view.

It is hard to respond polite and reasonable to those sort of statements after all this time.

This is why some people get dismissed out of hand. Where the hell do you go with that?

Centre-right no question. You can’t embrace neoliberalism and imperialism and be on the left side of the divide as they’re antithetical to equality and redressing economic imbalances which are fundamental to a socialist or even social democratic perspective.

Alongside embracing social liberalism means New Labour was net classic liberalism. It’s only the UK’s overall skew to the right that makes it seem “left” but that’s nonsense.

Afraid not. A tough stance on immigration is quite likely to win him more votes in Ipswich. It was likely the key reason he was voted in here. There are undoubted issues in Ipswich and what he’s suggesting here won’t fix any of them, but that won’t matter to his supporters. It’s another tick in the box for them towards getting Johnny Foreigner out.
