Difficult one for both sides of the political spectrum this..... on 09:55 - May 26 with 3835 views | Bloots | ....last year he was the biggest liar in the country according to some, but if he says anything anti the government he'll be telling the truth this time. According to others he was totally truthful last year, but if he says anything anti the government this time he'll be the biggest liar in the country. I expect both sides will cherry pick some comments to believe and others to dismiss. Eventually people will realise that all politicians are liars. ...actually, no they won't.

The tactic seems to be one of apologising profusely about all the incompetence.......................that he is about to lay bare rather putting fat boy in an extremely awkward position as ultimately the final decision was his

The "I was just following orders" excuse isn't acceptable either. Boris is clearly to blame but some of that blame is also on Cummings and he shouldn't get away with trying to absolve himself of his involvement. SB

eh ? I think it is quite easy to differentiate what is and isn't a lie in this case on the simple basis we knew Cummings visited his parents, and then Barnard Castle, and his explanation was deeply flawed, and offered nothing that was in the least bit plausible in defence whereas what has been shown this morning is easily corroberated, by actions and comments at the time

"Eventually people will realise that all politicians are liars." Yet we keep on cheering and asking them to control our lives. Madness, isn't it?

Not sure hw you understand PMQs or what was being done here The point was to calmly expose Johnsons lies and incompetence Maybe you watched Ian Blackford afterwards - same calm tone Both knowing they had Johnson on the ropes.... as did he, hence the ranting and raving mode from Johnson

History shows there's normally a watershed moment when things start to unravel. It won't be a scandal - as you say the are riding those out as things stand. A key trigger used to be when sections of formerly supportive media start to turn, but I'm not sure if that would be significant today now that people are on social media more. God knows what will get the scales to drop from people's eyes this time. Maybe it'll be an internal attack on Johnson from someone like Gove and then they lose their focus point in Johnson. Who knows.

But they won’t or can’t deliver the knockout blow. We have the Spurs equivalent of an opposition nowadays.

I'm not sure many want to believe him. It's just good theatre between two well known liars. As Harry says, if stuff can be validated against known, proven events then fair enough, but I wouldn't trust Cummings as far as I could throw him.

If Cummings is lying, you've got to ask to what end when he says stuff like this: "I blame myself for many many things in this crisis, but one thing can say completely honestly is: I said repeatedly from Feb/March, if we don't fire [Hancock], we are going to kill people and it's going to be a catastrophe." and "I wasn't the only one telling the PM that. The Cabinet sec said directly to the PM: 'PM the British system is not set up to deal with a secretary of state who repeatedly lies in meetings'." He's clearly got it in for Hancock for whatever reason but he's enthusiastically throwing the PM under the bus as well while sticking up for a civil servant (most of whom he can't abide).

The only thing that will take Johnson down will be one of the various self-serving, duplicitous individuals he's surrounded himself with taking him down. Cummings won't suffice, too discredited and no real power anymore, but if Gove or Sunak decided to make a move that might get him out. We'd then at least get to see whether there's some sort of cult of Boris/cult of Brexit that explains much of the population losing its good sense and moral compass, or whether people genuinely like what the nasty party stands for these days.

I'm not an idiot. Let's wait and see how much impact Starmer's approach has. I'm guessing virtually none.
