I honestly didn't know there were sides to racism.

Most people I know manage to not be racist.

There isn't, but there is a whole lot of grey area in peoples definition of racism.

This is all very Donald Trump, mate. What are these two sides of the fence? The racists on one side and those who are opposed to racism on the other? Do you think both sides are equal in this?

What i struggle with are those that vilify people beacuse they laugh at Alf Garnet sketches.

We all know racism is a problem, although not a particularly prevelent one in our wonderfully diverse nation.

Our incessant need to attack eachothers opinions seems to me to be a bigger problem in todays society.

I would say it's still a very prevalent one. Not having a sign on the front gate saying 'no blacks, no dogs, no Irish' and not being spat at walking down the street is progress, perhaps, but lets not kid ourselves that racism isn't prevalent in society, be it conscious bias or otherwise.

FWIW I've never heard of Curly Barney so can't comment on his contribution to this site, but I can't personally think of any examples of people that have been banned from here without good reason.

I believe I see where you’re coming from but I don’t think it’s a good thing to hold that arguing about opinions or even shouting people down/cursing them for their opinions is worse than racism. And chances are you are the typical TWTD user; a middle class white man, just like me, and so you and I know far less about how much of a problem discrimination is, than the people suffering from it.

Racism isn't a prevalent problem? Are you kidding me? Marcus Rashford was getting a load of racist abuse just last week because he missed a chance in the Europa League final and happens to be Black.

If you genuinely think that people being challenged for holding racist views is a bigger problem than racism then you probably need to work on your own self, mate.

Let's just say the poster in question has form. He spent most of 2020 engaging in dog whistle racism under the guise of not liking BLM as an organisation.

I wish someone had reported that if that was the case. I wasn't aware of the poster at all until a few days ago.

I think on some of the threads in question you ended up having to deal with more transparent racists to be honest, then this poster seemed to disappear for a while and was quickly forgotten about.

Trying to interpret your Alf Garnett comment..

People have been trying to interpret Alf Garnett ever since Johnny Speight created the character. It was almost a 'be careful what you wish for' in that someone who was intended to be a figure of fun (without being a completely one dimensional caricature) was held up as a good old fashioned Eastender by some. 'Till Death Us Do Part' took a gamble on shedding light on the difficulties faced by recent immigrants to London instead of sweeping them under the carpet but there were probably quite a few people from the Caribbean who would have preferred not to have had Alf Garnett on screen as a lightning rod for a type of behaviour that some thought it OK to copy.

In most cases things have moved on but I guess there are older people who still have a nostalgia for the simplified version of racism that Speight set out in, sorry about my use of irony here, black and white terms (on black and white television...) The update to that piece of culture I would recommend to people in that state of mind is 'Small Island' (the book at over five hundred pages may look a bit much for some but there is the National Theatre stage play and a television adaptation). Andrea Levy's confused and war weary racist 'Bernard' is an altogether sadder, but on the way to being wiser, character than Garnett. Plus the descriptions of London and rural England during World War Two are very creditable, enough so to warm people who knew those times, or were children of those who lived through them, towards the Windrush generation.

Funnily enough, I picked up an Alf Garnett book for a couple of quid last month. Obviously Speight was using a sledgehammer rather than a scalpel to get his point across, but it's a delicious irony that he was a socialist anti-racist. Although reading chapters entitled things like 'The Welsh w*g' does feel slightly uncomfortable for a more modern audience...

The interesting thing about Wartime was that the British were often appalled by the segregation and attitudes in the US forces based over here. There are a number of accounts of locals taking the side of black servicemen against military police who were trying to force them out of pubs and the like.

One quote from a Gloucestershire farmer: "I quite like Americans, but I'm not so sure about the white ones they've brought with them."
