Funnily enough, I picked up an Alf Garnett book for a couple of quid last month. Obviously Speight was using a sledgehammer rather than a scalpel to get his point across, but it's a delicious irony that he was a socialist anti-racist. Although reading chapters entitled things like 'The Welsh w*g' does feel slightly uncomfortable for a more modern audience...
I like the point you make here about Speight being a socialist anti-racist. Sometimes the most obvious of seemingly racists are anything but; of course sadly the opposite also applies. I do happen to believe that the UK is still a tolerant nation, that of course should not be interpreted as being a perfect one.

I was expecting an 'Ahem' post from you at the very least.
I think forum users notice it more than admins because we're on the threads more, interacting with these types more. It's not the kind of stuff you can always report in isolation because the racists have got sneaky.
Generally it's a pattern of low level dog whistling, hints and trolling. They aren't coming out with racist terms, but they are giving their mates a nudge and a wink and trying to get a rise out of the rest of us.
Just my two cents, but I think that's why a lot goes unreported, and why Phil always ends up asking why nobody told him about it when one of these types eventually and inevitably crosses the line. I've given up reporting those kind of comments now, because nothing ever happens and nothing changes.

What i struggle with are those that vilify people beacuse they laugh at Alf Garnet sketches.
We all know racism is a problem, although not a particularly prevelent one in our wonderfully diverse nation.
Our incessant need to attack eachothers opinions seems to me to be a bigger problem in todays society.

An interesting take and not one I'd suggest the majority of black people agree with. I'd highly recommend Jemaine Jenas's "Stop and search" documentary on channel 4, a real eye opener.
Lots of testimony and examples of racist attitudes in our police towards people of colour. And if racism pervades the police, as well trained and keen to eliminate racism as they are, it is fair to assume it also pervades many other aspects of of our society.
And as if by magic you turn up. Youre one of the worst for stirring up shoite that isn't there.
