Can i be honest with you? I don't really understand anti-semitism, as i've never encountered it, nor known anyone who has. I suspect that is something i have in common with 99% of the poster on this forum. |
A few years ago, one of my bosses said that Hitler had the right idea about what to do with the Jews. Also, that the numbers killed were exaggerated and why are the Jewish deaths given preference over all of the others killed in the camps?

I'm definitely not trying to defend an act of racism, as some of the younger bearded posters appear determined to suggest, but i do think a small a amount of ignorance should be tolerated. |

What i struggle with are those that vilify people beacuse they laugh at Alf Garnet sketches.
We all know racism is a problem, although not a particularly prevelent one in our wonderfully diverse nation.

They also made a disparaging insinuation about young people with beards, which as a (moderately) young person with a beard, I feel falls a lot closer to the mark of minor abuse than any queries regarding the substance of their opinions on racism. |  |

I'm just spit balling here, so forgive me if it comes across as me trying to defend bigotry (I'm really not), or attacking the good people of Suffolk (again, I'm really not) but I often think back on my upbringing in Suffolk and compare and contrast to my experiences since moving to a more diverse place.
It's easy to ignore racism, or at least convince yourself that it isn't really a big deal anymore, in a place where 90% of the population identify as White British. Unless you're in a field of work that brings you into contact with minorities, you really can go day to day mainly interacting with people who look like you, sound like you, eat the same food as you, have the same cultural beliefs as you.
That's not anyone's fault, you live where you live and you see who you see, but it really can deny people the opportunity to hear about or witness the experiences of people who negotiate the world in a vastly different way to you. We all have things in common, but there's also some major differences that you never think about unless you actively make the effort.
It's not difficult to imagine how under these circumstances, when confronted with BLM protests or football players kneeling on the TV, the initial reaction is to roll your eyes and to think it's all a load of fuss about nothing. It's remote. It's not a 'me' problem, an it's not even a 'we' problem, it's a 'them' problem.
When I moved here I quickly came to realise that I brought all kinds of biases and assumptions with me about groups of people, based on what society and culture told me rather than my own direct experiences with them. So often, in our culture, Black stories are told by white voices, and that is inherently inauthentic. That was a difficult thing to admit to myself about myself, and its something I still carry with me every day. It's an ongoing process to always be aware of what you unwittingly expect other people to be like.
I now live somewhere that I have to confront it every time I step out of my front door though. I can't ignore it, when the vast majority of my friends and neighbours aren't White Anglo Saxon in heritage. I honestly can say that if I'd stayed living in rural Suffolk that probably wouldn't be the case. I'd have still been dead against racism and racists, but I don't know if I would have ever had to so closely examine my own biases. [Post edited 2 Jun 2021 19:54]

I think a lot of this is true, in Melford when I grew up there 2 black kids in the whole village. Before the takeaways opened you could fit the whole BAME population of the villlage in a phone box.
I had my eyes opened when I was younger, my mum's sister is black/mixed race and her brother my uncle used to come down and visit with his male "best friend" so I've learnt and understood things better than a lot round here who haven't had that experience. |  |
