What on earth is wrong with Southgate? 12:46 - Jun 13 with 5425 views | mylittletown | A right back at left back, when Shaw has been in storming form. Grealish not picked when Sterling has been hopelessly out of form, two holding midfielders when that system has been proven not to work time after time.

What on earth is wrong with Southgate? on 16:36 - Jun 13 by mikeybloo88 | Personally I bought Trippier was poor...it was pretty obvious on occasion that not having a left footed player squandered a few attacking opportunities as he ha to check back. I also thought he missed a few tackles and got done a few times. Walker wasn't much better. |
Walker loves an over lap, where trippier was a sitting fullback so that allowed Sterling to play higher up and with more freedom. At first I didn’t agree, then I could see what he was doing and I thought it worked in most part. Well done England It’s coming home!!

Also, I had no idea we had never won an opening game of a euros before, that is mental. [Post edited 13 Jun 2021 20:56]

Our record in the European Championships in general is fairly poor - the happy memories of Euro 96 tend to obscure the fact that most of them have been car crashes for England. In my lifetime: Disasters: 1980, 1988, 1992, 2000, 2016 Did OK: 2004, 2012 Did well: 1996 Didn’t qualify: 1984, 2008 It’s a very poor record, but if anyone can change it Southgate can.

Totally agree. I remember in the old days how Germany grew into a tournament

What on earth is wrong with Southgate? on 20:10 - Jun 13 by pointofblue | I'd say switch Trippier to right back and bring in Chilwell for Scotland but otherwise keep the same XI which started today. Would prefer to see Sancho on the bench instead of Johnstone though. Walker can miss out alongside the injured Maguire. |
I’d go with that. One of the things I like about Mings at the back is that he never look panicky. I hope they keep him in the side. Nice to see he can still hit a good long ball. One in the first half reminded me of the cross pitch pass he did at Charlton to McGoldrick to lay on the winning goal at Charlton in 2014 | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Another really lovely article on Mings, you could say that long cross-field pass is a trade-mark for him, noticed very early on in his career* - https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/50186828 * (towards bottom of the pagee) - "How did they let him go?" Mings would have been forgiven for losing some of that belief when he was released by Southampton a decade ago. His first stop was Millfield - one of the leading independent schools in the UK - where he took A Levels in physical education and psychology and a BTEC Sport. And it was here his growth spurt began, going from 5ft 8in when he joined to 6ft 2in - and still growing - when he left a couple of years later. "He looked a waif and stray when he started," says football coach Terry Akhurst. "He was very thin and very small. "But in the first training session he collected the ball at left-back and whacked a ball 40 yards to the other side of the pitch and I thought, 'you'll do for us'. "We always have a game against Southampton and they usually roll us over. But we beat them 3-1 and who do you think was the best player on the pitch? Tyrone had the motivation, but he was outstanding. "I think the academy director at the club must have thought 'how did we let him go?' He was unbelievable." "

What on earth is wrong with Southgate? on 19:57 - Jun 13 by vapour_trail | Trippier at lb was his worst selection today i thought. We have three much better options. However great start. Look at the people digging him out. It’s fckwit central. |
except that Walker was worse.

What I don't get about Stirling is that he goes from Non-League to Euro match winner within 90 mins.
