Can the gammon help me out and tell me what Boris has done 12:00 - Jun 21 with 5208 viewsBluefish

Well and why they defend him so much?

Brexit shambles - horrendous deal, full of lies, Ireland mess
Covid shambles - deaths, cases, delayed lockdown
Corruption shambles - endless cases of mates and contacts given contracts

What has he got right to be such a poster boy?

That doesn't make a lot of sense. I'm not sure how social media noise gives an insight into the characters of the various party leaders. Besides, the only alternative leader who is vaguely shouty is Blackford. Starmer, Lucas, Davey, Saville Roberts all come across as pretty cool, calm and professional. Plus Johnson's the one that has lost his rag at the dispatch box.

just trying to help. people on this thread clearly have no explanation at all for why boris still has broad support. just seems to me that a thread banging on about gammons might actually give you some insight into the issue. no? i'm not saying that one thread on twtd is the key to boris's longevity, but you must see that it is fairly typical of where a lot of informal political discussion is at present. as discussion on the left becomes ever more divisive, for many people it actually makes boris appear more reasonable.

And so as the loose-bowelled pigeon of time swoops low over the unsuspecting tourist of destiny, and the flatulent skunk of fate wanders into the air-conditioning system of eternity, I notice it's the end of the show

Not that it matters at all what Chicoazul or BlueBadger on TWTD think about anything but if nothing else the last few years have proven beyond doubt what happens when you call large swathes of the population “stupid”.

I think most people are stupid, but that's not because of who they vote for, or their response to Covid, it's because they SIGNAL RIGHT WHEN GOING STRAIGHT ON AT ROUNDABOUTS!!!!!!

Ah yes, the 'pointing out corruption, incompetence and open bigotry is BAD is bullying' gambit.

I'm one of the people who was blamed for getting Paul Cook sacked. PM for the full post.

I'll correct that......

If you are a homophobe OR voting Conservative you are an idiot basically

And yet in almost 50 years the only Labour government we have enjoyed has been branded "Tory light" by the left and Blair as some sort of traitor to the cause.

Yet we don't have a country full of brown shirt wearing loons and some of the best legislation aiming to create equality.

Causal name slinging happens on all sides both between and within parties, but I doubt it has much, if any, effect on people's voting choices. Let's also not forget that Johnson has built his career on stoking the divide, so I don't see how anyone could think he's the antidote as well.

the simplest explanation for both american trump and british conservative voters is that they like the kind of things trump and johnson say and do. if you got out of your comfy bubble a bit more and mixed with these types then maybe you'd realise not everything is the left's fault. divisive and discriminatory policies are popular.

much easier to blame the left from the comfort of your arm chair though. again.

eh ?

rather arz about face there

it is because Johnson is not seen as 'reasonable' that he gets the support he does

he finds no problem in pandering to any form of bigotry, racism and homophobia - with unpleasant xenophobia thrown in

play on voters fears that 'they' are going to take over, and you will easily appear as being on their side - history is littered with similar shtbags, and similar numpties all too willing to believe them

At least two contemporary cabinet members voted against it at the time. Several current and recent ministers also did.

Still not the Party line though is it, they don't tell their voters this but they are pro-gay rights, pro-trans rights, pro-immigration, pro-open boarders, pro-hate crime laws, pro-speech curbs, pro-BLM (be it the soft version), pro diversity (just look at the cabinet), Boris himself is actually Turkish, and are financially backed by tons of Muslims as well. They are hardly the party their voters think they are backing, thus if your anti-gay, anti-immigration and the like and you vote Conservative, you are an idiot because thats not what they stand for, whether we like them or not.

You're mistaken if you think they support those things for the benefit of the people impacted by them though. They support the things that will ultimately help the Conservative Party and only those things. And even then they won't be honest about it.

Get the idea that they have any kind of moral or ethical reasoning behind treating people decently out of your head. On the rare occasion it does happen, it's a byproduct of helping themselves.

The word 'pro' is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. They've closed borders, politicised and demeaned immigrants even if they've been living here for decades (e.g. EU citizens, Windrush), dehumanised asylum seekers through archaic procedures that have been criticised by international human rights organisations, and publicly criticised BLM and taking the knee in general.

Plus Johnson isn't Turkish in any meaningful sense of the word either; neither legally nor formatively (the link is one distant ancestor he's never met). Sure, they have people of various races in the cabinet, but again their race doesn't define their views on any of these matters. Bigots can come in any colour, gender, age, etc. Better to judge people on what they do.

What was that thing?

What job is done? Brexit knock ons still roll on while we scrap around for trade deals to mask them. Brexit is down when Ireland is resolved and trade flows without checks or tariffs
