We need to start looking at ourselves after this tournament, as a country, as a national team fan base

Southgate and the players were a beacon of good values and standing up for a good movement against racism

Then throughout we’ve had the ugliness of booing of the knee of government monsters and MPs backing those who booed

We still have this tabloid and right wing media that link our national sport to jingoism and xenophobia

We are a laughing stock under this government and these scenes tonight just are a national embarrassment - alongside booing other national anthems

We are better than this

And to add to that, having been following England on and off since the early 2000s, this tournament has without doubt seen a massive increase in BAME representation. I went to every England game except the first and Rome, each time I was sat next to a non-white person.

I can’t be bothered to read back this thread so I’m not sure what the overall point trying to be made is, but looking at the pictures on my phone from last night there’s plenty of representation.

It’s brilliant. Good amount of female representation too, including plenty with Indian heritage who in my experience are often massive fans of sport.

I specifically noticed, and appreciated, a much more noticeable presence of minorities present at all games on the TV. I assumed it was a response to the players taking the knee.

I appreciate Harry's take on much, but I think he's picked the wrong hill here.

I'm a bit confused with this from Harry too.

I mean, Harry's a funny one, he's generally speaking morally on the right side of things, (by 'right' Harry, I mean correct, so don't freak out), yet seems to be picking the wrong targets lately.

Texters has strongly spoken out against the trash in London yesterday and is clearly upset by some of the treatment of people he witnessed.

Meanwhile, there's some others bizarrely going out of their way to deny much of it even happened and are too busy attacking their own to listen.

There's a few legitimate targets on this one Harry, but Texters and several others on this thread are not them.

£1500 I paid for a ticket. I was excited for what I thought would be one the best days out I’ve ever experienced.
Turned out to be one of the worst - and not because we lost. In fact Italy were by far the better team so couldn’t begrudge them the win.

Bit much to label a historically well informed poster such as textbackup a liar though.

Unjustly calling people liars is one of the worst forms of abuse on social media - there are real people, known by others irl, behind the handles & unjust accusations can stack up in some people's subconscious till the myth becomes somehow "true" - "no smoke without fire" etc.

That is certainly not my recollection. I too was at Germany England and did not see a hint of trouble until the train got back into Brussels and the England fans had to walk through the Turkish quarter to get to the main square. It was then that the trouble erupted and was due to be attacked indiscriminately by Turkey supporters. [Post edited 12 Jul 2021 9:54]

I watched as England fans trashed a street full of cafes and bars.

Then in the stand, a group of them attacked some Germans, really viciously, for standing up when the German national anthem was played, then there was another ruck as we left the ground, in which a larger group of Germans, many of them in family groups, were attacked, presumably for being German..
