Anyone know why we only offered Carroll a 1 year contract? He's 29, but know he's had a fair few injuries... on a free, I'd have thought we could have offered more than a 1 year contract.

Could have sworn Phil reported it as 2 years earlier
In the spirit of reconciliation and happiness at the end of the Banter Era (RIP) and as a result of promotion I have cleared out my ignore list. Look forwards to reading your posts!
Injuries, I expect. We've also handed out a lot of longer contracts. As it stands, we'll have 14 senior professionals contracted until beyond Summer 2023, so might be limiting our long term financial exposure.

Not according to the website, which is a strange one as all the others have been. Maybe he didn’t want the option.
Turned down the offer of a contract at QPR. Maybe he just wants to keep his options open? I suspect if he, and we, do well, that there will be further negotiations further down the line.

That would be my guess too. Short contract works for both parties.

I started humping volcanoes baby, when I was too young.

I liked him at QPR, very steady player, one of those that divides the fan base as he’s deemed a bit light weight by some, his passing when he’s on top of his game is up there with the best. Reckon he’ll do well in your side as long as you’re patient with him.

You have us all wrong, nothing divides our fan base, we're like the borg.
No idea when I began here, was a very long time ago. Previously known as Spirit_of_81. Love cheese, hate the colour of it, this is why it requires some blue in it.

“….. as long as you’re patient with him.”
Yep. If this first week of the season has shown anything, it’s how patient Town fans are.

It's not just Carroll...we have 11 players at the club aged 27 or over at the moment - only 3 (Hladky, Evans, Pigott) have contracts until 2024, the other 8 (including Carroll) have contracts running out at the end of this season.
As much as we'd like to lay the blame for the club's stagnation over the past few years on the managers appointed (or owner), senior players getting their feet under the table (and draining the wage bill) hasn't exactly helped so it looks like we're trying to avoid falling into that trap again.
Club's being run properly now...if we have success this season, some of those 8 players might be rewarded with new contracts, but just as likely not; we'll be able to attract (and need) better players in the Championship, so wouldn't be surprised by another big turnover of players next summer with our new ruthless transfer policy.
As good a player as he is when he's fit, he's only averaged 10 games a season for the past four years so it would be silly to offer him anything more than a year.
If it works out the way we'd hope then I'm sure he'd be happy to stay if offered a new deal next year (hopefully in the Championship).
