This is starting to be a bit reminiscent of the Major government. Only worse, obviously.

There's a Nye Bevan quote that comes to mind but I won't post it because obviously the snowflakes won't like it up 'em.

As I've pointed out before, MPs' pay used to be tied to Grade 7 salaries in the Civil Service.

That grade is now on around £50k.

"So far as I am concerned they [tories] are lower than vermin. They condemned millions of people to semi-starvation. I warn you young men and women, do not listen to what they are saying, do not listen to the seductions of Lord Woolton. They have not changed, or if they have they are slightly worse."

Is that the one?

I don't fully disagree with the point he is making - but there is just no way they can talk about this without sounding so out of touch - it's quite delightful to listen to.

At least with the scandals in the Major years the PM set up an enquiry to look into it and sort it out. The current encumbent is enabling it all.

If public service is your aim, there shouldn't need to be a huge salary attached to it.

Although I think £82k with subsidised rent, food and drink is a pretty attractive offer regardless.

And the 'issue' only really seems to be on one side of the House... Hmmm.

It especially helps when you can get nice salary boosts and share options working for an health based AI firm, leave your role there when you become health secretary and then recommend using AI in the health service.

I’m extremely sure the public making sure MPs are focussing on important things like second jobs and “corruption” and whether people can be anon on social media will help the millions of children who live in poverty in this country, yes.

Although there are capable people in parliament, just not on the front benches of the government. You could equally make the case that having a system that allows you to be an MP and a well paid consultant in private industry encourages the kind of self serving cronyism we've been served up in recent years. Would some of these chancers want to be involved if that wasn't an option? Probably not, and that can only be a good thing. I'd rather we have MPs who know and accept that it will be their sole focus and who are there to serve the interests of their constituents and the wider public.

This is spot on.

Let's not forget, there is plenty of time for consultancy roles, media roles and public speaking when they retire from politics. The "retirement" earnings are far more lucrative than most areas of employment.

Absolutely. I'd also like to see us completely reform how political parties and election campaigns are funded. Accepting large donations from private individuals and private interests is hugely problematic, as seen in the current cash for peerage allegations. I don't for one second believe that politicians won't be biased towards individuals and organisations that have financially supported them and there are plenty of examples of this being the case.
