Are we expecting hospitality to be locked down soon? 12:24 - Dec 20 with 4830 viewsitfcjoe

This lockdown by stealth is just killing them as it is.

Spoken to a few publicans this morning, and they are tearing their hair out - they all expect it to be shut down with an announcement today - but if it isn't they are being killed by directives telling people not to go, but not getting any support.

I was at a Xmas do at Milsoms on Friday, there was due to be 200 there but ended up as 80 - I'm not sure what refund policy was but the industry is absolutely on it's knees at the moment.

I saw a tweet from a pub yesterday worried about whether they should make any orders for next week or not. With this uncertainty being repeated up and down the land you can only sympathise with them.

I think they are desperate to not have to bring in another furlough scheme, otherwise they would have done it.

I decidd not to go to my work's christmas do. being rammed in a restaurant with loads of different people didn't appeal to me.

They'll probably wait until after Christmas, to make it look a bit better. Question is really what support they'll bring in. Will they use outdoor dining (in December/January!) as an excuse not to?

I agree they'll probably wait, but the phrase 'to make it look a bit better' really rankles with me. (I realise you're reflecting what drives them, not your own views!)

What exactly are they making 'look a bit better'? - Certainly not their own competence or robustness when it comes to governing for the good of the country. Just an extremely short term, reactionary, popularity-focussed non-decision.

Who exactly does it 'look a bit better' to? - Most people I know are prepared to manage without pubs, clubs and restaurants for a couple of weeks if it means taking the heat off the NHS and protecting the vulnerable, even if turns out to be not the worst case.

It doesn't make anything look better to me, it just makes them look like a bunch of lightweight, cowardly incompetents, floundering around in their own turd stew at the time when the country needs strong leadership. Pathetic.

They could be proactive and say, for example, we'll put in a three day public holiday in the spring when this wave has died down, and everyone can look forward to that as a replacement Christmas.

Plenty of large gatherings are being cancelled voluntarily or fewer people are attending. A nightmare for an industry which has already been devastated.

Yeah I think so. Because mine was on 22nd, I just thought I'd rather not take the risk. If it was a few weeks ago, I probably would have gone...!

Strange times, but I want to try and see my faqmily this Christmas with minimal risk

And it's totally understanable people doing it - but when the Govt are basically saying don't go out unless you have to, but offering no support to those businesses affected then it's not right.

The pubs that rely on wet trade aren't effected as badly, but they are all losing their busiest months and the food places are being devastated

Are we expecting hospitality to be locked down soon? on 13:12 - Dec 20 by Stewart27

I fear this.

It’s incredibly unfair. Hospitality bears the brunt of these restrictions every time and ends up running businesses into the ground. Whether that being loss of increase or the ridiculous measures they have to put in place in order for them to re-open.

People choose to go to the pub, social event, a football match or any live event. Nobody makes you. If people have had their jabs and trust their effectiveness then let people carry on. If people are unsure then they can stay away.

They should be focussing on the places with the highest infection rates. Care homes and hospitals. And also supermarkets. People have to shop for food and basic goods, but the supermarkets are not well managed at all and the allowance of panic buying was absolutely absurd. Poor old Doris needs some milk, so they should be providing her with the safest possible environment to do this. If Dagenham Dave fancies a pint then it’s up to him.

Yes, basically those who get jabbed and test themselves, know how to drink and socialise sensibly and can conduct their own personal risk assessment as to how to safely visit a hospitality venue get penalised and lose the freedom to do that because of the a-holes who can't do that. Restrictions are simply to keep the majority with common sense away from the thick minority who are most likely to infect others.

I said a while back it will be announced on Christmas Eve and come into force on Boxing Day.

No inside info, just a complete lack of faith in the shambles of a government to act until it's too late.

One day, Chris Whitty will likely write a book and it will make for incredible reading.

If he doesn't title it - "Next Slide Please", I'll be really annoyed.

Not sure symptomatic people going to get jabbed for fear of a huge fine is particularly sensible.

Agree these people are tossers, not sure I see anything that can be done though...

Suggestions amongst the press is that indoor mixing will be banned from 27/28th December but outdoor hospitality will be allowed. Good luck pubs and restaurants with that during the depths of winter.

I think there is a high chance of inside hospitality being closed even from tomorrow but almost certainly from the 27th.

Guess we will find out after the meeting at 2pm.

Boris cancelled the 2pm cabinet meeting so no briefing from Whitty.

Sounds like they have left it too late because takes 48 hours to recall parliament for a vote. Sounding like restrictions from 28th.

If the scientists are right, the Omicron cases could have doubled 4 times by then with current restrictions.

BBC and press are reporting 3 options were presented for consideration.

A: Advice/guidance on indoor mixing etc. - nothing legislated.
B: Legislation on indoor mixing and hospitality curtained (Close at 8pm)
C: Full lockdown.

I suspect they'll go for option A simply because of the political fallout of going for either of the other 2 options.

BJs primary focus as ever is BJ so I don't see him following the scientists advice ahead of his political self interest.

Nothing was actually presented - Boris cancelled the meeting.

So he didn't turn up for Cobra, cancelled the cabinet meeting today.

Does it get to a point where he can be relieved from his position for not actually doing his job?

He's actually dangerous now.

He should be removed. I don't even care if another awful Tory replaces him as long as they turn up to the bloody meetings they are supposed to.

Maybe they should lay some cheese and wine out as an incentive for him to do his work.

Why the fck he doesn't cut and run I'll never know. He's clearly unfit for the job, clearly not enjoying it and he can go make his money on the speaking tour which seems to be his only motivation (money) from what I can see.

Some confusion here it seems, Guardian said it was postponed (implying to another day), BBC saying it's underway.

So hopefully he is listening to what they have to say and will make an informed judgement.....

Absolute c units. If they want to avoid the jab themselves that's one thing (a foolish, selfish thing), but to prevent others from getting the jab is crossing the line. Utter asshats.
How did GB news report it I wonder? Gleefully?

It does read as if they are intentionally dragging their feet, so any restrictions come into play after xmas.

Cos CV knows to ease off for a few days and allow everyone to enjoy seeing their family.

I hate lockdowns, have never pretended otherwise. But if we need restrictions then the sooner the better, has BJ literally learned nothing from the delays in spring and winter 2020?
