Changes to BBC license fee 13:22 - Jan 12 with 3933 viewsGavTWTD

I heard in PMQs they're proposing changes. Can anyone tell me how it would work in practice?

People talk about the "Netflix model" but how would that work on free to air channels? How would that work on radio? Ultimately, a subscription would cost more than the current license fee, so feels like a lose-lose situation.

The only way I can see it working if they reduce the license fee but then charge for digital/extra stuff.

If you liked my post, please take the time to upvote it. It's very much appreciated.

It needs reform, the current model is no longer viable. I opted out last year as I rarely watched live TV, and when I did it was rarely the BBC. No longer interested in MoTD, and the news can be sourced elsewhere, with arguably less bias. Once the little one grew out of watching CBeebies there was no need. Plus also these things are available elsewhere via catchup (not iPlayer).

It has always annoyed me that if I want to watch another channel, then I had to pay the BBC for the privilege to watch live TV. Never understood that one.

Must admit I have not missed it one bit and now spend that money on Netflix and DIsney+. The only thing I do miss is BBC Radio, and though the TV License does not directly cover that (hence its name) I can listen to it without breaking any rules, though I try and be fair and avoid it if I can.

Honestly, no not really.

I avoid watching the news like the plague and whilst once an avid MOTD watcher my interest in the PL has waned. Also whilst I’m glad they are able to show it, I’m not interested in watching FA Cup ties where the minnows of Dartford take on the giants of Watford on a Friday night.

There are rare occasions I watch something on the BBC and hence I’m not complaining about paying a license fee but if it was a subscription I would consider £13/mo very poor value for what I get out of it and would likely have cancelled it already.

I can understand why spending money on a service you don’t watch would annoy you - and indeed many others. I do agree that some sort of subscription service is the way to go with the possibility of buying a day pass (like Mow TV) in case there is something which you’d like to watch.

Yes this is my experience as well - I may take the plunge and stop my license fee next time around.

I think you can listen to bbc radio without the license - although I don’t even bother with that either.

Indeed. The cuts to the World Service in particular, including the former foreign press monitoring station (which I can't remember the name of; now outsourced and much less effective) have dealt a huge blow to the UK in terms of soft power overseas. Why a Tory government would want to diminish Britain's standing abroad even if in just a militaristic sense is counterproductive to say the least.

But hey, gotta own the libs at home first I guess.

If you don't watch or use any of the BBC's services then I can understand why people don't want to pay for it. You might also object to the BBC paying big money to some of its "stars" but I think they are the only legitimate reasons that I can think. Oh and giving "balanced" airtime of fringe political parties on political and news programmes.

No idea why I replied to you J2, apols.

I thought, I don't watch much on the BBC.

However, I do watch some sport on there when they have it, e.g. FA Cup. I watch Doctor Who albeit not live, and I watch their New Years Eve bash.

I also listen to Radio 1 and Radio 5 sometimes.

Then I use their website for news and for educational materials all the time.

And suddenly you realise that you use their services far more than you realise. When you factor in the licence fee covering even more, it is easy to realise (like all public services) it is far better value than we give it credit for and would be sorely missed when we are paying fees for all these different things instead.

My missus found that show on one of our many channels here. She loves British TV and property shows. I however am not a fan; watched a few (these are shows from years ago) and can’t believe you watch for an hour as these morons look at three houses… and then don’t choose one. Wtf is that all about?

She has exceptional taste Illy, and not just in fellas.

I like it for the random interludes between house hunting, where they’ll be in Northumberland and show the couple some bloke making gin out of coal, or some sh1t like that.

If you think that’s bad, there’s one on C4 with Phil & Kirsty where they show people who are mid extension around other houses, when needless to say they have absolutely no intention of buying a house at that moment in time, nor would they be in a position to sell their own if they wanted to.

The BBC World Service is tragically under-rated, seemingly mostly by UK people living in the UK.

Overseas, it's hugely valued - and not just for the objective, "hard" (factually correct) news, including that covering the UK itself, but also for the features & documentaries - 'From Our Own Correspondent', 'Inside Science' 'Stumped', 'Bad Cops' etc.

Personally I think the funding model is outdated. I don’t really use bbc news or listen to any of the radio stations. So would happily not fund Gary Lineker’s wages (if Makin thinks McKenna is smarmy, I’d love to hear what he makes of Lineker!).

Only the occasional (maybe a couple a year) series on iplayer which I’d happy pay per view as it would offer much better value to me, as I’m sure many younger people who tend to float to Netflix et al.

Never understood why some think that Lineker is smarmy. I think he’s very good at being the anchorman at sporting events.

Of all the things people could target, going after the license fee is just odd.

I suppose the BBC are a victim of the new age where a growing number of people have more extreme beliefs and anyone who doesn't agree one hundred percent is clearly the enemy. Therefore the BBC upset a lot of people on both ends of the spectrum.

Dominic Cummings led a think tank in the 00s that concluded the Tories best way to gain/keep power was to dismantle/abolish/corrupt the Beeb.

No surprise the same message comes from the same journos funded by the same dark money that gave us Brexit.

Then you have Laura Kusenberg who was happy to take that roll head on for direct access to Cummings.

But don’t tell this to Lowhouse, he may accuse me of accusing the BBC of client journalism. Or something.

And I bet he watches the Olympics, World Cup & Europa Cup matches when they're on BBC.

Personally, I can't imagine my TV watching without Attenborough docus, Line of Duty, other dramas (series & one-offs - Small Axe, The Serpent, The Trial of Christine Keeler etc etc etc) HIGNFY, Dragons Den, Arena etc.

Nice assumption but incorrect.

Just because you watch it doesn’t mean everyone else does. As I said, be happy to pay on a pay per view basis.
